Half-day for me. Heading to the game. Enjoy gentlefolks.

Stubbs needs to not be in the starting lineup. Not only is it basically a guaranteed out, it's a guaranteed strike-out.

I'm thinking 5 pushups at home plate for every pitch that Stubbs watches sail in there for a called strike. He'd look like Laynce Nix before the end of the season.

I'm all for being patient at the plate, but he's reached the point now where he's simply GOT to be more aggressive at the dish. Pitchers are just pounding the zone on him because he's gotten the rep that he's not going to take that bat off his shoulders. He can make solid contact, it's not like he's swinging and missing everything. It's him watching them sail past that's killing him right now. It's putting him in the hole early in the count and forcing his hand to swing at stuff he shouldn't. Aggressive early is the key to fixing Stubbs. Once he's out of this funk and swinging better...THEN work on the patience. He's just got to reverse the current trend his in.

As for taking him out of the lineup...I've got no problem with them sitting him for a day or two and putting his butt in the cage. But he's shown too much promise to take him out for a longer stretch. He needs reps.

Dropping him to 8th means he will see even more breaking balls, and less pitches to hit. Not a place to send a slumping player, IMO.

Yep. .290 average since May 7th. Guaranteed strike-out. Too bad he struck out with the game on the line yesterday didn't he? Right?

I won't be around the GT today, but I think for everyone's sake, the Stubbs, OC, Gomes bashing has seriously got to cool down. It's flat out ridiculous that a first place team could come under this much scrutiny, and three of the starters could be completely ripped to shreds for every mistake that they made.

Enjoy the game.

.290 BA since May 7th- I'm amazed he has this. Maybe he did good in May, I don't know, but lately (at least the last 2 weeks) he's struggled immensely.

Too bad he struck out with the game on the line yesterday didn't he? Right?

No, he hit a double play ball, which Bruce broke up. Now with his speed, he probably would've beaten it out, but still I'm not thrilled with how he hit it at all.

Bruce did not break up that play. Castro dropped it before Bruce was even close to him. Regardless, he was not getting Drew there.

All he had to do there was put a ball on the ground not directly at someone, and the Reds were going to get a run, and he did just that.

I agree with this 100%. I'm a fan of Stubbs though, not one of the bashers. But even with that .290 average...he's STILL laying off very hittable pitches early in the counts WAY too often. That problem simply HAS to be addressed by the coaching staff and Drew.

Stubbs gets lambasted on this board for taking very hittable pitches early in the count, and OC gets lambasted for hitting very hittable pitches early in the count.

You can't always get what you want.

Random question...when was the last time Bronson pitched a night game? I swear he's ended up pitching most of the day games this season and knowing how much he'd prefer to pitch in the evening, I just find it completely amusing he's had a ton of the day games this year.

I think you should fully expect him to be "lambasted" when he OPSes around .500 for a month and continues make outs on the first pitch, all the while batting at the top of the order. I'm not one to incessantly rag on a guy, but calling out Cabrera's abhorrent approach and performance for the last 30 some odd games is completely legitimate.

There's a big difference though. Stubbs is trying to acclimate himself to MLB pitching still. He's still in the learning process. He's never going to learn properly if he's constantly having to hit down 0-2. Cabrera KNOWS how to hit. He shouldn't get phased by the count nearly as much as Drew does. Plus he's hitting near the top of the order where it's more critical to see more pitches. Not just for yourself, but also for the rest of your teammates.

And just for the record, I'm not lambasting Drew...just pointing out something he needs to work on. Cabrera however..........

He needed to make contact and hit a ground ball. He did that and won us the game.

He didn't hit a DP ball. I don't think he is capable of doing that.

On Stubbs...I'm frustrated too. Although at least 3 of his k's in the last 3 games have been on pitches clearly out of the zone.

All in all however, I think he's got enough discipline to see some improvements over time. He swings at the fewest pitches outside the zone (24.7) of any Red (Rolen is next), and sees the most pitches as well.

He's obviously focused on the right things...and not just hacking. A bit like Dunn, he can seem a bit overselective and get called looking too much. Stubbs also swings though way to many pitches....He is currently 6th in the league...behind power hitters Reynolds, Howard, Gomes, Dunn and Soriano.

It seems his eye is good enough to identify strikes...he just needs more experience and perhaps a swing adjustment to hit more of what he's swinging at.

Since the first time I saw him....I thought his swing was too loopy, often dropping that back shoulder like a power hitter. Someone needs to work on him getting a shorter, compact, simple, downward swing out of the guy to allow his legs to be more of an asset......because when he's on base, he's a game changer in a way no other Red comes close to.

320

The only logical explantion when you think a player is doing particularly bad when he's not is that your judgement is clouded becuase you don't like him.

You only remember the negative and ignore the positive.

Stubbs is not the problem. With his great speed and defense, he's an above average CF who still has lots of upside.

And the one thing he seems to be able to do consistently is drive in runs.

By doing this;
6 for 23 with 1 HR and 3 BB's.
He has had his struggles recently though.
The previous week he was 2 for 20 with 2 BB's.

So overall he's 8 for 43 with 5 BB's over the two weeks. It's not wrong to suggest he has been struggling but has struggled less this week.

I think sometimes it can take a while for impressions to go away especially if they confirm what we already believe.

He didn't K "the side" since Phillips was "on the Reds 'side'" and took him deep. Just a pet peeve of mine. No pitcher considers that striking out the side when they give up a HR (or a hit, walk, HBP, anything). It has to be 1-2-3 with K's for it to truly be "striking out the side."

"Side" means "the other team." In this sense, everyone who bats in that particular inning.

Announcers (and fans) who say that are wrong.

"Rally-killer Cabrera" pops out to SS. All we needed was a fly ball there.

OCab...4 walks in the inning...and he swings at the first pitch. Pop out to shallow left

Shocking that Stubbs and O-Cab have made the outs this inning.

In memory of their fallen hero (Zambrano) the Cubs are in full melt-down mode.

My view on the pitches that Stubbs took were that he wasn't going to hit them hard if he swung. He was 2-0. You look for one pitch, in one zone there, and if it's not there you take. On 2-1, the pitch was on the corner low and inside, a terrible pitch to hit hard for a tall RH. Those are usually pop ups if he makes contact.

I have no problem with Stubbs taking those pitches. Him swinging through a hanging curve after that for strike three is inexcusable.

I don't think I've ever seen the Reds score 3 runs in an inning without getting a hit. This is amazing. I love every bit of it.

Can we dispel the notion that Dusty doesn't like walks now?
