Well if they lose, no more birthdays for you (though events on saturday may take of that for all of us, so I hear). A lot of pressure :)

Happy B-day by the way.

Charlie Morton on the bump for the Pirates today. Say what you will about the guy, but THIS YEAR, he's pitching VERY well.

4-1, 3.13 era

And lets not forget the last time he faced us. Complete game 5 hits, 1 run. Please, let's NOT take the Pirates lightly. I know their history too...but THIS version of the Buccos are competitive. We play solidly though and we should take care of business. Get it done boys!

This version of them is better, but they are not competitive. Still probably going to lose 90 games, and have lost 6 in a row.

Lost 6 in a row right after they won 6 out of 8. I'm not trying to make excuses or anything...just saying don't overlook them...it'll come back and bite us.

It seems like anytime the Pirates meet the Brewers they get swept. I wasn't surprised that they went on a losing streak. Brew crew have really got their number for some reason.

You have the NL MVP on your team, and you bat the worst hitter in your lineup right in front of him. Well played Dusty! And we've seen this mistake made consistently lately. Just because the Cubs gave us a couple of games doesn't mean it was a good lineup.

(This message brought to you by the campaign to remove Paul Janish from the two-hole.)

_Sir_Charles_

You have the NL MVP on your team, and you bat the worst hitter in your lineup right in front of him. Well played Dusty!

(This message brought to you by the campaign to remove Paul Janish from the two-hole.)

“You want more production out of every spot,” Baker said. “Until we move Scott back to the fourth slot and Brandon up to two, it’s going to be a situation where we’re hitting-and-running with that spot and bunting with that spot. That’s a spot — especially when your leadoff man’s getting on — that you can carry.
“What you hate to do is put that person at the bottom of the order. Then you don’t get much production or turnover at the bottom in order to get to the top. You try to space your lineup with guys who are productive, with guys who are on the way to being productive, so that a pitcher doesn’t have an easy way at seven, eight, nine.”
Baker planned to make the move with Rolen few days ago. But the Reds had won five straight and scored 6, 7, 9, 7 and 7 in the five games.
“I talked to (Rolen) and he said things are fine the way they are. Leave it that way,” Baker said. “You do that sometimes, too. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.”

Not saying I agree with it...but it's hard to argue with the "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" argument. For now.

Blitz Dorsey
05-18-2011, 07:56 PM
What faulty logic out of Dusty. You bat someone in the two-hole because of their ability to bunt? Uh, might want to try having someone with a decent on-base percentage bat in front of the freakin' league MVP. It would be nice to have a man on base when Votto is up.

Not killing the messenger, Sir Charles. I actually appreciate you posting that.

It's amazing to me that he doesn't get more of a look. Solid defense that you don't get with the other options and every bit the offensive option IMO. Lol. Okay, ignore the name for a second. We lost to a guy who's now 5-1 with a 2.62 era. Sometimes you've just got to give the other guy some credit. It's not like we've got a poor offense.

Yep, except for LF and SS. Offensive production from those 2 spots is putrid. But, Morton is definitely on a roll this year.

1 ER in 18 innings contributes to those un-Charlie Morton like numbers.

Happy Birthday, Cedric.

Thanks! At least I got to watch Cy Morton tonight.

1/3 of Morton's IP this year have been vs. the Reds.

So, yeah, he's been on a roll alright. A roll vs. the Reds.

I want no more of Cy Morton.

Seriously though. He and the Pirates make me sleepy. Maybe that's the problem with the Reds too - drowsiness.

Nice guy, but please no more Jonny Gomes. Please, Dusty. End the madness. Please don't tell me your thinking about playing him everyday in Cleveland.

Logic says Lewis (or Rolen, to save his back) should DH and Heisey should play LF. But when it comes to Jonny Gomes, logic simply doesn't apply.

Charlie Morton now has 3 complete games in his career.

2 of those have come in the last 5 weeks against the powerhouse Reds.

Yes, that makes sense.

It is these types of results that really bother me, if this team is ever going to beat anyone outside of the central in the post season, or even win the division.

Gotta show up against another team's ace and make him work, not get shut out or no-hit every time, and of course your most reliable SP has to pitch better against the Pirates of all teams.

Of course it would help if the OF didn't consist of at least 2 poor bats including an automatic out in Gomes.

Feel for BP/Rolen/Votto when they are expected to do everything offensively so often.

Wouldn't be so down about it if they eeked out at least 2-3 runs over 9 innings.

Time to get Janish out of the 2 hole and Gomes out of the city.

Sometimes you just get beat, those other guys are getting paid too.

Reds need to gain a split in this series before heading into a very tough 10 game road trip.

The thing about Morton pitching this game was that he was supposed to pitch yesterday against the Nats in DC. The game was rained out but it didn't rain. I work in DC and at the time the game was to start at 1 pm it was sunny and clear and stayed that way most of the afternoon. It did rain in the early morning hours and was predicted throughout the day but as weather forecast goes they aren't right most of the time. There was no reason not to play that game. I suspect the Nats had very poor ticket sales for the game and didn't want to get embarrassed with 3 or 4,000 fans scattered around in the ballpark. Just really bad luck on that part for the Reds.
Give Morton credit. He has the Reds number and he's turned himself into a pretty good pitcher. Just one of those games you forget about and move on to the next one.

Good analysis. Add to this the poor lineup construction as stated by REDS44 (Janish 2nd) and you have the recipe for this shutout.

I'm a great worrier, and I worry about complacency on Dusty's behalf.
It's as if: "we have a great team and you can throw anything out there and win".

"I can bat the CF first and the SS second, as I like to do and it doesn't matter. "
"I can play for one run and take the bat out of my best hitter's hand repeatedly and it doesn't matter".

You can "overmanage", but you can "undermanage" too. Yeah, its one loss, but the Tuesday game was loss too (Cubs gave us that one) and the Monday game was almost a loss, too.

The team has played three bad games in a row. They're lucky to only have one loss.
