Hopefully those brooms will get worn out this season. :)

Not to nitpick(Hey! That's what we do best on RZ!) but I would really like to Janish play everyday. I know they need to get Renteria AB's but Janish is hitting the ball pretty good now and IMO should be in the lineup.

Funny you mention that because Fay asked Dusty this.

– Janish has been playing very well (.444 BA) but is getting a day off, as Reds prepare for road trip to Arizona and San Diego. Plus, manager Dusty Baker said Renteria hits Astros starter Brett Myers well.

Renteria has a .425 lifetime BA (17-for-40) vs. Myers, with 2 homers. Janish is 0-for-6 lifetime against Myers.

“We’ve still got to monitor (Janish) so he stays strong,” Baker said. “We’ve got a day game, and a long trip coming up.”

I'm fine w/ Renteria getting 2 starts a week. Obviously, I prefer the future gold-glover out there, but I understand getting everyone some work.

I get to listen to Marty today here at work, so I'm looking forward to the game. Go Reds!

Dusty has shut me up this year.
Most of his moves have made sense. This lineups also.
Playing matchups, while giving guys like Rolen a rest. Nice!

He's been aggressive in-game, and it has worked. I'm not sure I'd be stealing with guys like Phillips (who has lost a few steps), Janish (who is not fast ) and Gomes. But it's hard to argue with success.

The bullpen workload has been distributed nicely, also.

What can you say?

That said, Myers vs. LeCure is a tough matchup for us. Go REDS!
Keep it rolling!

While PJ has gained a tremendous amount of strength the last 2-3 years.....he still shows signs of wearing down and getting weaker with extended streaks of playing time. I'm good with seeing ER getting 1-2 starts a week....PJ can come in late for D if needed. We're spoiled with the depth this year.

Can't argue with that reasoning. Dusty reads his scouting reports and acts on them for the most part.

Yes, and in all honesty, Renturia is off to a good start too.
It's important to keep giving him playing time to keep him sharp.

IMO, after seeing Dusty manage Hernandez/Hannigan, I'm pretty convinced he's good at maximizing depth. Dusty tried to leverage different people in LF last year, but no one really stepped up to the opportunity so Gomes got the lion's share of playing time.. But now, we are seeing Heisey get another chance to grab playing time (and he's taking advantage of it so far).

The Operator

He's a low OB / free-swinger -- I don't think he'll have ever have the pitch recognition skills to hit .300 at the major league level. When you combine that with his low walk-rate, you've got an out-machine in your lineup that occasionally will tattoo one to the cheap seats.

Give the guy a chance. I mean, really, he's had 6 at bats this season. Today he faced a very tough pitcher.

Francisco will produce. Give him 75 or 85 at bats before bashing him.

Same could be said for the NL Central. Pirates & Reds were normally 5th & 6th with the Astros & Cards up at the top.

I must admit, it's refreshing to see the have-nots doing well this year. Reds, Pirates, Royals, Orioles, Blue Jays, Indians. While the perennial powerhouses are scuffling.

This is what I've been saying all along. Cracks me up to see somebody actually pick them to win the division (some clown on ESPN). Their starting pitching is supposed to be this well above average staff....I'm not buyin' it. Their offense, bullpen and defense are simply horrible. And that staff...middling at best. All in all, great news for the Pirates.

Totally winnable game against a bad team.

Sometimes its better to lose in 9, than win in 16.
