Forgive me, but just take an objective look at the Reds' lineup today. If you think that's a division winning lineup, I disagree.

The pitching is terrible. The starters' ERA is next to last in the league.

But the lineup needs work too.

A good lineup scores 8 against this pitcher today.

The Reds were 15-15 on May 8th last year. They went 18-11 in May with starting pitching leading the way. The offense is still at the top of the league in most categories. This is the same team but without the same performance from starting pitchers thus far. If Cueto and Bailey can help stabilize the rotation the offense will provide enough runs to win games.

I'm not sure I call it bad baseball. It's not like they are throwing the ball around the diamond. They are just getting poor starting pitching and not getting timely hitting...

Every team goes through a stretch where no one is hitting. It happened to the Phillies last year. They had some ridiculous streak of innings where they didn't get a single run. I wouldn't call the Phillies a bad offensive team, they just went through a funk. 162 games, folks, 162 games...

Yes, this is a very peculiar strategy, especially given the circumstances.

Not at all. The Astros starter, Aneury (Cy) Rodriguez hadn't started previously this year. So he only pitched five innings.

So the Stros had to use their pen to get through this game.

Tomorrow they have a good starter going, so the Stros figure they won't need too much bullpen.

Stros are going for the jugular against an opponent playing poorly.

There is just about no stat that can be produced (other than W/L) that will describe the Reds as a .500 or worse team, unless specific things are being isolated.

The team ERA is .9 runs worse than the team xFIP.

The Reds are close to the lead in the NL in runs scored.

I am as frustrated as anybody in the world about this team right now, especially living in Illinois and surrounded by Cubs and Cardinals fans. But I am optimistic that a breakout will happen in the near future.

My defense is "while the results are disappointing, a number of stats support the idea that this is not a team that is going to be losing at this rate or in this fashion for the brunt of a 162 game season."

Right now, it feels like every ball in play by the opponents is falling for a hit, every fly ball leaves the yard, and every pitcher the Reds see is a world beater. Conversely, from the Reds' perspective, it feels like every fly ball is hit to the wall, every line drive is right at someone, and every pitcher the Reds have who had success last year is suddenly awful.

As I said before, I am extremely frustrated. I wake up in the morning, check to see what the pitching matchup is, and seem to lose my optimism after the first two innings on most nights. However, I don't think this is a team that will continue that trend long-term, and the stats support my feelings.

Well, the offense scored 3...but to be honest, that was some pretty pitiful offense today. That Rodriguez kid was throwing nothing but fastballs and we couldn't do anything against him. And they didn't even have substantial movement or velocity on them. Kinda sad. If not for Brandon Lyon, we'd be looking at a no-hitter. (no way that "triple" should've been a hit...horrible play by Underpants) But hey, I'll take the win.

But I don't know how anybody can say that the offense is not a concern. Against these pitchers...we should've put up double digit hits AND runs.

Now in regards to the pitching...Wood looked fantastic. Excellent movement, simply pounding the zone. He was really working quickly too (Leake-quick). The bullpen came in and did the same. Fast, aggressive and efficient. The one hit Cordero allowed was on a pretty darned good pitch. Just gotta give credit to the hitter there. Overall, a much needed solid pitching performance. Over the past 5 or so games, our starters are sporting a 10+ earnie. *shudders*

I can't wait for Homer's debut tomorrow. :D

BTW, today's game by Wood was extremely predictable. Go back and look at his outings this year.

Good 7 ip 1 run
Bad 5 ip 6 runs
Good 6 ip 1 run
Bad 3 ip 6 runs
Good 6 ip 3 runs (sorta good)

There's a reason for that. Reds wins have been blowouts...very few opportunities for Coco. He's 4 for 4 btw. Sox have been horrible. Very few winning opportunities. Okay, I'm exaggerating on the runs. But I've seen this Astros staff pretty much day in and day out. They are THAT bad. Once I saw that we held them to 2 runs...the win was in the bag as soon as I saw the bullpen being called on. Especially Lyon. Melancon has been pretty solid and Fulchino's been fairly decent, but the rest of the pen is quite capable of putting up historically bad numbers this season. The starters...Figeroa, Happ, Wandy have all been batting tees. Myers has been decent but I don't see it continuing. Norris has been extremely lucky but has gotten good results.

IMO this is the worst pitching staff in the bigs by quite a large margin. To be shut out by them for 8 innings, in a hitters ballpark, and to a rookie who throws basically nothing but straight fastballs (90-92...so not really a flamethrower)...thats something that concerns me. Yes we won, but we looked horrible at the plate all day long (until Brandon Lyon stepped in to prove his worth).

The one aspect of the Astros that people have overlooked is their offense. Some of these young hitters are stepping up and clicking. But it'll take Phillies-type numbers to offset their staff.

BINGO!

This team has played inconsistent ball the first month of the season, and had to do so with injuries to key players. We get Cueto and Bailey back. That is going to help, and I feel this staff will improve. In fact, I think this team will pay better as the season progresses. We're pretty much (record-wise) where we were at this time last season.

But IMO, no one is gonna walk away with this division. And it is gonna be one of the weaker divisions in baseball.
