I'd just like to see a starter keep us in the game long enough to give the offense a chance to peck away at a few runs. That was the recipe last year. So far this year, the starters have made visions of Jimmy Haynes and Jimmy Anderson dance in my head and put too much pressure on the offense to score 6-10 runs to win a game.

So I'm currently watching "The 20 Greatest Games" on MLB Network and the 03 NLCS Game 6 is on. The downfall of Mark Prior. The superb management choices of Dusty Baker. The infamous Bartman. Ah, good times.

No...not really. But when you struggle like he has, you'd think he'd get mad. It just doesn't look like it phases him. It's not a big deal, but I'd hope he's at least INTO the game. Just hard to tell with the way he is.

Wood will be gone when Bailey and or Cueto are back.

Volquez has given up 1 run?

I agree in regards to Wood. As for Volquez...batters can't hit him. I'm not going to argue that AT ALL. His stuff is great. But he can't locate it. He is incapable of going even remotely deep in a game until he can. I like to see close to a 2-1 ratio in strikes to balls from my starters. He's almost always on the opposite side of 50/50. Tonight, thus far...20 strikes, 24 balls. 1 hit. But 4 walks. Those count as baserunners too. But it's the pitch count and flirting with danger that's the problem. Not to mention the additional strain on the bullpen.

That was a nice play for him, but that's the very end of his range toward third. IMO Janish has quicker feet and would have had that standing up. Still a very nice play especially if you consider the bat that guy carries.

Homer was pulled after 91 pitches in Louisville. Another good outing: 6.1 IP, 5 hits, 1 ER, 2 BBs, 6 Ks. Not sure how good the Norfolk offense is, but he looked very relaxed and was throwing first pitch strikes...I have no idea how his velocity is since neither Gameday or MiLB.TV have pitch FX, but he appears to be at his normal velocity. I think pulling him after 91 is treating him with kid gloves, but really I'm hoping to have these guys (Bailey & Cueto) at their best in the SECOND half of the season so I won't complain.

FWIW Welsh always acted as if Dunn wasn't all that bad out there either.Chris was a pitcher so maybe he sees Gomes lunging at ball to catch them at the last second and just automatically thinks they're great catches.Dunn usually couldn't even do that.I'm not sure what Thoms excuse is.

Johnson soft tapper back to Ondrusek. Man on 2nd, 2 out. Phillips clownin' out at second with Bonifacio. Bray in, high socks and all.

Side note: Some clown I work with overheard myself and a colleague of mine discussing our pitching situation, namely bullpen. Out of nowhere, this guy goes, "they need to send Masset back down to AAA, he's a clown." After a period of perplexed looks and inappropriate disguised gestures, we follow up and ask who he likes...

"I like Bray, his socks are cool..."

Runner going on the pitch. GO to BP, who gets the batter at 1B. 1 down with a runner in scoring position.

He's been pretty much a shutdown pitcher so far this year.

Not really....his peripherals suggest otherwise. He more and more relies upon others and sequence. That's not shutdown.

Even the .202 hitting version of Hanley?

I agree. Let's hope he can stay sharp though with his limited save opportunities so far this year. His opportunities should average out, but you would hate to see him hit a funk when they do.

I'm not pitching to Hanley.

Why not? Look at his numbers so far this season. Pretty dismal. He's been struggling.

Slightly closer to shutdown than meltdown this year.
