Janish SS
Votto 1B
Phillips 2B
Rolen 3B
Gomes RF

Cueto P

Cueto gave up a 2 out double to Jones but comes back to K Doumit. 2 K's, no runs.

Old McDonald? Wow.

Cueto looked like Cueto in the 1st.

Tom Servo

Yet another hit for Stubbs.

Tom Servo
08-31-2009, 07:24 PM
Janish with a fantastic at-bat. Goes to 3-2 and he doubles down the left field line to score Stubbs. 1-0 Reds.

Tom Servo
08-31-2009, 07:28 PM
Janish advances to 3rd on a Votto GO and scores on a BP single. 2-0 Reds.

Rolen singles and BP goes to 2nd. 2 on, 1 out.

Stubbs has played well so far, following a pattern wherein he does well early at each level. Good to see. Hope he continues to play like this. He certainly adds an element of adequacy-- offensively and defensively-- not seen since... Cameron roamed CF for the Reds?

He certainly looks like Cameron out there. His range is ridiculous and his arm is well above average. He can steal 50 bases right now on speed alone.

The only question is his bat.

Tom Servo
08-31-2009, 07:32 PM
Gomes with a ground ruled double. BP scores and Rolen to third. 3-0 Reds.

Old McDonald ends the consecutive hits. E-I-E-I-K. 2 out.

Corky walks, bases juiced for Cueto.

Miller with a good AB leading to the bases loaded for Cueto. Johnny be good!

lol Cueto thought he was caught looking but it's called a ball.

I thought for sure the Pirates would have raised heck over that call. Everyone in the bldg. thought that was a strike.

08-31-2009, 07:50 PM
The guys in the dugout had some good laughs at poor Cueto's expense during that part of his at bat, LOL

Johnny looks pretty good tonight. That's nice to see from him. :)

HeatherC1212
08-31-2009, 08:02 PM
Another nice inning by Cueto and that was a great play by Rolen. :)

McDonald buys himself another game with a hit. ;)

You know, he doesn't look like the same player that was here at the beginning of the season but maybe that's just my opinion. He's doing all right so good for him. :)

While MacDonald is a very bad player by major league standards, he's no where near as bad as he looked earlier this season.

No one can be.

He'll get some hits and play some D. Just don't expect much.

08-31-2009, 08:29 PM
Joey is definitely going through another rough patch. :(

KoryMac5
08-31-2009, 08:33 PM

Mostly fastballs and changeups from Cueto tonight -- love it. Seemed like he didn't even have a changeup for a long stretch earlier this year -- it was all fastball slider. Now they've gotten him off that dependence on the slider and it's made a nice difference. Credit to Pole or whomever.

Cueto, after a rest, has resumed pitching well.

That HR is going to be reviewed but it could have stayed fair. Wow, I think it went OVER the foul pole!!!

Gomes walks, McDonald up.

HeatherC1212
08-31-2009, 08:49 PM
Maholm settled down pretty well and it would be great to get him out of the game in this inning. It may be his last one anyway since he's over a hundred pitches now.

Edit: Oh gracious, don't let Pettite throw a freaking no hitter against the O's. They all ready had one thrown against them by a Red Sox guy. They don't need one against a Yankee too. :bang:

HeatherC1212
08-31-2009, 09:13 PM
DRH coming out, Masset coming in.

_Sir_Charles_
08-31-2009, 09:13 PM
He continues to have trouble with righties.

They're pulling him? Leave him in to face a righty, but pull him with a lefty coming up? That's an odd move to say the least.

HeatherC1212
08-31-2009, 09:16 PM
One pitch and Masset ends the inning. WE NEED MORE RUNS NOW!

_Sir_Charles_
08-31-2009, 09:16 PM
Just checked...it's what I thought.

Right handers hitting .336 off Herrera
Lefties hitting .202

Don't get the timing of this pitching change.

