“But then he hit that rocket in his last at-bat,” Baker said. “He’s so valuable on defense. He can do a lot of things to help us without hitting.”

1st place or not, it's comments like this that make me want to throw Dusty in the Ohio River.

You would have wanted to toss Boone, Narron, and Miley into the river every night.

1st place or not, it's comments like this that make me want to throw Dusty in the Ohio River.

320

Why? Yes Brandon has struggled lately. But he IS bound to snap out of it sooner or later. And we certainly need him to. And again, Dusty's correct...he could indeed go 0 for 4 and still be an asset on the field. Dusty's certainly been known to make some rather bone-headed remarks...but I don't see it with this one.

I'm assuming that comment was about Phillips.

So you want to throw Dusty in the river for recognizing how important Phillips' defense is?

Seems reasonable.

Others have wanted to throw Dusty in the river for less, this seems like an improvement :)

I think he's bringing up Phillips tough spell of hitting to keep us from focusing on our #5 hitter, who has been worse in every facet, and provides exceptional negative value on defense.
Dusty is just a master of misdirection. :)

My biggest problem is that him "hitting a rocket" was the difference between playing in his probably pain-induced slump again tonight, and getting a much-needed night off. And yes, it was about BP. Sorry for not making note of that.

I like listening to Jim Kelch...but I'm glad Marty's back tonight (he'd been off the last several games). I'd much rather listen to him. Growing up listening to him and Joe in my bedroom late at night (when I wasn't supposed to be), Marty IS Reds baseball to me in many ways. Games without Marty only serves to remind me how much I miss listening to Joe as well. *sigh*

I kind of agree with 320 here. Phillips is clearly hurting, as you're alluding to. They need to get him rested up and healthy. I'd rather take the chance the Reds lose a game or two without him than have him 70% (or whatever he is) in the playoffs.

I agree at this point, but some of your other calls for the pen have been extremely premature.

I think the quick hook is often a mistake, especially when a guy has been having a great game. Clearly Wood is getting hit now, so I think it's time to plan for other alternatives if the Reds want to stay in this game.

I don't think my calls have been premature at all. Up until the last few days I think Dusty has been too patient with his starting pitchers. And he hasn't seemed to be prepared with bullpenners when guys go bad in about the sixth inning.

In the last few days, I think Dusty has done much better, has managed like it's a pennant race. He's used his pen well, except of course for some overreliance on Cordero.

Uh and you saw what using the bullpen did against Pittsburgh. That's the point... having a quick hook in a pennant race is NOT always the right answer. You sometimes have to use the judgment to stick with a starting pitcher through a rough patch because there's no guarantee the replacement will come in and do better. There's no guarantee he'll even do as good.

Obviously. But there are reasons to be patient in April and May that don't pertain in a pennant race.

Now is not the time for confidence building. Nor is it the time to preserve the pen. When a guy falters, or when it appears he's losing something, you don't hesitate to make a move.

Reds now have a deep pen. Of course, there's no guarantee the pen will succeed. But my philosophy in stretch run games is to go to the pen.

I would feel differently if the Reds had a Halliday or similar type pitcher. I would stick with guys like that longer.

This isn't about confidence or preservation. It's about not overreacting everytime someone gets into trouble. This is Major League baseball. No matter how good you are, you're going to run into spurts where the other team hits you. You can't go yanking a starter in the name of a pennant race at the first sign of trouble.

Depends on the situation of course.

Similarly, I favored sticking with Cueto beyong 120 pitches the other night. He was a hot pitcher, showed no signs of weakening.

Really the same philosophy. The normal rules of pitching usage don't apply in these games.

Stick with hot starters longer. Go to the pen early when a guy falters or appears to be losing it.

Just my philosophy, feel free to disagree, as you seem to.
