Moments before that run scoring double, Chris Welsh shared with us how Cueto has great command of his fastball tonight. Apparently Chris Welsh is either

B. Watching highlights of a different pitcher.

Cueto throw 33 pitches, throwing 16 strikes and 17 balls....3 hits, 2 bb's and no K's and he has great COMMAND?

I wish the Reds would stop trying to steal. They get picked off and caught stealing and have consistently for many seasons now. Save the running game for the bottom of the order where the hitter isn't likely to drive anyone in anyway. Nobody should run when Votto, Gomes, Bruce or even Rolen are hitting. Might add Leake and Owings to that list.

Is Felipe Lopez really pitching for the Cardinals right now or is MLB gameday messed up?

Larussa really ran his pen out faster then necessary, at least 1 guy should be able to go more then an inning.

Cardinals outfielder Joe Mather is pitching the 19th inning.

Mets scored a run off of Mather. Mets bring in Rodriguez to nail it down. Promptly gives up a double to PooHoles & Molina knocks him in. Tie ball game 1-1. LOL

Pretty soon, LaRussa's going to have to pitch himself. :O)

Poor Dusty. Last year of the last managing contract he's likely going to get and he gets this team.

Wasn't watching the game but was Cueto as bad as his line? 100+ pitches in 5 innings? Why are all of these alleged great pitchers - Cordero included - afraid of throwing pitches for strikes? I heard Cordero was throwing 3-2 split fingered pitches in the dirt instead of challenging them. I honestly believe it's a philosophical thing with the Reds.

Yep...the Reds had 4 position players in the game with BA below .200. That, folks will keep you in the bottom of the division. Combine that with the dreadful pitching we've had lately and it's a recipe for disaster.

I don't believe they'll continue to play THIS bad but I sure hope Dusty and Walt aren't sitting on their hands just hoping things will get better. Nothing is working for this team right now.

I think that you're on to something there. Maybe the Reds need to change that philosophy?

I repeat. The pitching is simply mediocre or even less than mediocre. You can live with that, but this team is just anemic offensively. Instead of spending money for a good MLB level hitter to roan the otfield, we continue to take players off the trash bin -- players no one else wants -- and flounder on the offensive side.

And while I'm at it, it's time to push Jay Bruce back to the bench and play one of those guys who might hit. Sorry, but I do not see it--his "Cannot Miss" reputation. He misses almost at an alarming rate. Dickerson is simply another one of those players any championship team would rarely play and Gomes and Nix are players other teams rejected as done. On a team with a world class first baseman, second baseman and third baseman, our outfield, at least offensively, is junk. Our pitching staff is not all that, but better than average. The result is 5-7.

Yeah, it's early, but I've had it with keeping Cairo over Ballentein and watching an really not ready for prime time Cueto do his best Josh Fogg imitation more often than not. Time to spend some money boys or just quit.

No you can't live with THAT, it's what has made the team you've been railing against for a decade, it's such typical Reds fan mindthink to want offense over pitching. Well I don't want it at the expense of pitching.

Ballentine?

He couldn't fix what ails this team

Uhhhh... what he said.

The Reds had offense in the early and middle parts of this decade. Didn't get us anywhere.... the pitching staffs of those years were laughable. Know why its laughable? Because their not pitching with anyone else.

The reason the Red Sox and Yanks are annual WS contenders is the fact most of their Starting 5 would be aces on over half of other Major League teams.

I'll add overvaluing young players to that list.

The Reds actually only scored more than 750 runs in a season three times during the 2000's (they did score exactly 750 in '04 though) and only bested 800 twice (825 being the highest). This is with them calling a hitters park home for the better part of the decade...

And I shouldn't have been railing about this team? And I'm the only one?

And yes, pitching is very, very important, so so is offense. If a pitcher allows 3 runs (or a team, for that metter), you have to have a team that can score at least 4 to win. For the last few years, we haven't had that kind of team except on occasion, so if a staff allows 4 runs early, it's very difficult to win. AND, what has the GM done about this? Pieced together has-beens and never-wasses to fill the voids. Patterson, Taveras, Caberra, Gomes, Nix, and others have been brought in to do the job and the result was a big old failure. That's what I was talking about.