KoryMac5
08-31-2009, 09:17 PM
They're pulling him? Leave him in to face a righty, but pull him with a lefty coming up? That's an odd move to say the least.

Chris stated on the broadcast that DRH was leaving a lot of pitches up in the zone. He felt it could be a sign of fatigue. Looked to me like he was laboring out there. He's around 54 innings for the season I think his high in the minors was 65 or so.

KoryMac5
08-31-2009, 09:19 PM
Denny Bautista on to face the Reds. We haven't been real lucky against relievers lately, but he's not a Dodger.

_Sir_Charles_
08-31-2009, 09:20 PM
But couldn't you tell he was struggling prior to facing his last batter? If you're even considering pulling him, you do it with a right hander at the plate, right? If you're unsure but a lefty's due up...you give him the benefit of the doubt. At least that's the way I'd look at it.

And I'm not one for calling out Dusty either. I think he's handled the staff beautifully. Just don't get the timing on that one.

KoryMac5
08-31-2009, 09:21 PM

It's hard to get inside Dusty's head I just think he wanted to get an inning out of DRH and not go to Masset. When Pitts scored to go 4-3 he may have felt like he wanted to stop the momentum and bring Masset in who has been his stopper in tight spots.

I'm afraid to say something (thinking I'll jinx him or something), but Janish has looked VERY comfortable at the plate of late. How many 2 hit games has he had recently. Quite a few it seems.

It's all right. We won't hold it against you. Just don't do it again. ;)

Two outs now, one to go. Didn't Masset only throw like four pitches yesterday? Why would it be bad to use him here?

Terrific outing by Massett. He just mowed them down that inning. Still I guess Dusty will pull him now.

My guess, by process of elimination, is that Burton will go the eighth. Whether Coco pitches the ninth will depend on the score. If it's a one run game still, he probably will pitch.

Would be nice for Reds to open a lead and protect this bullpen a little.

5-1 Yanks. Final. They got 2 on in the ninth, but Rivera came on and shut the door. I find it absolutely amazing that Mariano has been doing it at such a high level for such a long time. Has there EVER been a reliever even CLOSE to as good as he's been?

Oh, and sorry Heather.

KoryMac5
08-31-2009, 09:58 PM
I might send Rhodes back out for the 9th. See if he gets into trouble or not. CoCo is gassed and needs the night off. Plus Rhodes wasn't taxed in the 8th.

_Sir_Charles_

WORD. And tell the announcers to stop talking about how injury free the bullpen's been before one of them explodes out there tonight.

Notice I didn't mention anything about Paul during his AB. Works a nice BB.

Votto probably could use a day off around now. Give Barker a start at first later in this series.

HeatherC1212

I think Joey is pressing a little now. He wants so badly to do something to help the team and it doesn't always work that way. RELAX Joey! :(

*heads downtown* :p:

Give Barker the start tomorrow since Joey will have played eighteen innings today. I think that would help him out a lot too.

KoryMac5

Vottomatic may need a day off to recharge his battery. He's been playing at a pretty constant clip here for awhile now. With Barker up that may happen.

08-31-2009, 10:12 PM
Well, I guess Joey was due to have a slump this year. It must be nice to slump this badly and STILL have your average at .300. Tough to complain about anything Votto does. By FAR, my favorite current Red.

Not a fan of this move at all, but I am sending my positive vibes to CoCo.

Cordero in for the ninth. We may need MacGyver and his roll of duct tape to keep Cordero's arm from simply dropping off here shortly.

Over the past 3 games, the 1 & 2 hitters are hitting a combined .407.

Over the past 7 games, they're hitting a combined .318.

And we've won 5 of those 7 games.

Amazing what not having Votto come up with 2 outs in the first can do for a team

It would be even MORE amazing if we could do that when Votto's not slumping.

But hey, we won. So it's all good.

4 behind Houston. May not matter to a lot of folks but I think it would matter to this team.
