A group of friends and I try to get together somewhat regularly (3-4 times a year) to play board games. Some of our favorites include:

Settlers of Cataan - http://www.catan.com/

Ticket to Ride - http://www.daysofwonder.com/tickettoride/en/

Citadels - http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/478/citadels

Carcassonne - http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/822/carcassonne

Anyone else like to play these types of games? I was also curious if anyone in the Central Ohio area had ever been to CABS. http://www.buckeyeboardgamers.org/

None of those are my current cup of tea, but, for an English teacher (or anyone with a literary bent), Bananagrams is fun. So, too, is Scrabble (naturally). Another good one is Lieography, wheree the players have to come up with the first lines from different novels (or at least lines that sound like the first lines of novels).

Any trivia game is fun, too, IMO.

I enjoy Pandemic and Puerto Rico. I get together with friends about once a month and play games like this, it's a good time. I think a lot of people think board games = Monopoly and the like, but there's a lot out there that goes a little deeper.

My faves right now are game I can play with my kids:

Stratego- original. The new one is full of dragons and lairs and fantasy stuff. Just give me cannons, cavalry and funny hats.

Axis and Allies, I never get tired of that classic!

Dune is fun as well, especially if you have 6 players.

If you like the movie Red Dawn play Fortress America.

Puerto Rico and Axis and Allies are two games that I know my friend has in his pretty extensive collection. I've yet to play either so maybe we'll have to give them a shot next time.

We used to always play Trivial Pursuit, but haven't played it in a while. I love trivia, but the games that require a lot of strategy have become my favorites in the last couple of years.

I'm sure i would love all of these games. Unfortunately with a new baby and almost no friends in my new town, I have little ability to play them. :(

I'm a big fan of those games. I used to play Settlers all the time and I actually just bought Carcassonne a week ago. It is frustrating though because it's hard to find other people willing to play these types of games. Most people think they're too complicated or that the games take too long. :(

Battle Cry. http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/551/battle-cry I love civil war stuff, and battle cry is an AWESOME strategy game. It's awesome.

I'm truly awful at Carcassonne thus far. But it is still a lot of fun. With all of these games I go through a cycle where at first ignorance is bliss and I do halfway decent, then I pick up just enough strategy to royally screw myself up.

My wife has a very short attention span, yet she'll even play these types of games if she is around when we play. It's a shame people won't give them a try.

I love Carcassone and Settlers. If any of you own an XBOX 360 and like these board games but can't find anyone to play, there are good XBOX Live arcade versions available. I've been able to play with the friend who introduced me to them even though he has been living in Eastern Europe.

We've been playing "Apples to Apples".
Not really a "board" game, since it's played with cards.
It's better after a few beers.

I don't think I've ever played this sober.

Bang! - a spaghetti western game played with cards. It comes in a giant bullet. http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgameexpansion/30933/bang-the-bullet

Last Night on Earth - fight hoards of zombies as a stereotypical zombie movie character, or maul stereotypical movie characters as a hoard of zombies http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/29368/last-night-on-earth-the-zombie-game

Battlestar Galactica - a really complex game based on one of the best sci-fi shows ever http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/37111/battlestar-galactica

I also dig Settlers and Carcassonne.

I've played Settlers of Catan a few times. Always happens to be when my wife and I get together with my best friend and his wife. By the time we start playing, me and him have had way too much to drink. My inability to grasp the game while inebriated always makes for an interesting night

My wife's family likes to play Apples to Apples. And they do it without drinking.

Worst game ever.

I played Puerto Rico for the first time the other night. Very interesting game. Seems to be many different strategies you could use to win in a given game.

We used to have Thursday night Risk games with the same 5 or 6 guys every week just after college, fun times.

I love Risk. Even downloaded the app on my ipad.

Stratego used to be a favorite when I was younger. Such a fun game to play.

The only thing that annoyed me about Risk is that there seemed to always be secret alliances forming between two different players. I guess that is the reality of world domination :)

You guys bothered to keep the alliances secret? Ours were always right out in the open.

Where do you even buy all these weird games everybody has posted about?

You're pretty much limited to online sites such as Funagain and Boards & Bits unless you live in a city big enough to have a game store. Even then, the best prices are online.

My current favorites are 7 Wonders and a game called "Glory To Rome". There are also a number of good games available for IPad and IPhone; if you have one of those devices that would be a cheaper way to find out if you like this sort of thing.

http://www.boardgamegeek.com/

Search for a game, and there is usually a "Shop" link next to each item in the list of results.

Or you can just use Google to get the best prices.

I always liked the board game TROUBLE as a kid.

Being the old foggy that I am, raised in the 60's, that was more up my alley. Back then you didn't have video games, TV wasn't 24/7 and you were lucky to get 6 channels between VHF/UHF. So we played a lot of the classic board games..... Monopoly, Life, Clue, Sorry, Parchessi, Bingo, Yahtzee, Chinese Checkers. If it was made by Parker Bros, MB, Hasbro, Marx, or Ideal, we had it.

I remember these two....

My brother and I use to play the heck out of this, and I found it again a few years ago.

Got to play 7 Wonders for the first time yesterday. I can see why several people on here listed it as a favorite. Very fun game that we'll have to include into our rotation.

We also played Power Grid. The box looked like it would be a cheapish game but I thought it was a lot of fun. It reminded me of Ticket to Ride but with more strategy/less luck.

I love Apples to Apples but I almost always play it with a large group so some of the answers end up being beyond ridiculous.

My favorite board games right now are Scattergories (that counts, right?!) and Cranium. I enjoy the Trivial Pursuit types of games but I usually suck at them which bums me out when I lose badly to everyone else. I'm undefeated in the Pop Culture DVD version though! :p
