This is inspired by the Joe Posnanski piece on his website this morning about Braves fans booing Ubaldo Jiminez.

I was curious if you have your own personal rules for booing.

Mine:
1) Never boo anyone who isn't being paid that day(and no scholarships don't count.) This allows you to boo all officials and professional teams(including SEC Football.)

2) Never boo players for poor management decisions. ie. Don't boo Miguel Cairo for striking out when he's batting 4th.

3) Never boo the home team just because the other team is better. If the Pacers are playing the Lakers don't act surprised when the Lakers are winning by 20.

In general if I'm at a game, I'll boo the opposing team when they show up. I'll boo my own team if there's no effort. But I know what I'm getting into when I buy a ticket. My team might win, it might lose, so long as everyone is doing their best to win, I'm not going to boo.

I'll boo the other team I dont do it a lot but I'll to it as razzing. I think its great part of the game and think is a great way for fans to inject a little.

I dont boo my home team unless something completely amazingly bad happens. You have to botch multiple pop flies or throw 3 or 4 picks in a game to get me to boo.

Never boo high school athletes. Ever.

Boo umpires, coach's decisions, referees, and opposing teams. (Even in college and especially if they show boat or flop.)

Boo lack of effort at all levels above high school.

Yea ill add you should never boo high school or lower. Unless you are in fact in high school then you can do it all you want.

I heard some kids chant "air ball" at a few high school girls games this year. Don't think I could get behind chanting "air ball" at a girls game no matter what age you are.

Yeah, I hear that one from time to time at high school games. Don't know if I would classify that under booing but I agree with your second sentence.

If I paid for a ticket, I reserve the right to boo whenever I deem appropriate. ;)

The other day, we had an interesting discussion in the dugout of my son's youth (9-12 YO) baseball team. We are a dreadful 0-4 to start the season and the only player hitting anything right now is one of our best 12 year olds.

Two of the opposing teams have elected to walk him intentionally; a decision which was met by a chorus of 'booooos' from the players in our dugout.

I, as well as the other coaches, have banned our players from booing the other team for the IBBs. Our advice: Get your sticks working and protect the poor kid so that it becomes a tougher decision on the opposing manager.

Meh if its coming from students I have zero problem with it. Let them have their fun with their peers.

true high school rivalries should be 50/50 cheers and boos at all times.

Most of the booing I hear at high school games is directed at referees and umpires, not the opponent.

Wow Intentional walks in a 9-12 year old baseball game. Who are the opposing coaches Vic Morrow?

I'm more surprised that 9-12 year olds are playing together in the same league. That's a pretty serious age gap!

The only time I boo is when a fat a** shoves his fingers down his throat and pukes on a little girl. Oh, and whenever Sidney Crosby touches the puck.

The only people I've ever booed at a sporting event are Barry Bonds and Richard Nixon.

I played against 12 year olds when I was 9, there were only a handful of us that did in our league.

I'm more surprised that 9-12 year olds are playing together in the same league. That's a pretty serious age gap!Our home park is governed by Cal Ripken baseball rules (as opposed to Little League Baseball) and that is how they structure their youth leagues. While all 14 kids practice together, the 9s/10s do not see much action with the "Majors" team--it is comprised almost exclusively of 11s/12s.

In a "Majors" game, the 9s/10s might be lucky to see the field as a pinch hitter, pinch/courtesy runner, or maybe enter the game as an outfielder. On the other hand, our 9s/10s will join with those from another team to form a separate "Junior Majors" team for the season. This level is really where the younger kids are allowed to develop properly.

The biggest differences are noticed not on the field, but in the dugout. Here, you have 4th-5th graders who are fresh out of coach-pitch "Rookie Ball" mixed with kids in Middle School.

In case you were curious, Pokemon cards do not blend well with the emergence of new facial hair.

I just know that when I was 12 some of the pitchers would have sent good 9 year olds back to the dugout in tears. I'm not sure there's a 9 year old alive who can put a good swing on a 65-70 mph fastball from 45 feet away. There aren't many 12 year olds who can.

Boo athletes at any level when they do things that lack class and don't boo when it shows a lack of class on your part.

I have one rule.

1. Boo "professionals" when they don't act professionally, and that means among many things such as, giving a good effort, acting responsibly and respecting the "home uniform". Wins and losses is never an issue.

My son played Little League majors division at 10 years old. He was my #2 pitcher and hit close to .500. We won the majors championship that year in our league. That particular year, our Little League here in South Charlotte was the 9th largest Little League in the World. The next year, the league made a rule that 10 year olds could no longer play in the majors division. I would have to agree that most kids at 9 or 10 cannot compete with the 12 year olds and tend to struggle. Funny thing is that I had another 10 year old that year that was my #3 pitcher and hit nearly as well as my son. Those two boys still play together on a travel team. Some kids need the challenge. Most have a hard time with it.

Within the realm of Cal Ripken baseball, kids who choose the "Majors" route as 9 YOs have to try out prior to being eligible as a draft pick.

This decision is not made because parents think their children can already compete on the level with the 11/12s. Usually, it is so that their children will be exposed to a better brand of coaching than what they would have otherwise received had their child elected to go through the "Minors" (placed on a team without having to tryout).

I cannot speak for other parks, but the success of our (10) Major teams are mostly driven by the 12s. The 11s are there as a support to the 12s. If the 10s play at all, you hope that they help you more than they hurt you. If a 9 YO is playing in the Majors, it means he is on a gawd awful team.

It's ok to boo Alphonso Soriano when he's slower running to 2nd base than Adam Dunn. If you saw Baseball Tonight last night, you know what I'm talking about.

Go ahead and boo any Cubs, for that matter.

Current Lakers and Current Steelers can always be booed under any scenario.
