The Reds have only played 10 games with their projected opening day lineup. Well that's not hard to believe considering McDonald was on the opening day lineup

No way the Reds will be able to trade Harang with that fastball velocity sitting at 87 mph.

Doc. Scott
07-24-2009, 02:30 PM
Bottom of 1. Fukudome up. Harang falls behind 3-0, makes it to full, then gives up a line-drive single to left.

BTW, Gameday shows Gomes instead of Nix in the lineup...is that correct?

Doc. Scott
07-24-2009, 02:31 PM
Theriot, noted slugger (career-high 7 HR in 2009), hits one to the wall in left-center. Taveras has it, one down. Described by Thom as a floater that just carried.

This could be a bad for a fly-ball pitcher like Harang.

Doc. Scott
07-24-2009, 02:33 PM
D. Lee to the dish. Takes a fastball strike (described by Gameday as an 86-mph changeup). Breaking ball away. Low, 2-1. Jam shot is popped up into short right- Phillips dives out of the way as Dickerson comes swooping in for the catch.

Two down.

Doc. Scott
07-24-2009, 02:35 PM
A-Ram steps in. 1-1 count. Fastball up-and in, 2-1. High fly to right-center falls in the gap. Relay throw does not get Fukudome and the Cubs lead 1-0. Hanigan had the plate blocked and the throw was good, but Kosuke slid right around the catcher.

Doc. Scott
07-24-2009, 02:37 PM
Gamesmaster up. Falls behind 0-2 after waving at an 88-mph fastball. Another "heater" stays away. Fouled back. Swing and a miss!

1-0 Cubs after 1.

Doc. Scott
07-24-2009, 02:39 PM
I have seen Harang start off slow and get faster as the game goes on, so don't assume he's toast just yet.

EdE doubles. Gomes GO on the first pitch.

Doc. Scott
07-24-2009, 02:40 PM
Top of 2. Edwin against Randy Wells. First pitch is ripped over Soriano's head in left and Encarnacion has a double. Soriano almost let EdE have a triple when he momentarily couldn't find the ball in the ivy. Apparently there was a warmup ball still in the ivy or something.

Doc. Scott
07-24-2009, 02:41 PM
Gomes goes hackin' and grounds to short. One down.

The Cubs signed Kevin Sullivan?

Homer Bailey

Edwin doesn't score on a base hit to left. Bad mental mistake but no surprise.

Doc. Scott
07-24-2009, 02:43 PM
Let's see if Hanigan can do this a little better than Gomes. Takes a fastball high. Fouled away, 1-1. Broken-bat flare drops into short left for a base hit, but Edwin was not watching Mark Berry and has to hold at third. More announcer hyperventilation over this.

Degenerate39
07-24-2009, 02:43 PM
EE needs to be clean up hitter right now

Doc. Scott
07-24-2009, 02:45 PM
Alex Gonzalez up with a man on third and less than two outs. First pitch is way inside- did it hit him? Hard grounder juuuust foul up the third-base line. Waves at a breaking ball, 1-2. He's got to get this runner home with the pitcher due up. Grounded back to the mound, Encarnacion in a rundown. He's tagged out. Now runners on first and second, two out.

Homer Bailey
07-24-2009, 02:46 PM
EE screws up on the bases again. Gets himself out at the plate on an infield grounder.

Reds baseball is so much more enjoyable when you bet against them. This is flat out hysterical.

Thom Brennamen describes the way I feel perfectly almost every time.

Top of 3. Votto leads off. Falls behind 0-2 on a taken strike and a foul. Takes one that just misses, then another one low. 2-2. Fastball up and away, full count. Fastball down the middle is fouled off. Another foul. Swings through a breaking ball on the outside corner, see ya.

One down.

Doc. Scott

B-Phil steps up. He's got some atonement to do for that clutch Phillips he hit into in the first. Hacks at the first pitch and fouls it off. Fastball's inside. Lays off the slider low and another heater inside, 3-1. Brandon punches a sinking liner to center that drops for a base hit.

RichRed

I was just thinking, it is sooo Cublike to give up an anemic-hitting pitcher's first career homer. Bless 'em.

