So relieved to see no Cairo in there today. I really thought there was an 80% chance Cairo would be starting for Rolen. I would really like to see Valaika up here in Cairo's spot to give Phillips one day off every week and to spell Rolen. God knows Rolen needs days off with his back, but I just hate to see Cairo in there.

Tomorrow is an off day so Rolen will still get some rest. Scott and Joey both hit very well off Duke (and they didn't play the last time the Reds faced him) so it probably made Dusty very happy that he could write their names on the lineup card this time, LOL ;)

Time for the brooms guys....let's get the sweep! :D

I would have like to see Heisey get another start, back to back starts if you will. Who I would sit, I'm not sure, but I would have liked to have seen it.

Anyhoo, latest radar seems to indicate that rain will be arriving in Pittsburgh around 4:00, so they should be able to get this in unless it goes extra innings. Still it wouldn't hurt Homer to take a cue from Leake and Cueto and throw strikes, working quickly.

Maybe I'm reading too much into it, but I think Dusty really, really wants a sweep here. I was 100% sure Rolen was getting the day off today, but he isn't...kudos for keeping him in there.

I also wouldn't have minded if Heisey got another start today, but not upset he isn't either. Let's break out the brooms today!

Oh and random question for y'all: It's about 35 degrees here in Denver and Halladay is on the mound for the Phillies about 1 mile from my house when they take the field in about 90 mins. He's from here and it's his first start ever in his hometown. Do I go and brave the rain/snow/cold or stay home all warm and cozy?

HeatherC1212

SirFelix-I'd grab a blanket/snuggie/coat...whatever you prefer...and head out to that game today if I were you. Halladay is an incredible pitcher and I love watching him work in games provided he's not pitching against the Reds at the time. ;)

Seven pitches that inning. Thankfully, it's difficult right now to hit the ball out of PNC, and Red pitchers are therefore being aggressive. I'd love to see that aggressiveness become contagious throughout the season.

Seriously, if your a Pirates announcer, and playing to the Pirate fan base, what more do you have to talk about? Its been 19 seasons since a winning season, and frankly their immediate future doesn't look all that much brighter either. I'm sure they would have been plenty happy to have the showboating Barry Bonds thru the 2000s rather than seeing him in San Fran.

And while I type, Stubbs shows up the Pirates by running quickly around the bases to score another run. What a jerk I tell ya.

I have absolutely nothing against Ramon Hernandez and am actually glad they brought him back as he's a good mentor, but I still can't understand what it's going to take for Hanigan to win the job. Good hitter that gets on base a ton, excellent catcher, throws base runners out and calls a great game. What's not to like about him?

Don't look now, but last night's offensive explosion put the starting eight above average in terms of OPS.

And that includes Drew Stubbs' 50 OPS+.

The difference between this year and last? Fewer offensive black holes. At this time last season, EdE, AGon, and Hernandez were all struggling, with Taveras soon to swoon in a major way. This season, the only position that's really struggling is CF.

Good news is that CF should improve (if only because Dickerson can't be as bad as he's been, and Heisey may steal some PT if he continues to hit), as should Phillips (a little) and Gomes (based on last year and continued intelligent usage).

Bad news is that Votto, Hernandez, and Rolen are all due at least slight payback.

so...I'm absolutely positive that the second I post this, I'm going to jinx everything, but I am starting to believe I have a magical onion in my possession.

Saturday I was at my friend's house and he said, yo vp, take a look at this. He had just opened the garbage can at noticed right at the top, amongst the throwaways from the grill trimmings, a particular slice of onion. He showed it to me an I squealed, because this onion is quite freakishly the shape of a Reds C. I said I was going to put it on ebay and took it home. Didn't think much of it in any kind of superstitious sense, especially given the 14-7 drubbing the Reds had just suffered the day before.

Dang team hasn't lost a game since. Do I have a magical onion slice? I think maybe I do. (My friend is so upset with himself. He is a Pirates fan.)

Obviously the Reds have to lose at some point, so I am trying to assign another deeper meaning to the onion. Maybe the Reds won't lose to the pirates again this year? Or maybe ever?

Hernandez has played well so far this season. His OPS+ is 106, which is excellent for a catcher. He's playing well defensively for the most part, and, most importantly, he's a familiar voice for the Reds' Spanish-speaking contingent of hurlers.

He keeps Hanigan rested and vice versa.

Baker has really brought Hanigan in way more than I though he would. He's playing about half the games right now, catching Arroyo, Bailey, and some of Harang. Best of all, it's working. Really, really well. Why mess with success?

But this is why I really would like to see Hanigan as the primary catcher (nearing 60 plate appearances now)...

.396 BA
2 HR & 16 RBI
.508 OBP
.625 SLG (.229 ISO)
10 BB & 5 K

Oh, and he's thrown out 46% of the baserunners that have attempted to steal on him.

I'd be very surprised if this game hit two hours. Unless the Reds pile on Hanrahan here, which it looks like they may yet do.

Stubbs checks his swing, but they say he went around for the K. 5-0 Reds heading to the bottom of the 8th.

Just curiously Vaticanplum, did you cut the side of the Onion to make it a "C" or was it just like that when you found it?

No, it totally appeared like that in the garbage can! I'm just happy my friend recognized it!
