Otherwise, good lineup.

Disagree. Paul is very good at making contact. Little power, but fairly consistent contact. He'll get his fair share of singles and gappers. If it was that easy for the pitchers he'd be hitting .000 and not over .300.

It always amazes me that manager-types always think a player is going to play a certain way the next year. Right now, he's struggling, so the prudent thing would be to not put him in situations where he is sure to fail, i.e., close games. And yet because "he is ouir setup man", he gets put in those situations to fail. Let him figure it out and then put him in those close situations. Kind of like "he's our closer." Never understood that and never will. The result is always losses.

Very well said. Dusty is willing to fight through multiple losses now so that he has confidence and might be able to pitch effectively later in the season? I don't agree with that. Losses in April count the same as they do in any other month. He can't keep throwing away games like that.

I meant drop him in the pecking order. Why should he still be the 8th inning guy right now?

Last year, it took him 6 weeks to get straightened out. I like Masset and I'm sure he's gonna get things together. But I am not okay with him blowing lead after lead right now because Dusty is so dead set on him being the 8th inning man.

If RedsZone has taught me anything, it's that relief pitchers are volatile. The pre-defined role thing, I just don't get it. Very few relievers are lights out all season every season. The mortal types should be ridden while they're hot and not used in close situations when they're not.

If there was a guarantee that Masset = losses until May 1st, then maybe this would make sense. But is there some sort of guarantee that Masset can not and will not turn it on until next month?

This was a bit of an unlucky loss. We lost 1 run for sure, potentially more with the lovely "lets reward the pitcher because the ball bounces out of the park" ground rule double rule on Heisey's RBI triple, oh wait, it was only a double because even though the runners could have crawled to the next base.

Votto's double would have been out of the Grand Canyon, but not Petco Park, so another sure run was stranded.

The Masset deal is tiresome, it seems to be an obvious "dude, trust your stuff and quit nibbling" but I think that is just the approach he is going to use, so he will walk folks or get behind and then get lit up on hitter's counts.
