Is it bad that the seasons of the 2000's still have put me in doubt about being in first. I think about 2002 when we were like in first and like 12 games over at one point. Then I think about 2006 when we spent much of the year in first only to faulter in the second half of the year. I even think to last year when we were 6 over and swept the D-Backs to tie for first. With that said...................

I really feel there is something different about this team. (Yes I know the old chiche) We have great defense, timely hitting so far in the month of May and a roster of players that seem to CLICK. If nothing else I think we have a fun summer ahead of us!
GO REDS!

Is this what it's like to root for a good team? It's been so long I can't remember! Hope they keep it up tomorrow since I'm finally getting a chance to head down to the ballpark for my first game of the year.

They are absolutely rollin. Starting rotation is outstanding. Offense has come alive. Best defense in the league. It feels great.

They have been playing some pretty good ball lately. Pitching has been lights out for about 8 games.

Since they gave up 14 runs to the cubs they have had a team ERA of 1.83 not counting todays game.

Averaging 7 k/9 and only 1.7 bb/9

Absolutely crazy stats for a 7 game 63 inning stretch.

yeap, and Alonso is heating up in AAA, Maybe if we need something we could trade him to put us over the top

Reds have gone 11 straight games without committing an error. It's their longest streak since 1997 when they went 13 straight errorless games.

I am just as impressed with the defense as I am with the pitching. And obviously the defense is really helping the pitching.

Exactly 3 weeks ago, we were 7-11, including the indignity of getting swept by the lowly Pirates.

Since then, we're 14-5, and have landed in first place by doing our own dirty work and winning a series against the vaunted Cards.

I dig it.

And while I'll enjoy it while it lasts, I'd really love to see this roll continue for the next two weeks... 14 straight games against sub-.500 teams is time to get fat and happy before we head back to St. Louis on Memorial Day. I'd take a 4-3 week (against MIL, ATL, and CLE), and then we will follow that with a 7-game homestand where EVERY game should be winnable (against PIT and HOU).

It's fun being on top. Now, let's get stick around and make ourselves at home...

Most excited about the Reds I've been in a LONG time. After the first game of this series I would have swore we would fold and would have been lucky to salvage one game. Now, lets see how we handle prosperity. We need to continue to get pitching like we have been, the starters finally showing up turned the year around.

30-21 would be nice. That would be winning 9 of 14 during the stretch. :beerme:

Hats off to the situational hitting and GREAT defense. Votto turning 2 on a bunt attempt. Those are the small things that will keep your team winning.

Has Bryan Price had any impact in this?

Shocked, but it's great. Guess I'll have to ease up on Dusty for time being. But he's still a moron, could have a 5 game lead by now.

i think that would be hard to judge, who knows what he's been doing with the pitchers.

Interesting note about the Reds. They are one of only two teams in the majors with a winning record and a negative run differential. Reds are 21-16 with a -1 run differential, Nationals are 20-18 and are -14.

Just thought that was interesting.

If he hasn't had an impact then they should fire him, because he's not needed.

Absolutely he's had an impact in this.

Bryan Price (born June 22, 1962, in San Francisco, California) was a Minor League Baseball pitcher and is a Major League Baseball pitching coach. He is currently the pitching coach for the Cincinnati Reds. Along with English, Price speaks Spanish, to help communicate with Latino players.

Seattle Mariners
He was the Seattle Mariners' pitching coach from 2001-2006. Price earned USA Today Baseball Weekly's Pitching Coach of the Year Award after leading that staff to the American League ERA title with a 3.54 mark, an improvement of almost one run per game from the previous season.

Arizona Diamondbacks
He was the Arizona Diamondbacks pitching coach until May 7, 2009 when he resigned after manager Bob Melvin was replaced by A.J. Hinch. Price was named Major League Coach of the Year by Baseball America in 2007 after his D-backs staff posted a 4.13 ERA, fourth best in the National League, on the way to the National League Championship Series.

You really think managerial decisions can make a 4-5 game difference just 37 games into a season? Dusty is faaaaaar from perfect, but even if he was he is not that much of a determining factor of this team's success.

A new Pitching Coach can make a difference.

Since the turnaround is directly related to the turnaround of our Starters, there's definitely credit that should be given to Bryan Price. Overall, it goes to the whole team, of course, but specifically the Starters and the Pitching Coach should get a lot of the credit.

One of the things about this team that I really, really like is the overall athletic ability. Everyone in the lineup from 2-7 is capable of 20+ HRs and outside of Gomes and Rolen, everyone 1-7 can steal a base.

If these guys could improve their control of the stike zone, they could really be scary. Right now they strike out too much. Even Votto is on a pace for 160 this year. What's up with that?

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this the first time the pythag projects the Reds as the first place team?

This is the first time all season I've actually felt that the Cards won't take the division. This Cards team just has too many holes and are throwing the great production they get out of their stars away by giving so much playing time to awful players. I'm sure it'll be a battle to the end I just don't like the team as currently constructed. Bleh.
