Totally off topic but I just switched over to Baseball Tonight and there was a big brawl in Boston tonight between Youkalis and Detroit pitcher Porcello! Youkalis threw his helmet at the guy and all the benches cleared and this was only in the SECOND INNING. Apparently this series between Detroit and Boston isn't very pretty with batters getting hit two nights in a row. Francona got thrown out of the game too at some point for arguing about something. What a crazy game!

Sorry to tangent but I'm a little surprised that so much action happened in less than three innings of that game. OK, back to the Reds vs. Redbirds. Go Reds! :D

How is it Berry's fault that Dickerson was not paying attention to what was clearly in front of him?

It was not like the ball was hit into the gap......it was a play in front of him that all he had to do was look at...and see that Lehr was stopping at 3rd.

Maybe the reason Berry did not give him the stop sign was beacuse he thought CD was smart enough to look up?

Gomes' two assists suggest otherwise. Lehr will have success in the majors the same way other guys who can't miss bats do -- don't walk guys and keep the ball in the yard. You can spread 10 hits and only give up 1 run on occasion if you're giving up walks in bombs in the meantime. It's when guys like that start trying to paint corners, fall behind in the count, and then groove one on 3-1 that it gets ugly.

No one on base when he hit it though and then Masset sat down Holliday with a K so I'm not too worried yet. It's really hard to keep Albert down for a whole game, LOL

Apparently, tonight is the night for impotent offenses to break out.

Reds winning 5-2 (okay, it's not "breaking out" but it's also not 1 or 2 runs either)
Pads winning 13-4 (8th) over Brewers
Royals winning 12-2 (8th) over Twinkies

He simply does NOT look like the same defender when he's not in center. I'm positive he can handle left & right, but he does NOT look comfortable there yet. I don't think he's had anywhere near enough playing time in those 2 slots down in the minors. Of course I could be wrong, but it sure looks that way.

Your definition of a hard hit ball must be different than mine. I have watched the entire game and most of those nine hits have been pretty soft Puff.

I'm talking about the balls that haven't been hits.

Has he had one swing and miss yet?

When you strike out nobody, you will give up lots of hits.

That's my take as well. He just takes poor routes to the ball when he plays the corners. I wonder how he grades out on the defensive metrics.

I think it's something as simple as he's not reading the ball off the bat at the different angle as quickly as he does in center...thus the hurried routes. Of course I'm far from an expert on it. I only played short.

Bottom line though is 1 run is 1 run. Which earns him another tryout with the club in 5 days. He wasn't great tonight but he was effective and more than likely will get his second win with the club. Seems like people are searching for reasons not to like the fact that he has done the job in these two starts. Plus he can tell his kids that he took care of Pujols.

Your job as the trail runner is NOT to watch the runner ahead of you but to look at the base coach. Berry was 25 feet down the line, so far that you can barely see his uniform on the screen. When you do see him he's waving his arms around and confusing anyone and everyone. Berry did a bad job there. Just my opinion.

Cost the Reds a run in a game that they won by 1. Neither player was ready to take that throw by Phillips. So he air mails it to space. Lots of blame to go around on that play.

I agree that they've hit the ball hard off Lehr, but several hits shouldn't have been hits. The "D" hasn't really helped him tonight.

I wish noting but the best for Justin Lehr but hard hit balls have a funny way of turning into base hits, extra base hits and runs scored, no matter how good your defense is.

I'll be rooting for Lehr but sooner or later your luck runs out.

That was a weird game. Even as the Cards were collecting the hits, there was never the feeling that they were going to bust it open. In fairness, for every at-em ball, there were about 3 dribblers for hits as well off Lehr. That 9th inning was nuts, but you could tell Holliday wasn't seeing the ball off Coco. For some reason, he looked lost in that AB.

HokieRed
08-12-2009, 10:31 AM
We had 7 W's, they had 2. Lehr, despite the hits, walked only 1 in 6. We turned two infield DP's. For me, in some ways the story of the game was our missed opportunties. We could have closed that game out several times long before the end.

As long as he still maintains a decent number of walks, limits his strikeouts...I'm fine with him. His defense makes him a more than capable starter IMO.

But this will be his challenge. Once pitchers realize he can't get more than a single, no one will walk him. IMO, he'll never have the SLG to be an everyday guy. He's going to have to be very lucky to have a .675 OPS.
