wow....absolutely horrid. my optimism has been completely shot the last couple of years. every season since 94' has been nothing but a huge disappointment. what did we have to look forward to? a choke artist performance in 2000; terrible FO decisions; and some mind boggling trades that never cease to amaze me. I would never leave or abandon the reds because they are my team, but they need to give us fans a reason to stay around. We as fans have been accepting minor moral victories too long, we need real victories and players who want to play with enthusiasm; for the love of the game and for the love of the fans.

Id like to see what the ERA of pitchers faced is. Im expecting it to be near 5. Id look it up but dinner is catching up.

In reality the starting pitching faced by the Reds in July was a bit better than that. Using the stats accumulated up until the time they took the mound against the Reds, starting pitchers totalled 1922 IP and had given up 898 ER. This works out to a 4.20 ERA. NL starters have put up a 4.31 to date this season. So the Reds have faced slightly above league average starting pitching in July. That is bad news for the Reds. Those starting pitchers posted a 3.21 ERA for the month of July versus the hometown boys in red. A run a game on average fewer than might be expected.

Now for the really bad news. In 24 games the Reds have smacked only three starters around for four or more earned runs. This works out to a cool 12.5% of the time. In 14 of the 24 starts the Reds were limited to one or fewer earned runs. This is a hefty 58.3% of the time. Of the 24 opposing starts, 18 (or 75%) were quality starts. Of the six non-quality starts three times the other team's starter only gave up three earned runs, but missed going the requisite six innings by an inning or less. So, altogether, opposing starters limited the Reds to three or fewer earned runs 87.5% of the time.
