Any word on the status of this game? The radar looks brutal right now and they're calling for severe weather tonight.

Perhaps not the best night for a Volquez start. Being down 4-0 with a threat of a 5-inning weather-shortened game isn't something I look forward to.

MikeThierry
04-22-2011, 07:25 PM
Looking at the radar, it looks like the game might be delayed some but the line of thunderstorms is thin so I think they will get the game in tonight.

ESPN has switched it to Batista too.

Welsh and Brantley said this may be a move LaRussa made because he does not want to waste a starter on a game that may be delayed after an inning or 2.

MikeThierry
04-22-2011, 08:08 PM
This is actually a very smart move by TLR. Its not that McClellan is injured, he just doesn't want McClellan to start and then going in for a long delay. There is about a 100% chance this game is going to be delayed early so it makes absolute sense to start the long man in the bullpen.

Reds Fanatic

I would much rather have the long man in the Cards rotation, who didn't see much action this week to begin with, rather than having McClellan wait for 2 hours and go back out.

Eliminating Bautista doesn't hurt the bullpen much considering that the Cards have something like 13 pitchers on their 25 man roster.

I understand what you are saying but I just don't like having a starting pitcher throwing 50 warm up pitches, throwing 6 in the game, coming back two hours later and throwing 25-50 more warm up pitches. This is esp. true for a guy like McClellan who they are trying to ease into the starting role from being a bullpen guy a year ago.

Plus, as I said, Bautista didn't see much work this week and this sort of stuff is the reason why the Cards got him in the first place.

I think TLR has been planning this move ever since he heard the weather report. That's probably why he didn't name a starter for Sunday. He's been planning this move since the offseason. That's how far ahead he is of everyone else. He knew it would rain today and set his rotation for it about January. Then, he listed McClellan, snookering Dusty into having his hitters go over McClellan scouting reports. Then, he had someone stand in front of Batista as he warmed up so no one would know until he took the mound at game time.

MLB stat question of the night. Why is it when a pitcher has gone 6.2 innings it's designated as 6 point 2 when in actuality it's 6 2/3 (or 6.67). Just one of those things that annoys me with stats. It's right up there with a pitcher getting an UN-earned run when it was HIS error that triggered it.

Maybe top-notch banana phone topics. :O)

It's a base-three counting system. Because if it's an earned run against the pitcher, it would be an earned run for the offense, and the offense didn't earn it.

Again, I might agree with you if the Cards bullpen was short or was on very little rest. Using Bautista isn't going to win or lose the game for the Cardinals.

It's not "just 6 pitches". You've got to count in all the warmup tosses BEFORE and AFTER the rain delay. Not to mention the fact that you warm up, get loose and then sit...tighten up and have to do it all over again. That's how guys get hurt. It's not about the amount of work.

Volquez did all of that and I guarantee you he'll be on the mound after the delay. It was just 6 pitches.

I wouldn't be so sure about that. And another part of it is how hard you pushed in your warmup tosses. Were you throwing 50% or 90%?

Pulling your starter before he ever throws a pitch is one of the dumbest moves in managerial history. It goes right up there with pitching for Josh Hamilton with Juan Castro.
