This lineup alone-- with Phillips back in cleanup and Cairo starting at the hot corner, along with Janish not playing for Cabrera-- should be enough to make this game thread much longer than last night's.

Happy Cinco De Mayo. It's a lefty, so it's a loss.

Neise is a lefty, so that explains the Phillips move.

But I think the Janish saga is getting weird. I wonder if something else is going on.

I know what he did last year but everytime he's gotten a chance to something this year, he seems to be taking advantage of it so why not give him at least one start a week? I guess I'm just sick of seeing OCab's lack of range and would like to see a real SS out there every once in a while. *sigh* :(

Yep. Strange lineup...but with a lefty, Phillips in the 4 hole doesn't bother me much. In fact, it shows that Dusty's paying attention to the numbers some. But then he takes that attention and loses it again with Cabrera & Cairo.

Brantley gets a lot of grief here, but he does know pitching. Cueto looked fantastic the first 2 innings, but he immediately noticed that Cueto was falling off towards 1st to start the 3rd inning. Cueto immediately started throwing the ball off the plate on the 3rd base side...just like Brantley said he would.

Cueto will never be anything more than #5 starter material until he refines his command -- and it sounds like THAT won't happen until he works out a delivery that he can repeat throughout a game.

The sad truth for Reds fans, though, is that these are the same issues that he's had since comnig up to the majors -- and Cueto's shown little to no improvement in that regard.

The Reds have some power arms but I'm amazed at the lack of confidence in the fastball. Cueto is throwing 95 mph and he opts for a 3-2 slider against Alex Cora... There is no good excuse for that with Reyes, Bay, and Wright to follow.

The Reds have a problem with both Homer and Cueto. One pitcher doesn't work fast and has confidence issues and the other pitcher can't replicate his mechanics pitch after pitch. With how bad this team is built it can't have Cueto and Bailey struggle all year.

OTOH, I think some folks are willing to give Janish too much credit for a good spring and some nice numbers in an extremely small sample size this year even when his entire minor and major league career screams NOODLE BAT!

Fair point. But when you've got a player with a hot bat...you play that player, right? Ride the hot bat. I'm sure by now it's cooled. Heck, it's probably put into deep freeze at this point. But I still think he's too easily dismissed. A solid spring and solid start could also be a sign of improvement...not just an aberration.

Even if the FA is a backup himself at this point in his career? A 50-50 split in starts would make some sense to me. OC's an aging player who could use the breaks to keep his legs fresher. PJ's is a player who needs some regular ab's to show what he's capable of.

Not if he was signed to be a starter and the back up is not a stud. Janish is a lateral move, just don't see it as a good organizational move this early in the season.

Plus I watched Janish play the second half of last year. It was painful.

Cabrera does a lot of things that don't show up in the raw stats. He's a good ball player, even if he isn't what he once was. I think he'll get better as the season goes on.

I agree with some of this. Janish DID struggle at the plate in the second half. But was that his true level? Or was he slumping? Pretty small sample size too.
