1-0 Reds, top of 2.

This place is as lively as GABP.

Janish scored on a Phillips groundball (after advancing on another Votto hit - who is hot lately). Then Homer sat down the Pirates 1-2-3 in the bottom of the 1st

membengal

Six up, six down for Bailey. He retired the side in the second on three ground balls.

Bailey Ks, then Stubbs singles to CF.

One on, one out. Janish up. Because that's where SS bats.

How did Milledge not catch that?

_Sir_Charles_
09-23-2009, 07:53 PM
Ah, darn it. It was a nice aggressive attempt, but Brandon nailed at second trying to advance on Rolen's flyout. But Votto still scores. 4-0 Redlegs.

Rolen SF to center to drive in Votto, but Phillips caught trying to get to second on the throw.

I've noticed but then again, I tend to notice anything and everything about Joey. :p: Too bad my fantasy team is done for the year or else I'd really be raking in some points, LOL

Can we please play the Pirates for the rest of the season?! :D

membengal

Slight delay for Stubbs to put on new pants, as he had a hole near his rear from his sliding in the last half inning.

Brutus

This is not pie-in-the-sky. I really like what we've seen from this offense on the whole the past few weeks. I still would like to see an upgrade at shortstop, but beyond that, I really like this group as at least a good start heading into next year. Then perhaps if they stay in contention, they can make another move or two. In any event, it's not an 800 runs type of team, but it's not a bad group.

Votto doubles to LF over Milledge's head. Stubbs scores.

How did Milledge not catch that?

He didn't start moving with the ball off the bat. When the camera panned out to the outfield he was still standing still before he started running.

I moved from Memphis to Baltimore on August 1. Hidden good thing in that move? Memphis was considered "reds country" and I was blacked out unless it was on FSN Ohio. Now, in Baltimore, I am good to go regardless of the feed.

Much better this way.

Much.

membengal

And the Cardinals may have clinched the Central by the time they come to town so who knows how many of their guys they'll be playing by that point. I like the schedule too. :D

Nice play to get the lead runner and that play at first was pretty close.

Indeed. I moved from New Jersey to North Carolina last year where I figured I would get nothing but Braves games, and yet I get feed from FSN Tennessee which gives me every Reds game broadcast on FSN Ohio.

Heather, I do like the direction of the Orioles, at least, I love the potential in a lot of their young arms. Matusz and Tillman especially. But the O's are on their 12th straight losing season, and it is clear from the locals that they are out of patience with Angelos and the whole deal. Sad to see such a proud franchise at this level.

Frankly, they remind me of Reds fans. It's like looking in a mirror.

Oh goodness, I totally agree. That's probably why my heart follows the Orioles so much now. I can see in their fans a lot of the same things we're going through with the Reds. They do have a good core building which is good (their minor leagues were even more bare than ours were a couple of years ago) and hopefully they can turn things around soon. Camden Yards is a GORGEOUS park and the fans are so great there. :)

Nice to see Jay get a hit tonight!

_Sir_Charles_
09-23-2009, 08:09 PM

Nice to see Jay with a hit.

09-23-2009, 08:13 PM
It would surprise the heck out of me. Until they get some quality starters...I don't see them going anyplace. Position players though...I really like where they're headed.

Their starters are all pretty young but there's a nice group there right now. They've shut down a few of them after they hit their innings marks for the year but for rookies, they weren't too bad this year. Tillman, Matusz, Bergeson (he's been shut down after getting injured during a game several weeks ago), and Hernandez all have decent potential and Guthrie has had a bit of a Harang like year this year after having two solid years for the O's previously. They could use a veteran guy to help stabilize things for a year or two though. They also have some younger arms still working in the minor leagues so I think their pitching is actually coming around. I really like Matusz out of that group and Arrieta has a lot of potential too (he's at AAA right now). If you ask Orioles fans what they like about their team, I think most of them would tell you "Nothing!" because they're over the whole rebuilding thing and would love to see the O's not lose 100 game this year, LOL

No more O's talk from me....back to the Reds now. Sorry about that! :D

Nasty split finger there from Bailey. Goodness. On an 0-1 pitch. Bottom dropped out and came in at 83 just off the plate and below the knees. Swinging strike. Guy had o chance.

Votto back over 313 for the season. In 501 AB's: 313/407/547 950+ OPS.

