I'm just guessing on this, but here's my guess.

On Bruce's flyball DP, the run scored officially before the second out was made, so it's an RBI. On a ground ball DP, no one knows if the runs scores before the second out.

On Bruce's flyball DP, the run scored officially before the second out was made, so it's an RBI. On a ground ball DP, no one knows if the runs scores before the second out.
So if for example it was first and third with nobody out and a guy grounded one to second, and for whatever reason instead of just tossing it to second he got the guy in a run down, then through to first for the out, and while trying to get the second guy in a rundown the guy on third scored, and then they completed the double play would he get an RBI? If that makes sense at all.

Similar to what Phillips did against the Astros the other night but if the run on third had ended up scoring.

Would it almost being like defensive indifference when you steal a base? Because the defense lets you score a run, you didn't earn an RBI? Even though you steal second base they don't award you a stolen base.

Meanwhile, even though Bruce's sac fly was a DP, Votto was going to score anyway. The only reason they cutoff the ball is because he was going to be safe. So you "earned" your RBI.

There is no RBI on DP's when the outs are force outs.

The feeling is that grounding into a DP is such a bad result that no RBI should be awarded.

It would be foolish to deny Bruce a SF and RBI when the Rolen out had nothing to do with his hit. Rolen chose to try and take the extra base. He wasn't forced to.

Also on that play, I actuallly wondered if Rolen was intentionally giving himself up to draw the throw and make sure Votto scored. Anybody else wonder that?

Yes I kind of wondered the same thing because Young has a good arm and it may have been a close play if he threw home.

On Bruce's flyball DP, the run scored officially before the second out was made, so it's an RBI. On a ground ball DP, no one knows if the runs scores before the second out.

Getting to this a little late, but I think the difference must be that in a ground ball DP, the double play is the batters fault. In this situation, the second out was a runners fault and not the batters. If Rolen would not have run then it would not have been a double play at all, so no reason to hold that against Bruce.

I think Votto might have been out as well. That is one reason I wondered about the RBI. Rolen running is what guaranteed Votto scored. Bruce may not have had an RBI w/o Rolen running. But I think PP is correct in his interpretation.

I don't think he gave himself up per se, but it was obviuosly goingh to be a close play, and there is no reason why Rolen wouldn't expect the throw to gop through. Runners are taught to try and advance when the play at the plate will undoubtedly be made.

For some reason the Diamondbacks chose not to try for the play at the plate. I didn't notice that the throw was offline, but maybe they knew they had no chance?
