Jonny Gomes does not sit in a recliner in the clubhouse; he reclines on a bed of nails.

Could anyone have predicted that he'd do this well? He's a huge reason for us being in first place.
I gotta admit I was in the camp that could take or leave him before the season started. But I love the guy.

My favorite is the story about how he suffered through a heart attack for 27 hrs before finally going to the hospital. Scary? Sure, on one level, but on another level (the Mike Gundy "I'm a man! I'm 40!" level), completely awesome.

he wears my number from highschool. And has my play style. very happy to see him doing well. If he can continue to show patience at the plate. (Unlike bruce) Gomes should be an all-star

If he can continue to show patience at the plate. (Unlike bruce) Gomes should be an all-star
Gomes K rate - 24.8%
Gomes BB rate - 9.1%
Bruce K rate - 22.2%
Bruce BB rate - 12.7%
Bruce is WAY more patient at the plate than Jonny.
Just further illustrate...
Month of May:
Bruce...
Had a .387 OBP against a .270 BA...
A .117 differential. He had 18 BB's equating to a 15.3% walk rate with a K rate of 23.7%...
Gomes...
Had a Votto like .420 OBP against a Ted Williams like .364 BA...
A .056 differential. He had 10 BB's equating to a nice 10.2% walk rate with a K rate of 24.9%... But well short of Bruce.
So the reality is Bruce is way way more patient at the plate this side of anyone named Hanigan or Votto than anyone on the Reds. He can sustain those numbers month in and month out.
Gomes is not capable of hitting .364 month after month.
Had Bruce had the same kind of month Gomes just had His OBP would have came close to .487 for the month and his SLG % would have been .620 or a 1.107 OPS vs 1.056 for Gomes.

Is there any easier job in professional sports than being the first base coach? Someone reaches first you just smack 'em on the rear and tell them 'attaboy'. Oh yeah, remind them of how many outs there are. Every once in awhile, if he has indigestion, a first base coach can argue a bang-bang play at first. And if a guy gets thrown out at second trying to stretch a single into a double you never hear anyone complain about the first base coach not knowing what is going on. Does he even have a say in that? Does the first base coach ever get to throw up a stop sign? I have decided my goal in life is to be the first base coach for the Cincinnati Reds. Best seat in the house!

But yeah i guess you got me. Bruce has not been well in my eyes. He still just dont get it imo. Pitchers have figured him out bad! Curveballs in the dirt or away and bruce is fail.
however Gomes has risen to the challenge of pitchers trying to figure him out. He is still hitting.

Ok that link to the Cardinals board just made me despise the Cardinals and most of their fans even more.
I know all fanbases do the same thing basically, but what a bunch of whiny little pricks.
Yes I know we complain about guys like Pujols. But mostly it's complaining about Pujols whining or "why do we continue to pitch to Pujols"
Some of those guys can give Cubs fans a run for most annoying.

He's pretty much a fastball hitter. I'm sure he can hit other pitches, but they didn't throw him one fastball tonight.
Our whole lineup struggles when they don't get fastballs.

They hit the ball all over the place tonight. Lucky for them if what you say is correct most pitchers those a lot of fastballs.

All teams struggle against guys like Carpenter when they are getting the curve over. Gotta give the pitcher credit there.

Can't remember who said it, but on mlb network yesterday morning, said something like: "He looks like an NFL linebacker, and he just SACKED you," while showing that look.
idk if he just really hates the Cards now, or if pure adrenaline was kicking in, but that was awesome.

Hope you get a chance to see them live sometime this year.

Gomes playing and spirit have really done wonders for this team.Good veteran leadership, and take no crap attitude.Other teams are starting to give the Reds respect, and Jonny Gomes will take Carpenter or any other hotshot pitcher on who challenge's him or the team.

It's a bummer that Gomes had to wait so long to get a contract offer from a Major League team, but I guess that's business.
texasdave
06-10-2010, 04:08 AM
It was ridiculous that he didn't get an offer. Kinda makes you wonder about the quality of major league GMs. Even if you weren't enamored with his fielding, are you telling me that no AL club had any use for Gomes as a DH? Especially when his asking price was so low?
DHs are OPSing a whopping .726 so far in 2010. Yet no AL general manager could see a need for Jonny Gomes. Okay.
