The revamping of the Reds minor league system including development of players is an amazing story.

Votto (drafted by the Reds in 2002), Bruce (2005), Cueto (2004), Leake (2009), Heisey (2006), Stubbs (2006), Bailey (2004), Dickerson (2003), Rosario (2005), Ryan Hanigan (2002), Paul Janish (2004)

...also drafted by the Reds: Logan Andrusek (2005), Carlos Fisher (2005), Juan Francisco (2004), Sam LeCure (2005), Travis Wood (2005), Todd Frazier (2007), Zach Cozart (2007), Chris Valaika (2006), Yonder Alonso (2008), Pedro Viola (2005), Danny Dorn (2006), Dave Sappelt (2008), Matt Klinker (2007), Scott Carroll (2007), Mesoraco (2007)

Some of the trades pulled off are even more amazing.

Brandon Phillips was drafted in 1999 by the Montreal Expos and then traded in 2002 along with Cliff Lee, Grady Sizemore to the Indians for Bartolo Colon and Jeff Stevens. Then Phillips was traded to the Reds in April of 2006 for Jeff Stevens (peanuts). Stevens has 14 career major league games he's pitched in for the Cubs in 2009 and this season with a career e.r.a. of 5.14.

Bronson Arroyo was acquired in March of 2006 in a trade with the Red Sox for Willy Mo Pena, who is currently out of baseball. We all know what Bronson has meant to this team averaging over 200 innings every year he's been with The Reds.

Aaron Harang acquired in a trade with Oakland in 2003 with 2 other minor leaguers who went nowhere for Jose Guillen. Guillen was to be a free agent at the end of the season.

Rolen acquired on July 31, 2009 for Edwin Encarnacion, Zach Stewart, and Josh Roenicke to the Blue Jays. The Reds are 55-27 in games he's played since he was acquired. Stewart is currently in double AA, having started 9 games with a 6.02 e.r.a. Roenicke has pitched in 12 games this year for Toronto with a 4.97 e.r.a. EE is currently batting .242 with 7 HR's for the Jays. Rolen is probably the Reds MVP to date.

Drew Sutton was acquired in a trade in April of 2009 with the Astros for Jeff Keppinger. We just had no place for Keppinger to play anymore.

Micah Owings was acquired in a trade in 2008 for Adam Dunn. Dunn was to be a free agent the next season and the Reds were just trying to get something for him. Not bad.

Danny Herrera was acquired in the trade with the Rangers that sent them Josh Hamilton for Edison Volquez back in 2007.

Edison Volquez acquired in that same trade with the Rangers for Josh Hamilton.

Nick Masset was acquired in 2008 in a trade with the White Sox for Ken Griffey Jr. KGJ was to be a free agent after the season. Not bad for dumping a player.

Matt Maloney was acquired in 2007 in a trade that sent Kyle Lohse to the Phillies.

Ramon Hernandez was acquired in a December 2008 trade with the Orioles for Brandon Waring, Ryan Freel, and Justin Turner. Waring is currently batting .229 in double AA for Baltimore. Freel is retired. Turner barely made it to the big leagues, having 9 at-bats this season without a hit. Baltimore demoted him but he was claimed on waivers by the Mets and is currently in their minor league system. He's primarily a second baseman and considered a utility type player. Pretty good acquisition considering he pairs with Hanigan at catcher. I think we have the best catching tandem in the major leagues.

Bill Bray was acquired in July of 2006 in the trade with the Nationals that sent them Austin Kearns, Felipe Lopez, and Ryan Wagner. Bray underwent Tommy John Surgery in 2009 and is preparing to make a comeback.

Signed as free agents: Cordero, Rhodes, Cabrera, Gomes, Nix, Cairo

Signed internationally: Aroldis Chapman (2010)

Rule 5 acquisition: Jared Burton from the Oakland Athletics in 2006.

Pretty much how the current team was built.
