Dusty knows he has a great weapon the bench in Heisey. He'll bring him out when he needs to spark something in the Reds. That's my theory anyway, LOL :p:

I guess bad Kyle showed up for the Cards today. Hehehehe

Still no Heisey?

3 starts since his callup on April 30th

Janish...3 starts at short since April 5th (and 3 at third)

The difference...Heisey's getting ph opportunities and late inning defensive replacement opportunities. At this point, I think we need to send Janish to Louisville or look to trade him. It's become quite clear that Dusty is NOT going to play him.

Who should he play over? Janish deserves to take no time away from Rolen, Cabrera, or Phillips. Should he play over Cairo, yes, but that would have given him only another couple starts.

Paul Janish is never going to be an everyday player. Might as well get him used to his role now.

I'm all for riding the hot bat. I just don't understand keeping a guy on the roster and refusing to use him at all. We're playing basically 2 men short compared to the opposition. Janish & Cairo. Despite all the wrath he got, I was glad to see Cairo get that recent start. Not because I like him, but if he's on the roster he SHOULD get a start every once in a while. Of course I'd rather he NOT be on the roster.

Same holds for Owings & Fisher on the pitching side of things. If you're not going to use them, get someone Dusty WILL use.

I'm not saying he should start over anyone. But the occasional start, the occasional ph chance, the regular defensive replacement shot. It's the refusal to put him in for 7th, 8th & 9th inning defensive purposes that just boggles my mind.

I think you're misunderstanding me. I WANT the best players to play. But if Dusty's not going to use Janish...then he's leaving our bench short a player. If you're not going to use him, send him down and bring up someone who WILL get some use...as a pinch hitter or another reliever or something.

And you can't tell me that Rolen & OCab don't both need the occasional day off at their ages. 1 start a week for OCab at short. 1 start a week for Rolen at third for Cairo or whoever. The collapse game vs Atlanta is the one that stunned me. With that big lead we had early on...why not get Ocab some needed rest? Why not bring in the better glove to protect that big lead? Just sayin'.

No.

Cairo booted a DP ball in the 9th, while playing for Rolen.

Yes, I know. Errors happen. But during that game thread, many were complaining why we didn't bring in Janish or Rolen as a defensive sub for Cairo. Well, my thinking on the matter is simple. Cairo got the start because Dusty wanted to give Cairo some playing time. He also wanted to give Rolen the day off. You don't yank Cairo for Rolen in that situation. Cairo was going to stay in there simply because it was his rare turn for a start. Ocab though...we'd already knocked in a bunch of runs early and he hasn't gotten a day off in quite some time (3 days off all season thus far). I thought it made sense to bring in Janish for Cabrera back in the 4th inning or so.

Does anyone know why Fox is starting the game at 7 tonight instead of 4?

Yeah but Davey never started to bat higher than 6th until the BRM became the Mini BRM after 1978.

I only see OBP when the leadoff hitter is concerned. IF Ricky Henderson's and Eddie Yost's were falling off trees...then by all means, grab one. Power is a plus for sure at 1-2 posts but doubles power will do.

You really should go to the MLB site and look at his spray charts the last two years. He actually absolutely does not spray the ball very much. Over 90% of the balls hit in or through the infield are on the right side. The balls he hits to left field are generally lazy flyballs.

I know he hasn't. But I'm saying he can. In fact he's best at the dish when he's doing that. Same for Phillips. Throwing the shift on just makes those hitters make a conscience effort to do just that. Not to mention the fact that Jay's perfectly capable of bunting too. That type of shift just begs for a bunt down the line.

Every major leaguer can. But when the percentages say you do something 90% of the time, why wouldn't you adjust your defense to accommodate that?

Just because someone can do something doesn't mean he's likely to. Paul Janish could hit a home run, but you wouldn't play your outfielders on the track expecting the possibility.

I have absolutely no idea. I just think he would have at least adequate center field range and a plus center field arm. I understand the angles are different, but I really think Nix and Gomes both deserve PT and Bruce should be in there every day. I just don't see another way to get all three guys in the game at once.

I guess you can play Nix in center, but I don't know if he has the range Bruce does.

I guess. But I would just hate to see Nix's bat on the bench when it is so hot right now. I definately wouldn't complain if Dusty keeps on running either Heisey or Stubbs in center, but it might be interesting to see an outfield of Gomes-Bruce-Nix out there. I guess that would be below average defensively, but with the way Nix is hitting right now, it would be good enough to off-set the defense offensively.
