vs. Cole Hamels

Janish getting the start at SS, Rolen back.

I'll take it upon myself to avoid the sweep. Probably no PBP from me today, though.

Glad to see Rolen back and Janish getting a start. Not so thrilled to see Paul in the two hole, I'd rather see him swap places with Hanigan. But oh well; shortstop bats second, dude. ;)

Here's to a Reds win and--regardless of the outcome--first place at the break!

I'd rather see him swap places with Hanigan.

Hanigan ain't starting according to the SD lineups I've seen. Da Corky is in there.

I think the reason that Abe is up here has something to do with two catchers having to have been put on the DL.

IMO, Miller has done a decent job for the Reds given the situation. Ramon should be back a few games after the All Star break and then Corky will be a Bat again. However, I was glad that we had someone that could step in and fill the gap as well as he did.

The message being:

If you swing on the first pitch with the bases loaded and hit a sreaming liner which is unluckily caught and turned into a DP, you will be benched.

I don't think it's a question of Baker having the balls to send such a message, he just doesn't have the stupidity to send such a message.

I think the reason that Abe is up here has something to do with two catchers having to have been put on the DL.

IMO, Miller has done a decent job for the Reds given the situation. Ramon should be back a few games after the All Star break and then Corky will be a Bat again. However, I was glad that we had someone that could step in and fill the gap as well as he did.Rem

Agreed.

The message being:

If you swing on the first pitch with the bases loaded and hit a sreaming liner which is unluckily caught and turned into a DP, you will be benched.

I don't think it's a question of Baker having the balls to send such a message, he just doesn't have the stupidity to send such a message.

Interesting that the Reds are about to go 20 innings without scoring and still we've been right there every game. What if we were the one getting a hit here and there and a good pitcing performance from the bullpen on Friday. That's what separates champions from also-rans. I think this series tells us a lot about this team.

Do you give Wood a slot in the starting rotation? With Arroyo's remarks today and Harang's troubles, we could see a rotation of Wood,Cueto, Maloney, Chapman, Leake, and Volquez. Who's the odd man out?

BTW, another impatient hitter in Votto. These guys are anxious today.

17 consecutive scoreless innings.

Of these guys....Chapman. He needs more time. Definitely all of this season, probably some of next too. His stuff is electric...but his command.

But I see Chapman AND Maloney out. Bailey in.

Not to absolve the offense, by any stretch, but it's pretty weird that they get swept four games while outhitting the Phillies, 34-28.

The Reds now lead the majors in being shut out (10).

That's a lot for one half of a season, and I wonder how many of those games were 1-2 run losses. Score a run or two in half of those and they're possibly 5 games ahead in first place, instead of 1 game.

CrackerJack

Jay Bruce = zero RBI's in last 11 games - doesn't help. Left 3 on base today.

Phillips, Gomes, Bruce and Hanigan left 14 runners on yesterday.

Too many guys seriously slumping at the wrong time. Bruce has never really improved or come around with lefties either.

GAC

Another "problem" was that during this series we weren't getting the hits when we needed them. For example - we had bases loaded yesterday with no outs and got nadda, and that may be due to the fact that a few of these guys were pressing, trying to make something happen.

This little break may do some of them some good. But this team performed well above expectations during the first half. I think we'll see an interesting second half.
