Too bad we can't put one of other catchers on the 40 man. I have no idea who I would take off for Denove or Castillo but it seems awful risky to play the weekend with only Corky. Carlos Fisher seems like a safe bet to pass through.

Fay thinks that Hanigan will be in Philly soon with Ramon going on the DL retroactive to sometime around the Cubs game when he hurt his knee. I guess we'll find out soon if that happens or not but he also said Hanigan left the game early last night due to neck stiffness. What a way to go into the All Star break.

I'd pull him, but that's just ultra-conservative me. He's usually around 90-100 pitches for a game. With 2-3-4 coming up next inning, I'd let someone in the bullpen throw what'll probably be a 10-15 pitch minimum inning.

Dusty does no favors to this team by pushing the CG on pitchers. Now his ERA is damaged and he still had to go to the bullpen...and we are only 2 up in a game we dominated all day. Just stupid as it gets. I guess if you have to have a fault, it's being good to your players, but not at the expense of a win.

Leake should never have started the inning

Hindsight is 20/20. He started the inning having throw 83 pitches. No way you don't run him out there after burning through the pen last night going 12 innings. Some balls fell in for hits that weren't falling in earlier, nothing you can do about it. Now it's Coco's job to close it out.

Phillies 9th:

Victorino doubles off the right field wall.
Ibanez flies out to Stubbs, Victorino tags and goes to third.
Howard singles down the left field line, Victorino scores.
Werth hits a broken bat single through the hole to left.
Dobbs homers down the right field line, Leake is done at 101 pitches.

Cordero in to pitch. (Say a little prayer....)
Schneider flies to Stubbs.
Ben Francisco, for Castro, walks.
Cody Ransom, for Romero, homers just over the right field wall. Cordero is terrible. TERRIBLE.
Rollins walks.
Victorino pops out to Janish.

You can nitpick little things from Dusty, but when your closer is a 400-lb blimp who can't throw inside and can't get punch-and-judy garbage out, there's only so much a manager can do.

So because Howard flared one off the end of the bat you pull him? Another hard hit and I'd agree. But a weak opposite field bloop is hardly evidence of a guy losing it.

It's not a matter of him losing it. It's a matter of getting a fresh arm in there with men on base. All pitchers are more and more likely to make a mistake pitch the deeper they get into a game. Pretty much every pitch after 75 gets riskier and riskier.

I am probably the biggest Dusty apologist on this board and I have to blame him for this 9th inning.

The way you manage a big lead like that is you let the starting pitcher start the inning. If I guy gets to second base, you pull him for a fresh arm. Dusty wanted to get Leake his first CG and cost him a win, and maybe even a Reds win.

edit: just to be clear, Cordero deserves much of the blame too, but Dusty is not blameless here.

Its not on Dusty. He has a closer making 12 million and he needed him to get Ben Francisco and some Ransom dude. Players play the game.Oh yeah. You've got a rookie pitcher in there and a closer who is simply shaky most of the time. You've goit a 6 run lead and all you need is three outs. I'm not a Dusty basher, but when Leake gave up the first hit, his leash would have been short,. Then, you bring in someone other than Codero (regardless of whether he make $12 million or not, he is simply not doing the job--and hasn't for a long time) to get the job done.

Just watch the phillies pitcher who just blows people away. That ain't Codero and probably never will be. If we lose this one, it will be devastating on a number of fronts. Dusty, the baseball world and this board refuses to understand that letting a rookie get a complete game pales in comparison to winning. We should be 4 games up and will probably be 2 games up at the end of the night with Halladay tromorrow.
