The Reds face the Phillies next series. The scheduled matchup for Wednesday is Harang vs. Halladay. Not a good matchup for the Reds. Travis Woods pitched last night for Louisville. He pitched 8.0 shutout innings (5h, 1bb, 9k) to record his 5th victory of the season. Since 5/18, Wood has pitched 8 consecutive quality starts (4-2, 1.62 ERA, 55.2ip, 12r/10er, 11bb, 56k, .186 opponents batting average). Why not send a pitcher down, call up Woods to pitch the lefty dominant Phillies on Wednesday, and push Harang back to the 1st game over the Cubs series on Thursday.

I do...not saying I would do it for that reason alone...but TW is due a call up and now is good as time as any...I say do it. Cant hurt...although AH has pitched some pretty good games as of late....good thought though

Wood's great streak sure is coming at a great time for the Reds if they'd like to keep him polished in AAA as their top trade chip in a potential deal for a game-changer at the trade deadline if that's what they're going for. Just speaking within the Reds circle of players they currently have, I would certainly like to see Wood given a shot in place of Lecure, who's a nice guy and glad he got a shot, but he's not long for the rotation with the stuff and command he has. Wood can take Sam's spot, pitch him on that day if it lines up with his schedule, and then you give Harang the extra day in that case.

I'd rather not Wood's first start be against Halladay and the Phillies at GABP.

I have Wood take LeCure's spot, starting against the much easier Cubs in the potentially pitcher friendly Wrigley (depending on wind).

Wood should have gotten the call instead of Lecure to begin with.

I wouldn't say that. LeCure had an impressive run of his own in AAA that warranted the call up. Now we've seen what Sam's got and it's Wood's turn to give it a go.

Maybe no one knows who Travis Woods is.

Reds had an off day last Thursday which threw a wrench in the rotation. Cueto went last Wednesday and his normal 5 day rotation would start Monday. But Harang pitched Friday, so he wouldn't go until Wednesday. Tuesday should be Leake's day. But will it? I would pitch Wood on Tuesday.

Normal rotation, here's what the matchups would be:

Monday:
Phillies = Kendrick - 4.71 ERA, .270 BAA
Reds = Cueto

Tuesday:
Phillies = Blanton - 6.53 ERA, .304 BAA
Reds = Travis Wood

Wednesday:
Phillies = Halladay
Reds = Harang

I think you make a good point about the lefty heavy Phillies lineup though. I would pitch Wood, to give him a look, and also to give Leake another day of rest to save his arm and keep his total innings down.

If Wood pitches well. If and when Bailey comes back, you know both he and LeCure are going back down to triple A. But atleast you'd know what you have in Wood.
