Not surprising at all.

I had to look him up. Still don't know that I know who he is other than a LB for the Texans.

So yeah, its not surprising to me, but mostly because I don't care who he is. No offense directed towards you mind you.

He was the defensive ROY last year lol.

He must have not been all that impressive for me not to remember him. :)

College All American. First Round Draft Pick (may have been the first LB taken, but I'm too lazy to look that up). Defensive ROY and selected to the Pro Bowl.

But I agree not a surprise at all.

Went to my rival HS (though there are a few years between us). Not a shocker in this neck of the woods by any stretch.

I'm surprised he hasn't been caught sooner.

That explains his "separation" last year between him and Maualuga. They should have more parallel years this season. He's not the "Patrick Willis" of the AFC.

Cushing was hounded by rumors of performance-enhancing drug use before he became a pro, but the Texans were undeterred. They said then they found no truth to those rumors in their draft preparations.

"I've passed every drug test out there and still have," Cushing said during his 2009 draft news conference. "I'm not that kind of guy."

Really?

USC has been rumored to have steroid issues for years. Supposedly it was rampant. Anyone remember the Ting brothers?

Steroid U is a frequent nickname.

um, steroids is rampant in the NFL, College, and even in High Schools. Does USC need to be singled out as the only culprit?

To say they're the only place where steroids flourish would be extremely naive. Anyone who has paid an ounce of attention to football should realize steroids are rampant and widespread.

I don't think USC is getting singled out. Cushing went to USC, and so the school gets implicated by association.

He always reminded me of that guy (Latimer?) from the movie "The Program".

Peter Cushing's son?

Stick with the Samoans.

Their DNA has a nastier warrior streak than any steroids can do for someone.

Maybe Cushing can join the MMA after he retires?

The MMA now is refusing to let him train with them.

Cushing was voted The Associated Press NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year at the end of the season -- part of the AP's annual awards honoring outstanding on-field performance by players. As a result of the penalty and admission, the AP is taking a revote for the defensive rookie award plus All-Pro outside linebacker. Cushing received five votes in that category and made the second team. He is still among the nominees in the revote.

I expect AP to revote on all sorts of stuff then, McGwire, Marion Jones, who gets the red popsicle and who gets the orange...

I think it's a timing thing here.

As it just occurred, it wouldn't be odd or anything to have it revoked.

I don't know that I agree with a re-vote on it, but I do think it is a lot easier to justify under Cushing's circumstances because he tested positive for steroids in September which means he played the rest of the year after having tested positive. The real question is why wasn't he suspended sooner? I don't think the vote would've turned out the same with the knowledge that he tested positive, so it really does make sense that some would want a re-vote IMO.

More along the lines of rewriting trivia.

What Cushing said, "I have no idea where the positive test came from."

What Cushing meant, "I have no idea how I messed up this steroid cycle. I have been doing this for years".

From Rotoworld w/ Rotoworld comments:

One NFL GM tells Thomas George of AOL Fanhouse that suspended LB Brian Cushing's steroids use dates back to high school.

"We did our research on him before the draft last year and we concluded he was a chronic steroid user dating back to high school," said the unnamed general manager. "More than a few people were surprised when he passed the steroid tests at the Combine. I think the guy became a pro at masking it, until he was caught. I definitely would have taken my vote back on (the Defensive Rookie of the Year) award if I had one."
