I was wrong. Crawford did get more than Jayson Werth so Washington did raise the price tag of all Free Agents...

7 years 142 Million

So do I get to say "I told you so" now?

Does anyone now think they have a better offense than the Yankees?

Is this where Theo Epstein starts crying again about all the money the Yankees spend?

texas, you make a good point. I have to laugh when I see Red Sox fans in different forums complaining how the Yankees payroll is too high.

Between Werth and Crawford this is bad news for the Reds. Basically it has pushed the price of 1 WAR to $5MM. At these prices, Votto will probably get $30-35MM per year when he hits free agency. And if I'm reading the WAR stats right this means Bruce and Stubbs would be $20MM players on the open market? Yikes!

I do laugh too, but the Yanks are the ones who started so high with team salary, and now others feel they have to try and spend and match to remain competetive, esp if your in that division. Is out of control and going to be interesting to watch end of bench payers who get 20 innings or less signing mulit-million dollar contracts. The fans are the ones who lose in the long run though as teams break up and ticket prices go out of control to see "X" player as well as the supporting team around them.

Ridiculous. Another guy we could have had. The Reds could have easily paid him $143 million. Another missed opportunity.

Pretty soon, the Yankees and BoSox will have all their positions locked up with 7 year contracts. Where are guys like Pujols and Votto going to go? Nobody else will be able to afford them, and the Yanks and Red Sox will have 1B covered. Hmmmm.

Who do we trade for Ellsbury? What does Boston need?

Dodgers, Cubs, Angels, Phillies, and Mets still have plenty of money.

I think the Phillies have Howard making 25 Million and Halladay making 20 Million, I doubt they add a 28 Million + Salary and they have a 1st baseman too... Which would be 25 Million Dollar Man Ryan Howard...

I believe the Cubs will be making him their NUMBER 1 Priority in the next offseason...

They signed Carlos Pena for 1 Year. They have a number of contracts coming off the Books...

Carlos Pena 10.125 Million

Carlos Silva 12.75 Million
Aramis Ramirez 16.75 Million
Kosuke Fukudome 14.5 Million
John Grabow 4.8 Million

Add that up Guys and you see the Cubbies looking to Pujols to get relevant again...

I can see the Cubs signing Pujols.

They've shown the willingness to field a big payroll. This year, according to Cot's Baseball Contracts (http://spreadsheets.google.com/pub?key=t9K9o3WvbhtpLNlQbOV9Ulg&output=html), they had a $144 million payroll.

Lilly ($13M) and Derek Lee's ($13M) contracts came off the books this year. After next season, Ramirez ($14M), Fukudome ($14M) and Carlos Silva's ($13M) contracts come off the books. That's $67M off the books.

Look for Cubbies and Cardinals to get into a bidding war that the Cardinals bow out of.
