ESPN.com's Buster Olney hears that Alex Rios has been claimed on waivers by an unknown team. The Blue Jays now have three choices:

They can let the claiming team have Rios and the $60MM-plus remaining on his contract.
They can pull him back from waivers and keep him.
They can work out a deal with the claiming team.
One executive calls this an "incredible opportunity" for the Blue Jays to shed payroll.

I was going to make a thread on this. I wonder which team would be that ballsy to claim him. 60 million is 60 million no matter the player. Boston once tried to give manny away a few years ago and no one bit.

I remember when Conseco was with the Rays and they put him through waivers. The Yanks claimed him to keep him from going to Boston...but then the Rays called the Yankees bluff and just let them have Jose. Opps!

I'd personally love to see the Reds step-up and add more high profiled players before the 2010 season---spend some money ownership as you cannot take it with you when you die ;). Rios in CF would be great, then try and sign a Bay or Holliday in the off-season.

I'm guessing no one claimed Cordero, Harang, or Arroyo.

I would love to seem them claim Rios also, at the very least to show an attempt at making progress. I just feel that to much of this is wishful thinking...but we can always hope.

big contracts like the one rios has are what has held this team back and will continue to do some for the next year or two.

Reds didn't claim Rios, found this on mlbtraderumors.com

7:58pm: John Fay of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports that "someone high in the front office" confirms that the Reds did not claim Rios.

Well it didn't take long to be brought back to earth. Was hoping the Reds were in a move to start make 2010 better by adding another quality player.

So the solution is to get the very best players at very low contracts? Got it.

You've got to spend for results

I wonder if the Blue Jays just let him go, any more news on it?

You've got to spend SMARTLY for results

I fixed youre msg. You can surely spend for the sake of spending and that will get you Eric Milton, Willy Tavares, Mike Lincoln. If you spend that money SMARTLY is better than spending for the sake of spending.

Well the waiver move is official, the White Sox got him for nothing, and have to pay the remainder of the contract. I can't blame the Jays. They seem perpetually stupid with contracts as well. Look at this on Vernon Wells:

At least he only has $107 million left on his contract after this season. The Jays will pay Wells $8.5 million next year as part of a signing bonus plus a $12.5 million salary and then $23MM in 2011 and $21MM in each of 2012-2014.

Thats gotta be the stupidest long term contract in baseball history. They essentially gave one of the biggest contracts in baseball history to a guy who's barely a 4th outfielder right now.

I agree that Wells contract is ridiculous... but calling him barely a 4th OF is a bit overstated, don't you think?? The guy would still start for 80 or 90 percent of ML teams, just not at that price.

.259 with a .305 OBP would start for 80 or 90% of teams? With a whopping 12 HR's all year. He freakin sucks dude.

He wasn't sucking when that deal was made. Sometimes you get burned.

That's why you don't basically give a guy who wasn't like a top 5 player in baseball a hundred million dollar contract where you're paying him $20 mil a year. It's stupidity.

I think Wells just stopped trying to be a player after he got his money...

According to FOX Sports, Bronson and Harang have cleared waivers. Some big deals might be imminent.
