View Full Version : "Live Topic" feature just added by Boss

If you're something unusual when you look at the topic board now, it looks like Boss just added a great new vBulletin feature called "Live Topic".

What this does, is if there has been a post in a thread within the past 5 minutes, the topic is considered "Live". If you viewing that thread and it's "Live" and somebody posts something while you are reading it, you don't have to refresh. It will automatically refresh without you losing your spot and show the new post... It will give you a warning in the thread at the bottom of the screen that a new post has been submitted.

Should really, really benefit the Game Threads the most...

Excellent. This will add ten years to my F5 key's life.

REDblooded did a good job of explaining the addon but I have it set to only display a topic as "Live" if it's been responded to within the past three minutes and not the default of five.

I like the addition, Boss.

Not working in tORG game thread tonight. I'm not the only one it's not working with, so it's gotta be the feature itself.

Thanks for letting me know - it should be working now. This addon is incompatible with the video addon we use to embed YouTube videos in posts so one will have to go (unless I can find a replacement for the latter). For now, I've disabled that addon.

Works Boss, Thanks!

I believe I've found a replacement video addon that is compatible with the Live Topic addon. I will be installing it ASAP.

Just saw it work.

That was kind of cool how it "faded" in with the new post.

This really works great with the game thread.

It's still not working for me :( Is there something I need to do to activate it?

I've actually got a little msg in the bottom left corner of my screen notifying me when one of these threads update.Pretty cool.

I also really like the Live Topic feature. I saw during the game thread that you seemed to be tweeking things some still. Once it settles down you might want to post the basic info on it...some seemed pretty confused by it's workings during the game thread tonight.

Just caught this new feature in today's game thread. I like it.

Perhaps I'm nuts, but it appears as though if I try to catch up on a game thread, I see the most recent few posts even as I'm cycling through the older posts. This can be confusing.

I'd basically see the last two posts on a topic at the bottom of page 5,6,7 as I'm going through with no warning that I noticed.

How do we turn off this feature? It's a pain in the butt when you're typing. When you're typing it shoves what you're typing below the screen and you can't see what you're typing.

I like it otherwise, but for "active" game-threads, it's a pain.

Boss-Hog

It can not be turned off for individuals; it's a global feature.

Just as a question, it's seems (for me) that if I'm following (for instance) a game thread in the Sun Deck, the live topic system works. However, if I'm following a game thread in the Old Red Guard, it doesn't work. Is the system contigent on one's ability to post in that particular thread?

Thanks.

Ed

No, it shouldn't be. FWIW, it's working in tORG for me.

Hmm... interesting. When I load a thread in the Sun Deck, I can see it continually firing the AJAX event to check for new posts. However, any thread I load in ORG does not fire any AJAX events after loading the page.

Okay just to ask the question again, As I was trying to catch up on the game in progress on the game thread, I read the first page no problem, on the second page, I got post #50, then post #81. I realize that this is partially because post #50 was at the bottom of the page, and then it showed the two most recent posts. There are obvious advantages to it, but I wish there could be a better warning that the posts are out of order. It was frustrating for me because I like to read through a game thread to give me a feel for the game. I basically missed any excitement in the Reds getting the lead because just as Arroyo was getting himself into trouble(post #50) I see the Reds are leading 5-1 in the 5th.

Maybe I'm the only one annoyed by this.

You're not the only one.

I'm not a big fan of this either.
I really don't like the new posts showing up on the current page and out of order.
I just left the game thread.. If you are on post #30 and then all the sudden post #82 shows up, it's annoying. Then when you catch up, you get to read post 82 again.

If the live updates only happened on the last page (ie no out of order posts), it would be a great feature. just my opinion.. although I can deal with it as it is.

How are you jumping from 50 to 81? I've never had it do that to me.

Let's say the thread is 4 pages long. You are on page 2. Someone adds a post that should be appended to the end of page 4. It will show up at the end of page 2 with the "live" update, so you end up seeing posts out of order.

Danny Serafini

That's weird, it always adds it on to the end where it belongs for me.

Well actually I just noticed where it is appearing and maybe this is something that could be tweaked.
It's always at the end of whatever page I'm reading, but above the link which allows you to go to the next page. It's also not a "post" in the same sense that it has a fixed position, but rather a message showing you what has been posted since you joined the thread.

This would be fine if you could make sure it only appears below the links to move forward in the thread. This way you could choose to see what has been written most recently or you could click to continue reading through the thread.
