... another Arthur Rhodes type pen pitcher. Right now we're looking pretty damn solid if not for the pen. Middle relievers are pretty cheap in the trade market as well, its just finding the right ones (cough not Bill Majewski cough) to get the job done. A healthy Dickerson to relieve Stubbs would be good as well.

All we need now is another relief pitcher who's pitching better than anyone in the Majors? That person doesn't exist, since Rhodes is already the best this season. We'll have to settle for someone who isn't as good as Rhodes.

But, they may already be on the roster. Time and experience may prove this out (or not). Anyway, no need to do anything in the next 30 days, for sure. Must wait to see how these relievers respond in June first.

Cueto and Leake are emerging, but I still believe we need a true #1 starter if we make the postseason.

Other than that, I have no complaints about the offense, and feel we need to bolster the bullpen. The same things I've been saying for 2 weeks now.

Sure would be nice if this missing piece came from within. But, Burton from the little I've come across, seems to be a bit mysterious. Bray, has had stretches of being absolutely "the one", but he has never stayed healthy. It would be nice, if sometime soon he gets there. Before he went down a lot of pundits were referring to him as potentially one of the best LH relievers in the NL.

I mean I can handle Nix but I'd like to get a guy who can do more than just swing really hard. Nix is defendable to a point but guys like Danny Dorn probably are going to be better fits. Hopefully he gets off the DL soon and pushes his way onto the roster.

Obviously you have to look to trade with teams pretty much out of the race, who are looking for prospects to rebuild. Guys I would target:

Chris Perez, Indians - 1.96 e.r.a. Does walk alot of batters though. Opponents batting .211 against him.

Joakim Soria, Royals - 2.84 e.r.a. Batters hitting .217 against him. 25 K's in 19 IP.

Sergio Santos, White Sox - 0.48 e.r.a. in 18 IP with 23 K's. Batting .182 against him.

J.J. Putz, White Sox - 3.38 e.r.a. Opposing hitters batting .203 against him. 22 K's in 16 IP.

Matt Thornton, White Sox - 1.59 e.r.a. Hitters batting .145 against him. 32 K's in 22 IP pitched with only 11 hits given up.

Shawn Kelley, Mariners - 2.25 e.r.a. Hitter batting .230 against him. 21 K's in 20 IP.

David Aardsma, Mariners - last year allowed only 49 hits in 71 IP. Hitters batted .190 against him last season and are batting .211 against him this year, although his e.r.a. is 4.41 right now, while striking out 18 batters in 16 IP. Has only allowed 12 hits this year.

Clay Hensley, Marlins - Marlins are always looking for top prospects, so they might be willing to trade. Hensley has .130 e.r.a with hitters batting .188 against him. In 27 IP he's allowed only 18 hits while striking out 35. Only 9 walks allowed.

Leo Nunez, Marlins - 2.08 e.r.a., .171 hitting against him. 21 IP, 13 hits, 5 walks, 23 K's.

Evan Meek, Pirates - 0.92 e.r.a., .198 hitting against him. 29 IP, 21 hits, 7 walks, 30 K's. Career .210 BAA and 3.12 e.r.a. over 3 major league seasons.

I would love to grab 2 of those 3 relievers from the White Sox for some of our prospects.

Agreed, Lincoln seemed like he might actually be turning out to be good this year, but his last 5 appearances have shown his true colors. I wouldn't have minded keeping Del Rosario up and sending Lincoln(dunno if we can option him or just stuck DFA) or Fischer down.

Santos is young and still making the league minimum, so I doubt you can pry him away from the Sox, atleast for a reasonable offer. Thornton has been having a bit of arm trouble recently so I would not offer much for him. Putz would definately be a nice pick up though, and possibly not without having to pay too much for him in prospects.

Evan Meek might be a good target to go for, I don't know if he is going to arbitration or not after this year, but the Pirates probably won't want to pay him, so it shouldn't take much to get him if he is in line for arbitration this year.

Vottomatic
05-31-2010, 08:49 PM
According to Cot's Baseball Contracts, Meek isn't eligible for arbitration until 2012.

Putz is making $3M this year but is a FA next year, which means the Sox might want to get something for him.
Thornton is making $2.25M this year with an option for next year or a buyout of $225,000.
Santos is a long way from arbitration and is making the league minimum. White Sox payroll is at $103M.

But Alonso is making $1M this year. If we obtained Putz and Thornton for $5.25M and packaged Alonso, it makes the added cost $4.25, or whatever is remaining for the season. Konerko is a FA after the season and probably won't be re-signed by the Sox, so they will be looking for a top 1B prospect.

Vottomatic
05-31-2010, 08:57 PM
Nunez is making $2M this year and up for his second arbitration next season.
Hensley is making the minimum but up for arbitration next season.

Aardsma is making $2.75M this season (more than KGJ) and is up for arbitration 2 next season. Shawn Kelley isn't eligible for arbitration til 2012.

Soria is making $3M this year and $4M next season.

You gotta remember that we're done with Harang and Arroyo's contracts after this season, saving roughly $21M after their $2M contract buyouts. So taking on some bullpen payroll really shouldn't be a problem in my opinion.

All we need now is a bullpen to go with rhodes, cordero, and herrera. Nick Masset needs to get himself straightened out, Burton should be on the way to St.Louis right now. Reineke in Louisville is pitching pretty well he maybe another option. Lincoln needs to be designated for assignment, Fisher needs to go back to AAA.

Hard luck strikes Dorn again. 2 years ago early on, as he was about to be promoted to AAA he gashes his leg and misses a big chunk of time. Now when his bat would have been a great fit.........broken hand.
