A little information going into todays game....

Reds going for the 1st ever sweep of Cleveland on the road.

Reds have won 4 in a row against Cleveland and 12 of 15.

Reds win puts them 8 over .500, 1st time since June 30th 2006

Reds have won 18 out of their last 25

Starters improved to 10-1 with a 2.56 ERA in the last 14 games

Bailey has surrendered two runs over 16 innings in his past two starts after giving up 14 runs in his previous three, spanning 16 2-3 innings.

Homer is 2-0 with a 6.91 ERA in three starts against the Indians, failing to pitch more than five innings in any outing.

In two starts against the Reds last season, Huff was tagged for 13 runs and 16 hits in eight innings.

Joey Votto(notes) is 3 for 4 with a pair of homers against Huff while Ramon Hernandez(notes) is 4 for 5 with a home run

This is my favorite line-up of the season so far. Against a RH, I'd move Rolen to 2nd, Bruce to 4th and Phillips to 6th.

Gomes power in the middle of the order really makes a lot of other things fit better. Makes me wish we had the DH in the NL (biting my tongue as I type that).

Indians lineup today:

1 T. Crowe CF

3 T. Hafner DH
4 Jh. Peralta 3B
5 R. Branyan 1B
6 S. Duncan LF
7 L. Valbuena 2B
8 J. Donald SS
9 L. Marson C

The Reds play 10 more days in a row before an off day. They could use another pitcher short-term.

“Yeah, but who’s going to be sent out,” Baker said. “Who deserves to be sent out? I came under much scrutiny when I sent (Mike) Lincoln out there. But I knew I was going to be in this situation where we’re upside down.

How about a HITTER! You're not using Cairo or Janish...send one down and bring up an arm you doofus! (And I LIKE Baker *grin*)

Day game after a night game almost always means a catching change.

And a sample size a a few AB's isn't likely meaningful.

IIRC, Huff was the pitcher at the game I went to in Cleveland last season where the Reds beat him up for like six or seven runs in about five innings and ended up winning the game 7-1 (Micah was the winning pitcher). Let's hope they beat him up again! :D

Home plate ump is Jeff Nelson. Nelson this year has given out 8.8 walks per game (http://www.vegasinsider.com/mlb/stats/umpire-report/), sixth highest of any ump. I agree that he is being squeezed so far.

Disagree. When the ump won't give you the inside edge, outside edge, low in the zone or high in the zone...Homer has to adjust and still throw strikes. He may have missed his spot, but that spot has gotten a LOT smaller after seeing what the ump's calling.

RedsManRick

05-23-2010, 01:44 PM
Homer takes an inning to get rolling. The second he's usually facing bottom of the order, by the third he's in his groove if he's going to find it. Lots of pitchers in baseball history had first inning woes. Coming out and mowing down the other team's best guys right out of the gate is one of the hardest things about starting. If Tom Seaver's career was made up of just the first innings, he wouldn't sniff the hall of fame.

If Homer struggles in the third when the top of the order comes back around, then its time to worry IMO.

_Sir_Charles_

He's on Homer's schedule, so todays start might have a bearing on who gets the call. If he gets pulled early it may be an indication. Remember, he was VERY close to winning the job out of ST.
