Top 5 Reds teams all time

Okay, looking back on the Reds incredible history people continue to point to the 75 or 76 team or the 90 team. So my question to all you Reds fans out there.....

List your top 5 Reds teams of all time....

I mean yea it's easy to list say the 76 team as 1, with the 75 team as 2. But was the 90 team the 3rd best overall team? Does a team like the 81 team that was overall the best team in baseball that season, but didn't make the playoffs make the top 5 list? Where does the 39, 40 or 19 team fit in? What about the 61 team? I challenge you to make your top 5 all time Reds teams.

you have to figure the 81 Reds in there also.

I was going to mention those teams. Actually, any of the Reds teams from 1970 thru 1976, in my opinion were better teams than any we've had since, including the 1990 WS champions. A lot of casual or younger fans probably believe the Big Red Machine nickname means only the '75 and '76 teams, but they were bigtime before they finally won a world series title. Those early 70's teams were great too. If you want to go strictly on talent alone, the five best Reds teams ever most likely all played between 1970 and 1976.

All of those teams were great except for the 1971 team. Because of that disappointing season the Lee May-Joe Morgan (along with other players) trade was made to give the team more speed.

Wasn't Cesar Geronimo involved in that trade too? I'm thinking Bobby Tolan was our CF before that trade? I could be wrong.

In reality I agree that the 1970, 1972-74 Reds were as good or better than some of these teams, but RINGS make the difference.

The 1940 team went to the WS b2b and had a lot of great players including 3 MVP winners- Lombardi, McCormick and Bucky Walters. They had 2 dominant pitchers with Walters and Derringer. They went 100-53 for a .654 W-L% which is 2nd only to the 1976 Reds. To me they are CLEARLY better than the 1990 or 1919 teams.

Do you think the 81 team was better than any of my honrable mentions? If so please explain, I was only 2 years old in 1981 and don't remember anything about that season except for the fact that we got screwed of the playoffs.

I won't say they are better, but I'm partial to the 81 team because that is the year I moved to Cincy and got to go to my first Reds game. That team featured Tom Terrific and Super Mario in the rotation, Tom Hume (before he was Boom-Boom) in the bully and several pieces of the Big Red Machine still producing. Joe Nolan had taken over behind the plate and had a very good season, Dreissen and Bench played first, Oester and Concepcion gave the Reds the best middle infield in baseball, Knight was the weakest link, Foster Griffey and Collins were a formidable outfield with power in left, speed in right, and Griff in the middle.

I am convinced given the opportunity that this team would have represented the NL in the World Series. I don't think anyone was going to beat Seaver that season (he did go 14-2 in the strike-shortened regular season), and I would take Soto against everyone's #2.

I was watching the MLB Network the other day and they are re-airing the excellent Ken Burns documentary "Baseball". The one thing I found funny/interesting was that 1869 and 1870 teams that won 130 straight games including the 1869 team which is the only unbeaten team in MLB history. Probably shouldn't be on this list but if you want dominant teams for their time, you gotta kind of give props to the old school Reds.
