The general rule is that if it looks close, send him. Throwing a guy out at the plate requires a lot of things to go right.

If you don't think your bullpen can hold a two run lead over two innings then you might as well pack it in for the season.

True, but I'd still rather have my starter who is cruising in there over pitchers who aren't good enough to be starters in the first place. If he was getting hit or at 110 pitches it would be different.

Fer sure. Trouble is, none of that 8th inning was unnecessary. If Bray throws strikes after Masset's performance, all is well. Ah, but that's baseball.

Even if he gets Either out, Ondrusek comes in to get Kemp. It would only be 7-6, but Bray walking Either was not the worse thing that happened that inning by a long shot.

Sure. What I tried to say was that Bray failed at his job which was to get one out and couldn't even throw strikes. And the run he allowed to reach tied the game. That's all.

I wouldn't call Masset a head case, but I do think these guys are conditioned to being in close games and wonder if the 5 run lead helped him to come out flat. Once the Reds got those runs, I'd have gotten Fisher up.

Not sure why he'd go back to Masset anyway, having just used him last night. I guess he was up prior to the Reds getting the runs. Dusty does have a habit of going back to the same guys. But if he doesn't trust them all, then we need different guys.

The Reds still have Cordero, Fisher, and Horst. And if the reports that Volquez is returning to the rotation next week are true, then Reineke is also likely available.

That is probably what happened ....and what was said about having a let down unless the game is close...is plausible. Still....these guys are there to do the job and I do not think Nick has been overworked of late. Just gets tiring to watch this team look like it is going to roll...finally hit a very good pitcher soundly and then the bullpen wheel falls off?
