I'll be watching Cueto closely tonight... hoping to see him continue to come back strong from the injury...

does Jay Bruce have cooties? shouldn't he be playing RF every day until the season is over?

does Jay Bruce have cooties? shouldn't he be playing RF every day until the season is over?

They are trying to protect him against LH pitching.

And it's not like he's had one decent hit since he returned.

Hey there! A two-bagger for Stubbs.

I don't think there's enough "O's" in the word "smooth" to describe Stubbs' stride.

I don't think there's enough "O's" in the word "smooth" to describe Stubbs' stride.

It's almost enough to make me think thoughts manly thoughts about another.

But not quite (not that there's anything wrong with that).

After 4 innings, Pirates 2, Reds 0.

Cueto at 83 pitches, 57 strikes, with 1 K.
Duke at 58 pitches, 40 strikes, with 2 Ks.

Stubbs had a double and a walk in the same game?

Whaa?

_Sir_Charles_
09-22-2009, 08:38 PM
One heck of a rally here. 5-2 Reds. Janish nearly hit into an inning ending DP but an error let the inning continue. Then the avalanche for Duke. :O)

WebScorpion
09-22-2009, 08:50 PM
After 5 complete it's Reds 5 - Bucs 2.

Cueto at 101 pitches, Zach Duke at 82.

_Sir_Charles_
09-22-2009, 08:55 PM
0 walks, 2 k's, but 9 hits allowed. Tons of fouled off balls. 101 pitches. And Dusty handles him correctly again. Cueto's done. (bunting for the sac...but I'm sure DRH is coming in)

Nice to see Hernandez back. I'd love to see the Reds resign him.

_Sir_Charles_
09-22-2009, 09:08 PM
Hererra gives up a double and single back to back and Dusty pulls him for Ramon Ramirez. Well, we went with a double-Drew lineup the other day....how about a Ramon-Ramon battery. :O)

1 down, 2 on.

_Sir_Charles_
09-22-2009, 09:11 PM
Big K there for Ramon! 2 down. Diaz PH'ing

_Sir_Charles_

Leadoff single by Janish, takes an outside heater the other way.

_Sir_Charles_
09-22-2009, 09:18 PM
This looks like the old Votto we were used to seeing in the first half. Good eye at the plate and working the count. 2 doubles on the day so far.

And now a walk.

Man. This kid Veal is all over the place.

_Sir_Charles_
09-22-2009, 09:22 PM
LOL. Brandon with a weak flyout to center. And he CLEARLY drops the F-bomb and tosses his bat away. I guess with a crowd this sparce...we're gonna hear some cussin'. :O)

_Sir_Charles_
09-22-2009, 09:23 PM
Single off the glove of Cedeno by Rolen. 6-3 Reds. 1st & 3rd still 1 out.

Pedro Viola in for the 8th.

Rosales in as well, for Rolen.

HeatherC1212

_Sir_Charles_
09-22-2009, 10:23 PM

HeatherC1212
09-22-2009, 10:24 PM
Oh my word. I promise that I will TYPE MY PEP TALKS LOUDER NEXT TIME. ;) What the heck was that half inning?! I stepped away for a few minutes and came back to Viola and Fisher walking half of PNC Park. SERIOUSLY GUYS?!?!? :bang:

Ok, I feel better now. Let's just win this game now, okay?!

_Sir_Charles_
09-22-2009, 10:26 PM
We hadn't allowed a single walk all game up to that inning. 3 from Viola/Fisher.

HeatherC1212

Hmmmm, good question about the rivers. There did used to be a big fort right there where the rivers meet (I saw where it used to be when I visited Pittsburgh earlier this summer) so there could have been some random boat battles in the past. Maybe some Pirates got bored and decided to play some baseball when they weren't busy stealing and causing trouble, LOL ;)

The Alleghenys were accused of stealing a player from the American Association. They denied wrongdoing, but mockingly called themselves the Pirates after that.

If this club (the one including Janish at short, Rolen at third, Stubbs in center and Gomes starting) had started the season, the Reds would be over .500 and maybe contending. Life is sometimes very cruel.

They have a real good shot. Five more with the fast fading Pirates and three with the equally fast fading Astros. Also three with the Cards who will probably have clinched the Division by next week. Whether this fast finish means anything towards next season remains to be seen?

I think it's interesting that the Pirates have already clinched last place. You know it's a bad year when you're 13 GB the 5th place team.

The Pirates as a group right know are playing like they don't even care. They're one dead team to play

Yes, as BCubb2003 said, the Pittsburg (no "h" at the end) Alleghenys, as the club was originally known from their inception in 1882 until 1890, had a reputation for "raiding" other clubs for their talent. Hence the nickname "Pirates", and the moniker stuck.

That would be Fort Duquesne and/or Fort Pitt. Fort Duquesne was a French stronghold during the French and Indian War. It was razed and abandoned by French forces, who fled before the advancing British Army under General John Forbes (the man after whom Forbes Field was named). The British then built the larger and stronger Fort Pitt on the site. The remains of Fort Duquesne and Fort Pitt can be found at Point State Park, commonly referred to as "The Point".
