Leake will go 5, followed by 2 from Chapman, and Wood will throw 5 tonight in Vegas. The Reds lineup for the afternoon game which I should be able to do some PBP for:

Drew Stubbs 8
Chris Burke 5
Wladimir Balentien 7
Scott Rolen dh
Laynce Nix 9
Ramon Hernandez 2
Miguel Cairo 3
Paul Janish 6
Aaron Miles 4
Mike Leake 1

Leake- 5
Chapman- 2
Owings- 2

Interesting that the defense for Leake only features 2 regulars.

membengal

Yup. Altho I think Dusty was trying to use the Vegas trip as a gift to his vets, so that may be a reason as well.

medford
03-31-2010, 03:45 PM
I was thinking the other way, maybe Scott Rolen doesn't like the whole vegas thing, but I'd be annoyed to be left home while everyone else gets to go out an play. I'm guessing they're not going to judge him by stats alone, but by how he's throwing the ball.

Apparently the game tonight is on FSN. I was unaware.

medford
03-31-2010, 04:02 PM
Pitching coach will be at both games, presumably to better gauge each starting pitcher and make the final call on the 5th rotation spot. (1st part was mentioned on 700, second part was my assumption or perhaps he just wants to party in Vegas :)

Two up, two quick outs for the A's against Leake. A fly ball to LF and a ground out.

Now a ground out to 1b.

Three up three down for Leake and the Reds.

0-0 after 1.

I think Dusty had little say on who went on the Vegas trip as that game is a "marketing" event for MLB. I'm sure sending the veterans was highly encourage, if not directed.

Somebody asked about the lineup for the Vegas game tonight and while I can't find where I read this (I know I read it somewhere), I believe it's mostly the regular starters there aside from Rolen, Stubbs, and Hernandez who are playing in this game. I assume that means Hanigan is catching for Wood with Joey, Brandon, Orlando, and Francisco (maybe?) in the infield and Gomes, Dickerson, and Bruce in the outfield. Just my best guess though! :)

membengal
03-31-2010, 04:44 PM
Balentin falls behind 0-2, fouls some pitches off, works the count full, and then grounds out to SS.

One down, runner still on second. Rolen up.

Changes in slugging is one of the few things that has been shown to be predictive from ST to the regular season. Definitely a good sign.

Rolen ground out to 3b, Burke breaks for third as Rosales throws to 1b, and beats throw into third.

Two outs, Burke now on 3b.

Burke trying to impress someone.

membengal

Squeeze play on, weirdly, with two outs, Nix misses sign, Burke dead to rights at home.

1-0 Reds middle of 3.

membengal
03-31-2010, 04:47 PM
The above was all per Brantley, of course. I have no personal idea if Nix missed a sign or not, or if Burke is simply trying to run his way to Cincy.

At any rate, inning over.

Normally when I see the phrase "developing power" I assume it's a guy who supposedly can hit the deep ball but it never develops (like Dickerson). Hopefully Stubbs' stint in Cincy and this spring training is a sign that his power has actaully developed.

Unless Wood is lights out, how do you NOT give the 5th slot to Leake? I know the arguments for getting him some time in the minors to get accustomed to the 5 man rotation, but shouldn't we be putting the BEST pitcher available in that slot? Chapman is coming back from the back spasms, so he's out IMO. Wood, Leake, Malony & Lehr are the options. Can't see it NOT being Leake right now.
