OF Jim Edmonds put on the 15-day DL
RP Jordan Smith optioned to Louisville Bats (AAA)
SP (but will be used out of bullpen) Sam LeCure recalled from Louisville Bats (AAA)
2B (but will be used in a utility infielder role) Chris Valaika called up (contract purchased?) from Louisville Bats (AAA)

Valaika was already on the 40-man roster, so the Reds just recalled him from Louisville. They didn't have to purchase his contract.

Probably not. I would think he is on a split contract where he would be paid the minimum while in the major leagues but substantially less if he's in the minors.

Players without experience are usually paid $30,000 in their first year on the 40-man roster and then $65,000 after that. So Valaika was probably making $65k.

The Reds have starting pitching issues no matter what some say. Cueto is struggling and his babip, k/9, ld rate are big worries.

Volquez, Bailey, and Wood are all young and very volatile. The Reds have some worries.

This is the toughest stretch of the year IMO. I said before the series I'd take a 5-4. They are playing with house money for me now.

I just rewound and watched again, the 3-1 pitch was borderline.. i'm pretty sure the 3-2 one was low

Yeah, I just did the same. I think the foul ball was going to be low. The 3-2 pitch was low too.

Does this remind anyone of the D-Backs game where we faced Daniel Hudson? Gomes looking bad in left, everyone striking out, and everyone mailing in the game? It sounds very familiar to me, no reason for people to be giving up so early...I do understand the Giants are a better team nonetheless.

For someone whose fastball tops out at 91 mph, he sure is wild. Most pitchers with these kind of control problems throw in the mid-to- upper 90's. :eek:

The Reds are literally playing with 8 fielders. I can't believe that anyone truly believes Jonny Gomes should start on any NL team including the Pirates.

I don't think it's been that bad against Wood. So he gave up a solo HR, there haven't been that many hard hits to warrant the results

He has been putting up Taverasesque offensive numbers for a while now, coupled with amazingly poor defense. Of course he should be starting for the Reds ;)

Bruce is fine, Stubbs hit the ball hard his first time up, we'll be just fine

Many of us were tarred and feathered for expecting Heisey to be forgotten. The love for Gomes is a major reason I have huge concerns about Mr Baker getting an extension. What manager would play Gomes in this ballpark?

What can I say, I'm simply arguing that Wood had more than nothing. This was not a 7 run shellacking...this was a subpar performance from Travis compounded by bad luck and bad defense.

I hadn't seen this until Yadier Molina started doing it a few years ago but now it seems like a lot of catchers utilize this technique almost every game.

On Torres' last single Ramon tapped his glove twice on the inside and then relocated to the outside. If a heady batter is in the box I think you risk advertising where the pitch is going. I know its knit picking but just thought i'd add my 2 cents