Without the 25-day stay on the DL, this is that near-MVP the Reds could hitch their wagon to, year in and year out.

Best season by a Red 1B since... Lee May in '71? Klu?

You should keep stepping away every time Joey comes to bat, LOL

Apparently, that's true. I stepped away again after Joey's double...got back after the inning ended...and we've got 8 freaking runs! I miss all the fun stuff. *sigh*

Good night membengal! :)

The only runs the Pirates have gotten tonight are on sac flies. It's now 8-2 Reds.

Same here. Since I'm leaving again...I suppose we'll score 25 tonight. :D

How bad are the Pirates as of now? These guys are "runnin' for the bus".

HeatherC1212
09-23-2009, 09:02 PM
I'll try to do a little PBP but I'm now switching between Law & Order: SVU and the game so I can't promise anything. :)

Inning over now. Onto the 6th, I think?? Dang this game is slow tonight.

Someone grounded out and then Drew struck out so two outs for the Reds.

HeatherC1212

Janish grounds out and its on to the bottom of the 6th inning now.

Moss flies out to center and Cedeno grounds out.

Walker flies out and the inning is over. Time for the 7th and Joey leads off the next inning. :)

Joey leads off with a single to right field. This is how he started off the year! Wow. That's awesome to see for him. :)

Homer has a 1-2-3 6th, but he's at 95 pitches. Coincidentally, 3 of his last 4 pitches were clocked at 95. :D He actually throws harder as the game progresses. That's got to be tough on hitters...especially these young Pirates.

Meanwhile we've found the cure for our anemic offense...play the Pirates more!

HeatherC1212
09-23-2009, 09:18 PM
Rolen hits a single and Joey gets to third base beating the throw from Milledge. REALLY heads up base running by Joey. Gotta love a guy going 1st to 3rd during a game with a six run lead, LOL :D

Haven't watched too many games lately, but Bruce's at bats look better to me. More patient. Had a nice level swing earlier in this game. Hopeful sign.

Pitching change for the Pirates....

I think the walk says more about his altered approach than the 2-for-3 night he's having so far. Good sign!

Bases juiced with one out and Nix hits an infield fly off Phil "pitch to contact" Dumatrait. The rest of the team looks pretty loose...not Laynce.

Denny Bautista in to pitch to Corky "Fear the 'Stache" Miller. Walks in a run on 4 pitches. Reds 9 - Bucs 2

Barker K's for the last out of the 7th and it's time to stretch.

Edited because I mised who actually struck out. :p:

_Sir_Charles_

Burton pitching for the Reds now.

WebScorpion
09-23-2009, 09:31 PM
Miller (was it Corky?) K's for the last out of the 7th and it's time to stretch.
It was Barker pinch hitting for Bailey, so Homers night is over: 6 IP, 4 Hits, 3 BB, 0 Ks, 2 R, 2 ER. With the run support he got, he better get win #6.

Love it when we quote things and they don't exist later...

1-2-3 for Burton.

Strange seeing a Bailey outing without any strikeouts. But he's actually PITCHING now instead of just throwing. Having success without having your best stuff. More promising signs for young Mr. Bailey.

Inning update courtesy of Yahoo:

Cedeno says OLE!

Line drive to first, throw to short and it goes thru his legs. Double digit runs for the 2nd night in a row.

LOL. oh-fer for Nix...but with 2 ribbies.

HeatherC1212
09-23-2009, 10:02 PM
Well, that's a way for Laynce to get on base and to score another run.

09-23-2009, 10:09 PM
That's how you stop Votto....you get Janish out. No sixth ab for Joey. Durnit

HeatherC1212

Nope, Joey's hitting night should be over. Who comes out to pitch the ninth? I vote for Janish. :D

Totally random: I took that boat tour along the three rivers in Pittsburgh and it's a really nice tour of the city. I wish we could have seen a game at PNC but the Pirates were out of town.

Ramon Ramirez in to pitch.

Okay, make that 22 runs in 2 days minus the longball. You can blame it on "we're playing the Bucs" if you want to...but this team has been playing VERY good baseball for several weeks now. And against some good competition for the most part.

The problem is the Reds sending Pythagorus to the minors over the summer. Calling him up in September is nice, but you gotta have him on the roster for the entire 2010 season.
