Ouch.

That being said, anytime there are four pages of lineup complaints, said lineup generally produces and wins.

I have a good feeling about today, even with Jay Bruce in the three hole.

Funny, Cairo bats 6th with a better lineup, falls to 7th with more regulars out.

Stubbs hasn't batted anywhere other than 7th for awhile.

You would think Gomes would enhance his value (as well as his playing time) if he could/would play 1b, especially as the right handed bat to rest Votto vs lefties on days off.

Both teams putting out some backups. Harris,Kennedy and Nieves are all backups for the Nats. Guess we will see who has the best bench today.

Dusty and these damn getaway day lineups he comes up with. He tries to be too cute every time. This race is going to be decided by a game or two, we can't afford to give our best players a day off, especially when other key players are on the shelf. Amazing. You know, giving players a day off is not with a view to losing. The theory is that by giving days off you actaully will win more games over the course of a season. And pretty much everyone connected to baseball prescribes to that theory.

I don't think you can expect every player to play 162 games a season.

Inevitable that Volquez would have some command issues after his injury layoff. And he did have command issues there. It wasn't just the umpire.

less the a year removed from TJ surgery(he is way ahead of the normal schedule). Letting him pitch as many high stress innings as possible sounds like a wonderful idea.

Shocker. A team struggling without its best two players.

You have to wonder if we don't win that game last night with Rolen at 3b.

The game last night could have been won. Bray really hurt by allowing the add-on runs. Then the homer off Rhodes. Those bullpen add-on runs really hurt and the Reds did score 5.

Also the line drive off Cairo hurt last night. He can hit, but he's really not a replacement at third defensively.

As for today, though, hard to see it going Reds' way.

Rhodes pitching last night was exhibit #1 of the lack of vision of our manager.

People need to calm down, it's a 4-3 home stand. As long as they go out and go 4-2 in Houston and Milwaukee I wont be concerned. If they do that, they will be 8-5 out of the break. That's pretty good baseball.

He can hit
actually he can't as his career aptly points out. Beware of small sample sizes, regression to the mean can be a real pain in the keester.

Rhodes didn't seem like the optimal decision last night, although the Reds were facing a series of lefty hitters in a winnable game. Rhodes has been overused, true.

As it turns out, of course, it was the right decision because Fisher - the other choice last night - is now available today to soak up innings in this clunker game.

Dusty does rely very heavily on his three late inning guys. Probably when Izzy is on the team, he will back off Rhodes/Cordero/Masset a bit.

Back to the game. The Reds have runners at 1st and 3rd with no one out. Gomes is up. A chance to get back into this one.

How so?pitching him while down 2 runs in the 9th inning. The Reds win expectancy at that point was .075. The game was essentially over and yet Dusty wasted an inning of RHodes.

Days like today I hate baseball. They get a bunch walks and bleeders, a GABP home run, and 6 runs. We're hittin the ball on the squares, and can't get anything.

Really? Did you watch the game? The Reds were threatening ever inning from the 7th. Had Rhodes been able to hold the lead the Reds had their leadoff hitter on base in the top of the 9th. Thats what you want, the tieing run coming to the plate in the 9th.

If Fisher had pitched last night he is still available to pitch as many innings today as needed. He is fungible.

It is Dusty's fault for wasting Rhodes at a point where they had a 93% chance of losing.

They why not just forefit the 9th if they had such a small chance of winning?

Didn't have to forfeit. Just don't kill the best pitchers we have.

I'm not going to ruin todays game thread anymore. Was just making a statement that the guys can't handle a pitching staff.

Why waste one of your most valuable resources when the odds in winning were ~1 in 20?

If we have quality starts, I think we should have something called quality relief appearances, to describe the reliever who does a good job contrasted with the guy who gives up inherited runs, fills the bases and escapes with a low ERA.

On to Houston to take it out on the Astros.
