I am too. I realy grew to enjoy Tim Olyphant as Deadwood went on.

I have heard it described as the yang to Sons of Anarchy's ying. Being that the guys of Samcro are 40% good/60% bad, Tim Olyphant's character is supposed to be 60/40 good, kind of like a small town Vic Mackey.

Absolutely great!

So quotable. I will be watching that episode again.

A breathe of fresh air.

"Should I kill him or wing him?"

"He pulled first, so I shot him."

"Lysol is the best cleaning product ever."

Timothy Olyphant is cool as ice. He did great in the Crazies too.

For a first episode it was pretty engaging. Some of the slower parts felt a bit too much like "talking heads" but hey it's the pilot, pace/energy should improve going forward. Definitely going to watch this every week.

Elmore Leonard's stamp is unmistakable. Love his characters.

Timothy Olyphant is a Clint Eastwood in the making down to the flinty stare.

A little off topic, but you should take a listen to Kathy Mattea's Coal. Harlan County figures prominently.

Funny you should mention that. In the recap for the pilot of Deadwood on Television Without Pity, the recapper said, "(H)e's got the squinty, low-talking, high noon thing going on to the extreme. To such an extreme that, if I were mean, I could call him Clench Eastwood."

I DVRed it too and I'm looking forward to watching it.

Really liked the premire as well, some great lines.

My favorite:

Boyd: "I will extend you the same offer, if you ain't out of Harlan county by noon tomorrow, I'm gonna come lookin for you"

Raylen: "Now your talkin'"

I will def be watching this in the future.

The key about the future of the series was the conversation he had with his new boss early on in the episode. About how each field agent does all the functions of the Marshall service. Prisoner transfer, witness protection, investigation, etc, etc. I imagine you will see a Walker, Texas Ranger type of weekly story line, fit into a longer FX style story arc.

I DVR'd it and watched it. It was OK but I don't care for violent shows like this one. I watched mainly to see how authentic it was since I am originally from Harlan County. The accents were good. It sounded like the mountain accent not a Texas drawl like you see on movies set in the Appalachian mountains. Where it was filmed wasn't quite like Harlan. The mountains in SE Ky, especially in Harlan County, are bigger and steeper than the one's on the show. The one's on the show were more rolling hills than mountains. Also the town didn't look like Harlan but I guess that doesn't matter that much to the average person watching it. I'm not sure I have ever heard of any rocket launchers down there either. That was kind of odd I thought for someone in a rural area like that to have one of those. I thought Timothy Olyphant was really good. Very Clint Eatwood like. The others were pretty average. I may watch another episode or two but beyond that I probably won't watch.

It seems they switched back and forth between Lexington and Harlan County a lot so I wasn't sure where all the stuff took place. When thery blew up that church, it seemed like it was in a city rather than a rural place. It also seemed like they had him going back and forth between Lexington and Harlan County quite a bit like he was going back and forth between Cincy and Dayton.

It might have been that the logistics of filming on location were too difficult. I'm sure it would have been a bit more authentic to film there or in a place like it but probably not too realistic for the actors and production crew.

The Pittsburgh area, which, other than eastern KY, is pretty much coal central in American. I think they sent a crew to get establishing shots of the real Harlan Co. and Lexington to use throughout the series though.

That church was in Lexington,I think. They did make it seem like it was quick trip from Harlan to Lexington. It's just over 2 1/2 hours. So it's not as quick as they made it seem.
I'm sure the logistics of filming there would be difficult. Not many nice motels/hotels or restaurants in the Harlan area. Nothing fancy for the stars. That's for sure.

I thought last nights episode was really good too. They threw a total Clint Eastwood line in there. Right after Olyphant is locked in the bathroom of that gas station he says "Well....(crap)." That was dead on Eastwood.

Still following it and love it.

Elmore Leonard's fingerprints are all over this show. Great characters with depth. Just his last episode with Raylan's ex-wife, stupid husband Gary, football player Toby, quirky bad guys, etc. etc. The Crowther family lurking. Raylan's life and job are all messed up.

And not many shows would let the main character get the snot beat out of him in the first 5 minutes to set up the plot. Love it.

Exactly. It started shot out of a cannon and then had a couple back to back shows that slowed it down. The last 3 episodes have really picked up the pace and storyline. Walter Goggins' character Boyd Crowder is a hoot.

