I'm still in pain so they should be good for 2 out of three this weekend. What a weird experience. Here are the biggest reasons for my post surgery pain:

1) Breathing tube
2) Sleeping in an awful bed
3) Appendix being removed

I cannot believe how much it hurts my throat, lungs and ribs when I cough.

But to act as if he is a mess is a bit of a stretch. He had to get 4 outs that inning. So no, you don't want to see him walk the next guy after the error, but it is ok to turn your head sometimes when a pitcher gets a little wild/pitch count ineffective considering the circumstances. (Provided of course he doesn't allow any runs, which he did not). Runs were averted, extra pitches were thrown, life goes on.

He gave up one hit, then got a DP ball that they managed to get no outs on. Then a ground out to second. Then a ground out to third. Then a passed ball to allow to run a score. And then a ground out to SS.

What exactly did he do that inning that didn't help himself? He threw a bad 0-2 and gave up a single. The rest was entirely the doing of his defense.

I've only gotten to see the game since the Bruce dinger (great time to turn it on), but what I've seen of Volquez...he's wild as heck. All over the place. Yes, he does get swings and misses and does throw some strikes...but I watch the glove. And he almost NEVER throws it where Hernandez is setting up for it. Ramon's earning his money today. He's crossed up nearly every pitch it seems.

Yes and no, that gets into the terrible idea behind earned runs where you imagine how it would have been had an error not occurred.

The error did occur, so did the great play, neither were due to Volquez. On the pitches he threw, he has been wild.

But he's always going to be a little more wild than the average starter. The question is if he can be effective despite his wildness. In my mind that's the final line score, and that says he's pitched pretty well.

Janish made an error with two outs. Volquez ended up throwing somewhere between 10-15 more pitches that inning. Who knows how many the botched DP cost him.

It doesn't really work that way. You never know what would happen if janish makes that play or if ER doesn't botch the throw.

Theoretically the errors hurt his pitch count but errors are part of the game. If his control is that sensitive to errors, then there are issues.

If Janish makes that play the inning is over. He doesn't have to throw another pitch in the inning.

You know exactly how it would have worked.

Over the course of the season, the defense will help him a lot more than it hurts him. But today, people are ripping on him for his pitch count being so high, when A LOT of it has to do with his defense.

I think there's a limit though. We'll call it the Reitsma theorem;at some point after an error, the responsibility falls back on the pitcher to go ahead and get the next guy out.

The fact that it took 15 pitches to do so after an error falls partially on Volquez.
