The Reds have secured permission to honor Pete Rose on the 25th anniversary of him breaking Ty Cobbs all-time hit record.

Reds CEO Bob Castellini received the OK from Commissioner Bud Selig.

The details of when and what could be announced as soon as today.

More here... (http://cincinnati.com/blogs/reds/2010/08/19/reds-get-permission-to-honor-rose/)

I like it... another step forward. At this rate, he outta be un-banished by 2099.

But he can't do it on the actual date because he has a previous commitment at...wait for it...a CASINO. Some people never learn.

Sometimes things just strike you....maybe because he's been in the news a lot lately, but does anyone else see similarities between Rod Blagojevich and Pete Rose? Bad haircuts, incessant talkers always getting themselves in trouble, on the verge of major repercussions but always slipping out, just generally unsavory guys.

Hey, that's my ex governor your talking about there! Actually many people think he's still calling the shots here, a certain hung jury may be an example of that.

You realize he didn't make millions playing ball right? What's wrong with earning money?

Uh.....on the 25th anniversary of breaking the hits records......you can't break a casino date and move it to the next weekend??

I am pretty sure Pete made millions playing ball.

Nothing wrong with earning money but Rose has done so much to cheapen his stature over the years.

And I say this as a born West Sider, former DeMolay, and West Hi alum (like Pete).

I hear before the ceremony they're going to have a 1 hour Bingo session. 50,000 Bingo cards are going to be handed out. The winner gets $4,192 dollars. :D

My guess is Pete has a contract with the casino to appear and would probably cost him money to break it. I mean he had no reason to believe Bud will allow it to happen in cincy, so I don't see it as a big deal.

Or hes making money and had no idea MLB would let him be honored.

You dont think they are connected?

Yeah over his whole career he did, I should have said per year. He was probably making a couple hundred K a year on average, but with his lifestyle that's not much.

It's well known he doesn't have much left, and if a casino offers him 50k or more I'm sure he's going to take it. It can't hurt his rep any more than it already is. It's not a coincidence the casino booked him on this date, I'm sure as others said he has a contract for the event. Sure I would like to see him at GABP on the 11th but I don't blame him for not being there.

Frankly, I never thought of it. But even so, I don't see how the casino would be harmed by moving Pete's appearance from 25 years after he broke the record to 25 years + one week. What fan/customer is not gonna show just because the casino appearance is not on the exact date?

Then what do they do with the entertainment they had booked for that week? Bump them a week back?

Pete made 7+ million atleast throughout his career and was one of the first players to sign a million dollar contract when he left for Philly. If Pete really wanted to get into the hall of fame or back into baseball he would not do business with casino's and would live a clean life, but he doesn't so he must not care.

What entertainment? What are you talking about? I only know what I read, and it says Rose is appearing at a casino. If the story is bigger & different than that, do what it takes to move everything. The historical importance at the ballpark is bigger.

Not to Pete, he would rather sell his name for money. I think unsigned Pete Rose memorabilia is worth more and is more rare than unsigned.

You think he's they only attraction the casino has? They book entertainers, bands, celebs etc., each and every day of the week to attract customers. If they bump Rose, it's surely going to cause a conflict with their other bookings. It's not as simple as just moving his appearance back a week.

His booking at the casino must have came before he got word he'd be able to appear on field at GABP. Would you now have him go back on his word, break a contract etc. to make the event at GABP? Or instead, just do it the next day? If the casino wants to cooperate and let him out of his agreement, fine and dandy. Other than that, the day later solution is probably the best.

Yes.

Yes.

I mean, are you kidding me? Do another casino date, one you could do 100 times over the next 2 years if you wanted to, or be welcomed back before a crowd of Reds fans at GABP on the one-and-only 25th anniversary of your MLB hits record?

I'm really not understanding why that's even a remote question.

I guess we'll find out which is more important to Pete - being honored on the 25th anniversary of his greatest individual achievement by his home team, home fans and hometown. Or another casino appearance.

Which will he choose?

ive got no problem with pete making some extra cash but everyones gotta admit that the irony of this is extremely funny.

The majority of Reds fans defended him for years when others said he bet on baseball. When I learned that we as Cincinnati Reds fans had to buy his book in order to read his admission of guilt, that's when my support for him ended and my contempt for him began. He's never apologized to his biggest fans, Reds fans, since this has unfolded. I really wish the Reds would not honor this POS and if he thinks that a prior commitment with a CASINO (isn't that ironic) is more important than receiving accolades from what's left of his Reds fan base, then it'd be about par for the course.

It's funny and sad at the same time. One could probably bet on which one he's going to choose. Does Vegas have any odds on this? The casino he has the deal with could have a live video feed of him at GAB. It wouldn't be the same thing as having him in person. A lot of the people who go to these things want a picture taken or an autograph.

For me its not sad because all of Pete's problems have been self afflicted.

I'm not saying Pete shouldn't make a living. What I am saying is, when you've been banned for gambling, and you're trying to get back in maybe you shouldn't gamble or associate with gambling or gamblers. I could be wrong, it's just my opinion.

According to baseball-referance.com Pete made $1million in 1986 and over $7million in his career. If he has no money now, he has noone to blame but himself (and the IRS, the horse-tracks, casinos, bookies, MLB, and anyone who refuses to pay for his autograph). I loved Pete the ball-player, and I believe he belongs in the Hall, but he is his own worst enemy.

I guess Rose & the casino thought the same thing.....from the paper this morning.

He said he regretted any confusion caused in the give-and-take between his people and Hollywood Casino and the Reds at the outset when the event at the ballpark was being arranged. He was already committed to the roast.

"But everybody communicated and we worked it out," he said. "There was some lack of communication at the beginning, but it worked out well."