Gotta disagree, Sons has much more heart, story, legacy, and mystery. I find myself wondering what will happen next and how will they get there, after every episode. Justified doesn't really keep me thinking between episodes. If you can track down the final four episodes of season 2 of SOA, watch it. It was epic.

Quoted for truth.

The scene where they have the rumble out in the sticks and the cops come and save Henry Rollins by arresting him was one of the more powerful scenes in recent memory, and probably my favorite moment in the series so far.

Great finale last night. Great action, fantastic story-telling, tied the last episode back to the first, brough the season to a satisying close, and set up some veeeeerrry interesting plot lines for next year with Boyd Crowder and the woman from Florida, Ava and Winona, and what to do about Arlo.

I think Walton Goggins is Emmy-worthy as Boyd Crowder.

We haven't commented much on Arlo, but man that guy is interesting too. Anyone notice that he pocketed the money the Marshalls gave him, instead of giving it to Bo Crowder?

There is the whole Miami connection too. I don't they are too happy about what transpired and I don't think they are going to just stop.

And then you've got dad Arlo and the whole Ava vs. Winona love life thing.

But yeah, I'd like to see other plot lines. They did do a good job of developing other characters and plot lines up till the last couple episodes so I'm hopeful.

And I wouldn't be surprised to see Bo and Johnny and whoever else back again. Nobody was definitively dead.

And Boyd is an intriguing character with a wildly ambiguous relationship to Raylan. It wasn't that long ago that Raylan shot him and then the show ended with Boyd calling Raylan his only friend. And there is the born-again Christian vs. meth dealer part of it.

I thought they took the easy way out involving the Dixie Mafia with the Crowders. But I thought they did it well.

I liked Arlo and I'd like to see more of him. I liked Ava too but it started getting to be too much of "The Perils of Pauline" with those two.

Boyd's great. I said upthread that I hoped it wasn't going to be like the Road Runner cartoons with Raylan and Boyd and it turned out not to be like that at all. I was pleased with the way they handled Boyd and he was great in the last episode. I know Raylan's his friend and he helped save Ava but he does have a couple murders to answer for and some other stuff.

I also said this upthread but it annoyed me the way they had Harlan be almost a suburb of Lexington. But I think you have to fanwank some things.

indeed, chip.

just finished justified season 1 on dvd. i like it alot...and the notion of a different setting...

however, as a bluegrass resident, i kept thinking, jeez, it's almost impossible to get from lex. to harlan :) and they keep zipping back and forth every day and night. topographically, they certainly didn't capture either the bluegrass or the mountains of eastern ky with western pa and l.a. over and over, it's off-putting to me, although i realize it shouldn't matter a hill of beans to viewers not familiar with the commonwealth.

getting past that...i've loved timothy olyphant since the first episode of deadwood and walton goggins especially since he stole the last season of the shield. raylan and boyd rock, and arlo givens is an old reprobate. i like raylan's boss alot. a character himself, elmore leonard always comes up with some doozies.

alas, having long since given up our directv, i'll be waiting a bit for season 2, and thus won't be able to read this thread due to spoilers. :)

I'm with you there. Anyone outside the area has absolutely no idea of the distance, geography, and topography of the areas. For the sake of the show, it's just best not to think about it.

The last epsiode was flat out amazing. Mags Bennett is definitely one of the best characters on tv right now, and to be the 3rd most interesting character on the show has to say something. Obviously the hit on Raylon and Wynonna, was meant for Wynonna. The previews for next week imply that Raylon thinks they were targeting him. Obviously Gary wanted to keep the insurance policy during the divorce settlement, he also spoke with the Dixie Mafia about a business proposal.

That math is 1+1=-6

I think Mags Bennett is royally pissed off that Raylan and Arlo forced her to turn Dickie. And I think she is going to attempt revenge. Mags ain't the kind of woman you want to cross.

I thought Jeremy Davies' performance as Dickie last night was stellar. I thought him as just a jittery idiot all season but last night showed much depth with his pleading and faceoffs with both Mags and Raylan. I actually felt sorry for him.

This season, Justified has become the show I thought it could be.

Good season finale, but left me with one question, maybe I missed something.

