Mike Leake could hit 5th in tonights lineup and it would probably only cost the Reds a half-point or so of win probability. (I think I'm joking)

"Lack of protection" has got to be the most overrated phrase thrown around here these days.

Bruce has the same protection he's had all season.

For all the hits allowed, Leake's not excessively high on the pitch count. 72 through 5. And the stat I look for...2-1 strikes to balls. 47 strikes, 25 balls. I'll take that every time out.

Imo, part of that is on Dusty. If it's become obvious that he starts to struggle later in games, then he needs to be on a shorter leash later in the game. But Dusty tends to leave him in to see if he can work out of it. It's great for Leake's development...but not for the Reds quite often.

Castro pops out to Stubbs in shallow center. Leake at 99 pitches (65 strikes / 34 balls).

7 ip / 9 hits / 2 runs / 1 bb / 1 k.

I'll take that. Nice job Mike.

Might be draft-related.

Cairo pops out to shallow center. 1 down.
Hanigan walks to load the bases. Hanny is 2 for 2 with 2 walks tonight. Nice.
Janish lines one off Ramirez's glove, everybody safe. 8-2 Reds.
Leake grounds into a 5-2-3 dp to end the inning.

I'm going to go to one post per inning. This lag is painful...MLB draft maybe?
Robert Stevenson 18 year old pitcher was our pick.

K #3 for Leake. 1 down.
Ramirez pops out to Bruce. 2 down.
DeWitt singles. 3 for 4 tonight. Leake at 109 pitches.
Soto grounds out to Cairo. Nice play on both ends!

Okay, now PULL HIM Dusty! 114 pitches. 74 strikes / 40 balls. Great outing. Let him leave on a high note!

Dusty needs to pull him. Period. He's at 114 pitches and you want him to leave on a high note. Leaving him in is just stupid. He'll have plenty of opportunities for a CG.

Agree. Leake should have been out after 7. No point in this whatever. If the bullpen's that bad, we should just throw in the towel.

Pulling him in the 7th was borderline. He was throwing well and still below his season high in pitches. The 8th stretched him out a bit...going into the 9th is just stupid and dangerous IMO. His previous high this season was 103 IIRC.

Why are these people all bent out of shape over 1 extra inning .... like he is going to break if he throws more than 100-110 pitches? He saved the bullpen big time. No one in there needed work.

I have serious concerns that Mike Leake is ever going to be able to get major league hitters out on a consistent basis.

Does that count?

When you are ailing the tonic you take? The Cubs. The Cubs are just terrible. It looks like some of them have already packed it in for the season. The Astros may not end up in the basement afterall.
Nice game from Leake. Just what the Reds needed. Leake doesn't wow you at all. But he generally gets the job done.
If Volquez can get through the first inning without any runs that will be a major accomplishment tonight. The Reds need him to throw consistent strikes if they are to stay in contention this season. Lets hope for the best.
I think that was the last game for a while for Sean Casey in the booth. He's toned it down quite a bit from his first telecast. But he can get very annoying with all his laughing at everything anyone says and at his own comments too.

Just a little add on to last night's game thread. Jeff & Jim talked about a boy named Wyatt who had been a huge Reds fan who passed away this week, who had come down to the ballpark & met many of the players. His obit was in this morning's paper and they wrote:

(He) was a boy who ate, breathed, and slept baseball every minute of his life. He one day dreamed of playing for his favorite team, the Cincinnati Reds but now is playing in a bigger league with all the greats thanks to his coaches who made it possible...We will see you later buddy.

Felt it was well worth mentioning, to give a little honor & memory to a big fan.

I would say this was the little boy they featured on a Reds Live program last season. I don't remember his name but he was was part of The Make a Wish Program for kids who have a terminal illness. It was an excellent feature last season. IIRC, Jay Bruce was his favorite player and Bruce was taking him around to meet everyone.
