I just want to emphasis what a great story Lehr is. A 10 year career minor leaguer who spent part of last year in Japan, is finally getting his first major league start.

No matter what happens tonight, it's a great night for Justin. :beerme:

Lehr quickly gets ahead of leadoff batter Seth Smith 0-2. First fastball was 86.

I really hope Lehr does well tonight. Always good to start your MLB career w/ a strike.

I just pray he pitches a shutout, so he has a chance....

Doc. Scott

Count runs even on Smith. Ball three. Fouled away. Lined into left-center for a base hit. Nix drops the ball trying to throwing it in and the runner takes second.

Nice.

That Nix is some fielder, huh?

SirFelixCat
07-31-2009, 07:15 PM
And the beat goes on...horrible defense and turn a single into a double. *sigh*

Speaking of which, not that I'm complaining, but why is Nix in CF?

TheNext44
07-31-2009, 07:16 PM
Single for Smith, error on Nix in CF moves him to second.

Runner on second. No outs.

Lehr wishes he was back in Louisville already.

3 out of our 8 starting position players belong in a starting NL lineup.

Doc. Scott
07-31-2009, 07:19 PM
Clint Barmes steps in. Lehr puts his slider over for a strike. A second slider is fouled off, 0-2. Slow curve is inside and low. Fastball on the outside corner looked good, but it's ball two. Another pitch in very much the same spot called a ball again. Full count. Sizzling smash down 3B line goes just foul. Another grounder foul. Another.

Walked him. Huh. Up steps Todd Helton.

SirFelixCat
07-31-2009, 07:19 PM
And a BB...everything is being either fouled off or laid off of...doesn't bode well.

Isn't there something on the back of the ticket that implies you're going to be seeing a major league baseball game?

So far...this kid is a perfect fit for THIS rotation....

1st inning troubles, and can't throw strikes.

Doc. Scott
07-31-2009, 07:20 PM
Lehr is throwing 85-88 with a bunch of low 70s offspeed pitch.

Up and away, ball one to Helton. High, ball two. Lined to left, base hit, runners are held.

Loaded, no one out.

1-0 Rockies

Doc. Scott
07-31-2009, 07:23 PM
Brad Hawpe steps in.

Swing and a miss, strike one on a fastball. Breaking ball misses high. Roller hit towards second, force out at second is recorded- but a run scores and it's 1-0 Colorado on the first out of the inning.

Doc. Scott
07-31-2009, 07:25 PM
Troy Tulowitzki up. He's really done well in the last couple of months.

Taken strike. Swing and a miss, 0-2. Grounder to third, fair ball is by Rosales and to the LF corner for a double. 2-0 Rockies.

GAC
07-31-2009, 07:25 PM

Already up to 25 pitches with only 1 out.

Doc. Scott
07-31-2009, 07:27 PM
Rosales thought the ball was foul. Dusty's out to argue but he doesn't say too much.

Ian Stewart up. First pitch is low. Grounder to third and they catch Hawpe in a rundown! 5-2-5-1 and the tag's on the runner for out number two.

Doc. Scott
07-31-2009, 07:29 PM
Chris Iannetta up. Takes ball one. Swing and a miss, count evens. Grounder up the middle, deflected by Lehr, picked up by Phillips and relayed to first for the out.

2-0 Rockies after 1.

SirFelixCat
07-31-2009, 07:30 PM
Good damage control there and not really any hard hit balls...

Unfortunately for Lehr, a 2 run deficit is probably too much to overcome.

Two down.

Doc. Scott
07-31-2009, 07:36 PM
Votto up. Inside, ball one. Pair of fouls. Check swing, high. 2-2. Grounded hard to Barmes at second- nice play to throw Joey out.

Carlos Gonzalez leads off the second as Lehr hopes to have an easier time of it after a thirty-pitch first.

Lined into center, base hit.

Doc. Scott
07-31-2009, 07:41 PM
The pitcher Cook steps in. Ball one as he squares to bunt. Bunt's foul, 1-1. He swings away as Gonzalez goes and flies out to center.

One out for Smith.

Doc. Scott
07-31-2009, 07:42 PM
Hanigan makes a bad throw trying to get Gonzalez (on a pitchout even) but the runner can't advance.

Doc. Scott
07-31-2009, 07:43 PM
Smith hits it to Votto, who goes to the bag for out number two as the runner goes to third.

Doc. Scott
07-31-2009, 07:45 PM
Lehr falls behind Barmes 2-0, but gets a slider over for a strike. Fastball is fouled off, then ball three. Full count. Fly to left, caught by Sutton.

2-0 Rox after 1.5.

Doc. Scott
07-31-2009, 07:52 PM
Phillips slaps a 1-1 pitch into right for a single. Gomes follows him with an infield hit to put two on with nobody out.

Nix grounds to first and manages to beat the throw to first to avoid the double play. Men on the corners, one out.

Doc. Scott
07-31-2009, 07:53 PM
Gonzalez hits Cook's first pitch into fairly deep right-center, allowing Phillips to score easily. 2-1 Rockies.

Doc. Scott
07-31-2009, 07:55 PM
Hanigan steps up and gets ahead 2-0 in the count. Taken strike. Chopper up the middle is picked off by Cook and thrown to first to end the inning.

Reds get one. 2-1 Rox after 2.

Doc. Scott
07-31-2009, 07:57 PM
Helton leads off and pulls a two-hopper to Phillips. Easy first out.

Doc. Scott
07-31-2009, 08:00 PM

Doc. Scott
07-31-2009, 08:02 PM
Tulowitzki up. Lehr falls behind 3-0. Finally a strike. Fouled back to the screen, full count. Pitch taken, ball four. Looked close.

First and second, one out.

Doc. Scott
07-31-2009, 08:05 PM

3-1 Colorado, two out.

3-1 Rox after 3.

Doc. Scott
07-31-2009, 08:21 PM
Lehr is at 75 pitches through three. It's looking like we're going to see Kip Wells unless Justin can get through at least five.

Seth Smith leads off (1-for-2, R). Lehr gets ahead of him 0-2. Fastball inside. Next one is lined to center, but it hangs up for Nix. One out.

Doc. Scott
07-31-2009, 08:22 PM

Doc. Scott
07-31-2009, 08:59 PM
Helton flies out to left. 3-1 Rox after 5.5.

Top of 7. Masset back out there. He whiffs Hawpe on a slider for the Reds' first K of the evening!

Was there ever an explanation for this? My father and I actually joked that Dusty would likely send Lehr to the plate only to pull him the very next inning.

Then Dusty did it.

Every year I say "why Weathers" and he turns in a passable year in the bullpen to make me look silly. This year we might have gone a Bridge Too Far with him.

Was at the game last night. That was one dead, boring, lifeless game with the exception of the Votto/Phillips homers, the well-endowed young lady that walked around our section a bunch and the warm Cinnamon bread-sticks. We left at whatever inning that was when Weathers came in. By the time we got from the Champions Club to the crosswalk by the Freedom Center he had given up 2 runs. Good times!

That really was a mind numbing experience.

Why was Hanigan hitting 8th in that lineup?

I think the explanation would be that he hasn't swung in a week due to his sore neck. Ease him back in and all that.
