Personally I would have liked to seen Janish in at shortstop today and Heisey in Left Field. Leake could use the best defense possible. Give Rolen a day off against the Mets.

Am probably going tonight (meaning no GT participation) and really like seeing Rolen play. Is there a reason he's resting tonight instead of the day game tomorrow, which is when he usually rests, or is it just Dusty's... un-intelligence. [/RANT]

I think Dusty would rather rest Rolen against Blanton tonight than rest him against a tough pitcher like Halladay tomorrow. Maybe he feels like the guys have a better shot at winning tonight without Rolen than they do tomorrow night? I can't argue with that logic if that's where he's coming from because tomorrow's game could be brutal. I think we'll need everyone playing tomorrow if we want any chance to win that game.

Are they playing a bunch of day games in Chicago? perhaps a night off, followed by a string of day games? Perhaps Cairo hits Blanton well? Perhaps Rolen has hit Holliday well (I don't know if they would have matched up though). Perhaps Dusty made a gentleman's agreement w/ Philly: "you're two men down, we'll rest 2 starters"???? At least Cairo has been playing well. Hopefully Rolen is alright, just a normal day off.

Okay, I like that Dusty moved Brandon to the leadoff slot. He seems to be the best fit the way our club is currently configured. But when, oh when, is he going to give Cabrera some much needed time on the freaking bench?

21 for his last 117 (.179 ba)
9 doubles, 0 HR's, 0 triples, 6 walks, 14 strikeouts

Is there anybody here who doesn't think Paul Janish can put up AT LEAST those numbers? So even if Paul struggled to the tune of a .179 ba, he'd STILL be an improvement due to his glove work. Time to make the switch Dusty. Past time.

Why not play Rolen tonight and Stubbs and just accept tomorrow for what it is and rest everyone.

Cairo 2B
Leake SS
Owings RF
Nix LF
Janish 3B
Heisey CF
Miller C
Herrera 1B

That would be my 12:35 special for tomorrow. It is Halladay vs Harang I highly doubt it matters.

So with Utley out does that make Phillips a lock for the All Star game?

There aren't any Reds who are "locks" unfortunately. While Votto's numbers are ridiculous, they're still VERY similar to Pujols & Gonzales. Rolen's numbers are VERY good too. But eerily similar to David Wrights'. I'm not saying they SHOULDN'T be there, but there are just enough loopholes for several Reds players to get ignored. With all the great firstbasemen in the NL, somebody's going to get left out. I'm thinking it'll be both Gonzales & Votto. And I'll be *&#@%!

And with that...triple for Brandon.

I'm not sure whether to rail on Dusty for the stupid decision (what are you saving him for Dusty? How many PH chances do you think you get with a runner on 2B? Runs in the 6th count just as much as ones in the 8th) or the side effect of the 7 man bullpen. If Dusty has another guy on the bench, does he hit Rolen there?

True, and that's why I say he's "good" defensively. But when people ask questions like "Is he the best defensive CF in MLB" I have to laugh. Franklin Gutierrez is much better. (And I'm sure there are others, but that is one I know for sure.)

First someone's great, then he sucks, then he's great again, then he sucks, then he should be fired, then he should be given a huge extention. I know you were making a general statement and not directed at anyone in particular, but I will say I'm pretty consistent on Stubbs. He gets free pass after free pass from Dusty IMO. Heisey would be my starting CF no questions asked. You know, based on little things like "performance in games."

Oh, he would have at least been close to it. And I bet he would have caught it and wouldn't have been afraid of hitting a padded wall that he wasn't even that close to. Oh well, Stubbs is a former first-round pick and Heisey was a late-rounder. It really is that simple for me. One guy is clearly better than the other overall.

The whole "would have had, wouldn't have had it" is nonsense. No one knows how Heisey would have been stationed, if by having to play in more shallow he would not have been able to get to that ball, or any thing of the sort.
As I said, it's as fruitless as watching a Stubbs AB and saying Heisey would have gotten a hit.

Stubbs has made a number of fantastic plays. As a CF, he has an excellent arm, and gets pretty good breaks on every ball.

He has two main problems, 1) Balls directly over his head, and 2) Balls near the wall. I'm pretty sure these can be fixed as he continues to grow both offensively and defensively.

Not really, unless said "bench player" is the reigning minor league player of the year in the organization and has clearly played better than said "starting player" all season.

I'm definitely not one of these "the backup quarterback is the most-popular guy in town" guys. However, if you want to debate the merits of Stubbs v Heisey, I'll be here all week.

Not really. I like Heisey but I wouldn't bench Stubbs for him. The Reds need to continue to develop Stubbs IMO as I believe that the Reds may well go into next year with an OF of Heisey/Stubbs/Bruce and Heisey seems to be adapting to playing PT pretty well. I would however give Heisey more time in LF against RHP and spot him in CF against tough RHP.