Doc. Scott
07-24-2009, 03:07 PM
Encarnacion steps in. Hit a laser beam the last time up. Pickoff throw to first, then a slider is fouled off. Grounder foul, 0-2. Another pickoff throw over. Breaking ball juuuust tipped foul. Fastball on the inside corner locks him up, strike three.

Two outs.

Doc. Scott
07-24-2009, 03:11 PM
Gomes up. Can he be a little smarter this time? First pitch taken up and away. Phillips steals bag #15 on ball two- Fontenot had a chance to get him, but Brandon had a nice fadeaway slide to get to the bag. Check swing called a strike. Fastball off the plate is called strike two. Jonny's not happy. Ball three's in the dirt. Swung on and missed, strike three. All three outs this inning on the Ks.

3-2 Reds, mid 3rd.

Doc. Scott
07-24-2009, 03:13 PM

Doc. Scott
07-24-2009, 03:17 PM

Announcers yelling again about how Harang was dumb for pitching to Ramirez. Interestingly, one of his fastballs to Bradley jumps from 89 to 94 (according to Brantley). Gameday is showing 91-92.

Aaron throws that fastball by the Gamesmaster for strike three.

Foul runs it full. Fastball apparently ran 94 on the gun, but Gameday says 89. Hit to left-center and Gomes makes the play. 1-2-3.

Good job by Harang to get out of the inning without giving up anymore runs.

Now Fukudome, who's hitting .160 against lefties in all of 25 at-bats, is going to face a stayin'-in-there Harang. Seriously, Dusty.

First pitch swung on and missed. Fastball up and in. Fastball high. Bouncer to Phillips and the inning ends.

Can't believe. A terrible decision that worked out. Doesn't make it right.

4-3 Cubs after 6.

Dusty does what Dusty wants. Not what makes sense. Relies on luck and sometimes gets lucky. We've been burned by his bullpen management many a time this year though.

I've always thought a good at-bat was 4 pitches at least. Today only 4 Reds averaged seeing 4 or more pitches in an at-bat - Dickerson, Votto, Encarnacion, and Harang (in his one at-bat). The others:

Traveras - 17 - avg of 3.4
Phillips - 9 - avg 2.2
Gomes - 5 - 3.0
Gonzo - 10 - 2.5
Hanigan - 13 - 3.2 (note that he got three hits)

That's not the entire problem, but plays a part in it. This offense is horrible. The pitching is getting worse, and no moves are made. I guess they've given up and taken many Reds fans with them.

Thom's doing radio. That is interesting they would have Kelch on TV and not Thom.

Kelch is doing a great job today. He and Welsh sound great together. A nice break from the same 'ole same 'ole.

I thought Jim Kelch did an outstanding job on the TV side. He and Chris Welsh really worked well together. Maybe we have found a worthy successor to Uncle George.

...HARANG HITS A THREE-RUN HOME RUN. HOLY CRAP.

3-1 Reds.

Just as I predicted!

I was just thinking...."wouldn't it be ironic if Harang hit a bomb".....

I was thinking the same thing. In fact, two pitches before Aaron hit it, I said, "Ya know, that big ol' hoss is gonna get lucky some time and swing where the ball is, and he's gonna jack one!" And the very same AB, he did it!

EE screws up on the bases again. Gets himself out at the plate on an infield grounder.

Reds baseball is so much more enjoyable when you bet against them. This is flat out hysterical.

Thom Brennamen describes the way I feel perfectly almost every time.

Edwin was most likely going on contact it was a possible doubleplay ball.

Sometimes it's worth a shot, even if the runner is thrown out at the plate you still have runners at first and second with two outs and a chance to keep the inning going, where a doubleplay ends the inning and any chance of scoreing more runs that inning.

Added to that sadness is that the enthusiasm that Joe showed is nowhere to be found. Marty (and I love Marty) told it like it was today. The team is simply horrible. Jeff has stated the same things. Even Chris Welsh went on a tirade the other night. It seems that everyone sees the problems but the management and field management. You have to wonder where Joe would come down on these things. Would he be as enthusiastic? I sincerely doubt it. This is such a mess that even Joe would have had problems with it. And so it goes.
