Most Reds haven't seen Lopez much but:

Gomes 8 for 17 with 2 HR
Edmonds 3 for 6 with 1 HR.
Cairo 5 for 16 with a double and a triple.
Nix 2 for 8 with a double.
Rolen 2 for 3 with a HR.

Ramon Hernandez 1 for 9 with 3Ks.

I've gotta say, I really like the idea of Bruce in the 2 hole. It hasn't paid dividends yet (I think it's only been twice now), but I really think it will.

I'm tickled we have the lead we do. My wife are heading to her folks house in Missouri on Saturday and we will still be in first place by our arrival. I'd like it to be a nice lead when we get there. No smugness though - we're celebrating my in-laws 65th wedding anniversary, although my 88 year old father-in-law did call my wife to talk some smack after the Cardinals kicked our rearends.

I do hate to be "that guy" but isn't this the exact time of the year that his personal issues stem from?

I don't mean to ask that as if it's any of my business, but it's natural to wonder.

I didn't know Rodrigo Lopez was still in baseball. I had to look him up to see if he was the same guy. Looks as if he didn't pitch in 2008 and only pitched a few games last year. Hasn't been that long since the Reds regularly threatened to acquire him. Nice to think such days are past.

For as bad as Bruce has been lately, I do feel like he's about to go on a torrid spell. If they could get him firing on all cylinders for September, that would be a huge boost. You make a great point though... having a seasoned veteran professional-hitting lefty might be good for him.

I said late last year I was perfectly content with him going into the season as the starting shortstop just to see what the Reds could get out of him. I've gone from being content to actively being intrigued to see what he could do everyday. I truly believe he's gotten stronger and has more pop in his swing. He's cut down on his strikeouts, been a patient hitter and really done a great job this year. With his defense and the OPS being down league-wide at short, he could be a very valuable asset the rest of the year.

Fully agreed. Fortunately, he may be an asset for more than just the rest of this year but for the forseeable future. I think I saw somewhere that the league average OPS for shortstops is less than .700. I really think Janish could produce a 700 OPS over a full season.

I would definitely go Arroyo-Cueto-Volquez. Wood would piggyback Volquez, as we know Eddy doesn't go deep in games. Start him with his pregame warmup routine in the second. If Volquez goes 5, Wood will be ready just like a start. If he goes deeper, Wood won't be needed.

I like Homer out of the pen in the playoffs. Definitely an asset.

Yes. I posted it the other day that the MLB aggregate OPS of all players playing shortstop this year has been .695. That's rather mind-boggling to consider.

So for Janish to be over .800 (even if that's slightly inflated for him) is real encouraging.
