Yep, in the 8th inning in particular...forget pitch counts when you're that late in a game, it's 100 degrees out also. Not excusing the offense, just do what you have to, to put yourself in the best position to win.

Hanigan was out with an injury. Crashing? Getting back in the groove of things may be more like it.

Yeah that is what I am assuming is going on. Weird for him as he's been so consistently good with the bat for some time now.

I do worry about the LH pitching issue with Bruce though, which compounds when he's slumping against RH's obviously.

Can't blame Rolen. When a guy throws you out from just in front of the warning track, you tip your cap. Awesome, awesome throw. I know some Reds fans don't believe this, but sometimes the opponents just make good plays against you.

Maybe crashing is harsh, but normalizing is more like it. He was so far over his head that he is due to even out, which means a crash of some sorts.

Cardinals winning 6-2. That's why protecting a lead is so important this time of year. The offense is just floundering right now and no matter how good your pitching is, you have to have runs. Let's hope the Reds' bats come alive soon.

Cards are winning, but Garcia had to be taken out of the 4th inning as he was getting hit hard again. He now has averaged just over 4 innings his last 4 starts. The Cards will have a hard time competing if he can't make it to the fifth inning the rest of the season.

Cordero is flat nasty when he is willing to come inside and let it rip. Hopefully he is fearless and confident from here on out. That is 90% of the battle for a reliever.

The Reds were one phenomenal play from putting up a six spot on a really good young pitcher. I don't know of another CF in the NL that would have made that catch.

Colorado is a good team that's played well lately.

The time off should help the old farts (Rolen and Cabrera), along with Phillips, Bruce, and Votto, who've all played a ton of games already.

The Reds have to score runs and win.

Okay, if I say something about stepping out during the game again, either somebody step up and keep the ball rolling or stop me from leaving. 3-0 when I leave, I'm gone for 2 innings and we give up 2 runs. My bad guys. Totally my fault. *grin*

Did I miss an interview or something concerning Cordero? Because Hanigan was setting up inside consistently in the 9th with Cordero. I hadn't seen that all year it seems. Did a coach or Cordero or Hanigan for that matter, mention something about needing to come inside more often? Because from what I saw, his stuff was pretty much identicle to what I've seen all year, but the pitch calling was TOTALLY different. Was Dusty calling the pitches, or Hanny?

WV, I was at the game and can't disagree with you more.

Bronson came out for the 8th having gone 7 innings and given up 1 run and three hits. He gave up the home run to olivo and a walk to stewart(good at bat.) Dusty could have taken him out, but he was facing the 8th batter and hadn't really lost a lot on his fastball. There's some sense in seeing if Bronson can get the 8th hitter out and waiting until the Rockies pick their pinch hitter to see whether you bring in a lefty or a righty.

As it turns out, the 8th hitter hit a ground ball to right field that got through. I could see taking him out after the Olivo home run, but there's no way you take him out before the 8th, and there's some logic in leaving Arroyo in to face someone he can get out.

Anyway in the end it all worked out.

That's all. If the offense gets going again, it's a moot point anyway, but in a close game, there is no sense in taking chances especially since the division lead is so close.

Hoosier Red

I understand that point. But quite honestly you can't have Rhodes make 50 appearances in the 2nd half. The Cardinals are going to be breathing down our neck for the next 2 1/2 months(I hope) and I don't think the Reds are likely to blow out a lot of people or get blown out so we still have to be judicious in using our two best relievers.

I see your point, but you already knew what you were getting with Bronson last night. You HOPE you know what you'll get from a reliever, but you truthfully never know. Arthur's been very hittable his last few outings. Masset's been extremely good of late, but he will still occasionally have that blip on the radar and get tagged. I thought Dusty handled it properly last night.

As for the Cards breathing down our necks...I say ignore the standings. Play for the win EVERY night. It doesn't matter who you pitch, you're taking a chance every at bat no matter what. And with how the Rockies have been playing the past few weeks...even our best pitcher can be smoked.
