Looks like Dusty's talking up Heisey may have been real. Good to see him get another start. Though I think just about anybody can have success against Nelson Figueroa.

I'm going to make the educated guess based on today's line-up that Cairo will start at third tomorrow and Renteria at short. I kind of wish they would have had one of Cairo/Renteria start today so we won't be much weaker at both positions tomorrow. LeCure will certainly need the defensive help.

I would guess that Fransisco will start tomorrow at third, not Cairo. That is probably why we saw Cairo replace Phillips last night so he could get a couple of ABs in this series.

I looked at the lineup for about 3 minutes and tried to find something to complain about. Finally came up with one:

"Why the heck does Dusty have to post this awesome lineup so early?? How am I supposed to get any work done this afternoon when I have this lineup to look forward to? Unbelievable Dusty."

Cards just lost to the Pirates, and are now 2-4.

Yep, I think Dusty has pretty much appeased the masses here.

Now watch the Reds lose 4-1.

I'm not defending Volquez becuase 3 walks will do you in, but when the other team puts only 4 balls into play, and they are all singles (including 2 flares and one bleeder), Volquez wasn't getting much luck.

He didn't pitch nearly as bad as the actual results.

Other than the 4 walks, Volquez has been virtually unhittable.

The 4 singles on non-hard hit balls makes it look quite a bit worse than it was.

The Reds hit 3 balls harder in the first than the Astros have all night.

I wouldn't give up on him, but allowing 9 runs in 8 innings, no matter the number of strikeouts is something to worry about. You can strike out 27 men but if the other teams scores that many runs, it doesn't matter.

He'd better. Because right now, he doesn't look like he's got ANY IDEA where the ball is going to go.

Yes, he's got the stuff to miss bats...but that same stuff has the ability to miss the CATCHER too. If Cueto, Leake, Wood, & Bailey all look solid...I'd have to consider demoting Volquez or sending him to the pen or something. Anything to get him to lose the walks.

For me, the walks are everything. If he can't get those under control...time to try someone who can.

Disagree. He has to be able to throw it where he's intending to throw it. You could have a mannequin up there. Once he gets his control back, THEN you can learn to adjust to hitters. But what's a hitter in the box going to do for you if you're throwing it into the ground 5-10 feet in front of the plate?

If that's the case, then that's on Price. He needs to have him throw prior to the game at full speed, full boar. You can't have him trying to figure it out in live game action.

It's great to see Volquez finally settle down. The problem is when you throw almost 50 pitches in the first inning ... even if you end up settling down ... you're not long for this world because of the pitch count. So, Volquez probably only has two more innings max left tonight. Not a quality start by any means, even if he pitches another two good innings.

I was kidding. And I think the point 44 is trying to make is that minor league hitters are much more likely to chase and when that happens its not going to help Volquez. He needs to face Major League hitters that will force him to throw good pitches.

I think it says a lot about what's between his ears that he can start so terribly both of his first starts but still end up giving his team some innings and keeping them in the game. There's probably a whole lot of guys out there that would've never made it out of the 1st inning after starting off like that.
