Cardinals Ankiel could go to Reds or Pirates

By Mark Miller

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Rick Ankiel(notes) is soon to be a free agent and it isn't believed he'll be returning to the Gateway to the West. Rumor has it that the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates want the fella who has hit 36 homers over the last two years, according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

It might be good for Ankiel to move on from the Cardinals where he suffered a famous meltdown during the 2000 postseason when he was a rookie pitcher who had just won 11 games and struck out 194 batters. He suddenly couldn't throw strikes. The guy continued to suffer as a pitcher before dumping it to become an outfielder, where he surprisingly has been able to rise back to major-league level. Of course there was a little help from HGH in those early comeback days, but that's old news.

Now it's looking like Ankiel will be playing elsewhere next season and that could be best for all involved.

Why in the world would we want a lighter-slugging version of Laynce Nix?!?!

I guess it's just easy to lump us in with the Pirates whenever discussions of a scrap-heap reject come up eh?

If the 2010 OF consists of Bruce/Stubbs and some sort of LF platoon, I would take Dickerson over Ankiel.

So, we would have a hitting pitcher who can't pitch and a pitching hitter who can't hit?