Boyd made a clandestine deal with one of Doyle Bennet's deputies. What was the deal for? What did he get? Did I miss something?

Only thing I can think of is that he got information from him that the Bennetts were going to go to Ava's and Johnny's and that's how Johnny knew to blow up his house with those guys in it and why Devil was on the look out at Ava's.

That seems right, just seems like it could have been written a little better. This was a good season.

Well, it kinda was. When Doyle took phone call and then hung up Boyd said to him, "Didn't go as planned?"

So that was their tip off.....

The whole thing was covered but it was just a bit clunky. Not trying to pick on it, it just wasn't as smooth or as cool as it should have been.

Could I have that back?

How about Arlo shooting Dep. Tom Dempsey, and then we find out later in the show it was probably mistaken identity, and that he actually intended to shoot Raylan?

"Disarmed" sounds like cop humor. "Slaughterhouse" indeed.

Raylan scares the absolute bejesus out of Wynn Duffy. I guess I'm warped, I thought that was funny.

Boyd Crowder walks, to Raylan's dismay.

Ava pulls Ellen Mae off her customer in mid-hump and finally just punches her. Nice straight right. Pow.

I bet Arlo either gets off or gets a light sentence and we haven't seen the end of him. "Man in a hat".

I'm going to miss Quarles/Neal McDonough. Quite the creepy, scary, but somehow a little funny character. Between Quarles and his role on "Desperate Housewives", McDonough plays the creepy guy well.

Nice little ending scene with Raylan and Loretta (love the names on this show). Raylan wears his hat to bed?

I thought it was funny too. Jere Burns is gold and I hope he comes back.

Boyd Crowder walks, to Raylan's dismay.

I don't think Raylan wants Boyd out with the same fervor that he wanted Quarles dead. Boyd has proved useful for Raylan in the past.

Ava's pretty tough although if a male pimp did to Ellen Mae what she did, he'd be a villian - like Delroy.

He was great but they always seem to come up with great characters.

Loretta was the 14 year old girl who got Mags's money last week. Winona is who you are thinking of. That was kind of sad. He has to walk around knowing his father wanted to kill him.

Here's a good interview with Graham Yost about season 3

Augh, yep, that's who I meant. Between Ava, Loretta, and Winona, too many names that end in -a. Sounds like a durn 60's country music billing.

Speaking of Loretta and the money, I loved her deadpan line last week of "Marshal, do I strike you in any way as a Van Halen fan?".

Love reading those Graham Yost interviews.

Season 1 was a one-of-a-kind mix of dark comedy and grit. The show hasn't reached those heights since. Now, it's merely a good cop show with one or two funny lines per episode. I'm really disappointed -- I loved Season 1.

I disagree. Season 2 was the best season. Season 3 started out even stronger but faded just a bit towards the end. The Quarles arc was just a little too long. I loved Season 1 as well, but Raylan could not keep up the body count he piled up in Season 1 and have the show maintain any sense of reality. It's TV so there is some obvious creative license, but Raylan couldn't keep pulling out his gun every episode.

I do think the show is at its strongest when it is Olyphant v. Goggins. I think we will see more of that in Season 4, especially after Arlo's actions in the last two episodes of Season 3.

Fabulous lines last night:

"I met Arlo in front of a ***** house in Saigon. He was reading a Louis Lamour novel and had just dropped LSD. He was convinced the he guy's name that dosed him was in the book".

"Molotov cocktail? Last time I saw one of those was at a Guns 'n Roses concert in '89"

“Drew? The doctor on TV? …Nancy Drew? …Drewbacca?… Drew Mama?”

“People underestimate Bob at their peril.”

“I would like a young Gerard Depardieu to play me”

"Well I'll be damned, they circled the wagons"

I sure thought Bob was done. Figured they had hired Patton for one season and done. I did like seeing Boyd scared for once for his life, that was new. I don't watch much TV AT ALL but I don't miss this show ever. Love it.

Saw an interview with Walton Goggins (Boyd Crowder) a couple months ago. Was totally weird to hear him speak "normal" and not in "four word sentences" and quoting scripture.

Just when it looked like Boyd had cleared the way for Ava to get out, she gets seriously framed. Boyd kinda lost his mind. It was getting too tidy.
