Reds Lineup courtesy of Fay...

Drew Stubbs 8
Brandon Phillips 4
Joey Votto 3
Scott Rolen 5
Jay Bruce 9
Orlando Cabrera 6
Laynce Nix 7
Ryan Hanigan 2
Aaron Harang RHP

I think we’ve seen a changing of the catchers for now at least. Hanigan seems to be the three-day guy and Ramon Hernandez the two-day guy.

Big game day, as they say, difference between winning the series and losing the series, difference between being above or below .500, difference between a great road trip (5-1) and a good road trip (4-2).

The Reds face Chris Carpenter, no easy task. They need Harang to be good, like he was in his last start.

A win today and we're looking at a 5-1 ROAD trip. I'd take that. :O)

Heisey would have been a nice change today. Stubbs flashed some potential last season however those home runs have gone to his head. His swing is long.

Has Harang always pitched from the first base side of the rubber like that? I can't remember him being that far over before.

His swing is always long, he struck out a lot in the minors.

He needs to go back to AAA.

His swing is always long, he struck out a lot in the minors.

He needs to go back to AAA.

He had been choking up in the lower levels. Now even with two strikes on him he is generating some wind with that swing. Should call him the human wind turbine.

As far as Harang goes Nate it could be Price shifted Harang over to the side more. I am sure Harang is willing to try anything to salvage his career.

Bruce robbed of another hit.

Brutus
05-02-2010, 02:32 PM
There was an example of good scouting. Teams have been shifting their infielders against Bruce this year, knowing 95% of his groundballs go to the right of the second base bag. Sure enough, shading toward the middle, Brendan Ryan scoops up a ball going over the bag and throws out Bruce.

Bruce robbed of another hit.

Wasn't really robbed. Ryan was playing him about 4 steps from second base. It was a nice play, but Bruce's hit chart makes it pretty easy for opposing shortstops to shade almost dead middle on him.

Carpenter is in at 20 pitches over two innings. At this rate, he can go 10 innings. We had better hope Harang is good and the bullpen is exemplary if we want to win today. Just unbelievable.

Masset replaces Fisher

Jay singles. Fisher may need to get an Apartment guide for Louisville.
But I thought Carlos was cool? :p:

Actually, Nick's looking quite good so far.

Masset's still got really good stuff. Leading the majors in swing and miss percentage (35.5%).

I still think he'll get it together this season.

Don't call it quits yet guys. 2 innings left and we're in the St. Louis pen. Our chances have just improved greatly. But we've got to shut them down this inning right NOW.

Crud. Walked Ludwick.

Okay, now he's starting to look not so okay. Pound the zone Nick! Pound it!

This is two straight games the Reds have walked Ludwick to load the bases for Pujols, right?

Next time you might want to go after Ludwick.

Nick stuff is ridiculously good when he just throws it. When he tries to put extra stuff on it...he loses control in a bad way.

Trust your stuff Nick....it's that good.

Well this game was probably over before that but yeah, it's almost like the Reds still think this Pujols guy is in a career long hot streak, and is due to come out of it soon.

Harangs start looks great compared to what the bullpen just did in 1 inning.

I don't think I've ever seen a team walk the guy for Pujols to load the bases in back to back games before. I'd rather groove one down the middle to Ludwick than face Pujols.

Caveat Emperor
05-02-2010, 04:29 PM
Don't know why you ever pitch to Pujols with runners on. It's moronic. How many times does he have to beat you before you stop pitching to him? Walk a runner in, I don't care, just don't let the guy bat.

I don't care how good Matt Holliday is, you force HIM to beat you -- not the best hitter baseball has seen in over 50 years.

Still moving, but the intelligence of this staff must be just below Alfred E. Neuman.

Just sayin'...

Fisher needs to be in AA and Massett apparently was a one-year-wonder.
We got bullpen problems for sure. Poor Aaron Harang. He always faces their best pitcher and always loses. I'd demand a demotion to No.3 starter, refuse to pitch opening day, and punt.

Why would Fisher need to be in AA? He was pitching fine in AAA before getting promoted.

But I thought Carlos was cool? :p:

He is, but Lecure is pitching well and I'd like to see him take a stab at the Reds pen. I still think Carlos will hep this year but the inactivity means he needs to go back down and get in a groove. The Reds need to find help from someplace it wasn't counting on it, and I think Lecure might be the best place to look right now.

Carlos has pitched back to back now and probably won't be available tomorrow so it makes him a likely guy to go down.

4-2 road trip nothing to sneeze at. 5-1 would've been nice, but I'll take it.

Now let's head home and get it rollin' again.

Now let's head home and get it rollin' again.True about the road trip. The Cardinals are just the class of the Central and we didn't help any by making some very poor decisions yesterday. Today, not much mattered except Carpenter. When you don't score any runs, it really doesn't make any difference how good your pitching is.

I thought Harang was pretty much on today. He allowed the HR to Freese, but a quality start nonetheless. That's all you can ask. If he had faced 80% of the starters in the league, he probably would have led the Reds to a win, but as long as they continue to start him in the No. 1 position where he has to constantly face the league's best with this anemic offense, he will be a 15-17 loss pitcher every year. If I were Harang, i'd ask for a trade to anyone in the league who would realize he's a number 3 and not a 1, and pitch him accordingly in the rotation (of course, then who is your No. 1? A big question).

Now we play the red-hot Mets. The schedulers were not kind to us.

1. Harang pitched a pretty good game.

2. Carpenter pitched a better game.

3. The Reds offense aided and abetted in Carpenters well pitched game.

4. I believe the Reds could've and should've won yesterdays game.

5. I thought Fridays game was the most entertaing game so far this season but we were lucky the umps let the Reds bat in the top of the 6th inning before halting play.

Can once and for all there be an answer to the question "does being the #1 starter matter once the year gets going?" (vis a vis Harang/Carp)

I just can't imagine it does, but others disagree. I think it's luck of the draw for the most part.

Of course, i don't have any statistics, but it always seems that Harang comes up against Carpenter (twice this year), Zambrano (how many times last year?), and other team's No. 1's.

I thought this was interesting.

Since Dusty Baker took over the Reds, Pujols has pounded them to the tune of a .346 BA 13 HRs 36 RBI in 35 games.
