It would be easier to be happy with a pretty good or solid offense if the pitching was better. As this team is it needs to score as many runs as possible and when the upgrades are as simple as calling up Cozart, Mes, and Alonso its frustrating.

I don't get the hand-wringing. They scored two runs yesterday and everyone wants to panic...

The hand-wringing comes from the fact that this offense may be so-called great and all, but there about 1 million asterisks attached to that phrase. The Reds have scored 3 runs or less in half of their games the past month - leading to most of the losses. This team has serious offensive problems whether anyone wants to acknowledge them or not: Stubbs can't make contact, Phillips and Bruce when hot are great but when not hot are brutal, there is zero production coming out of LF and SS, rolen isn't doing what he did last year. It's entirely too easy for mediocre pitchers to shut these guys completely down. See: last night.

Not when you consider the lousy defense tonight. I think V would have allowed fewer runs if the team defended better tonight. Just considering his pitching in isolation, I think he did ok.

And as long as he's throwing balls down the right field line, balking, and not paying attention to base runners it really doesn't matter what his strikeout to walk ratio is.

It matters though...a lot. I haven't done any research, but I'm pretty sure balks per nine innings isn't a great indicator of future performance. I could be wrong though.

I really despise inter league play. I really do.

Red Sox fans are probably saying it's not fair that NY and TB get three freebies against the Reds.

As long as he keeps acting the way he's acted this season on the mound, he wont win many games regardless of his strikeout to walk ratio.

Perhaps this listless play will remind WJ once again that this team is not good enough in several areas to sustain consistent success.

To come off a successful west coast trip like that and return home only to be this flat is head scratching for some I guess.

You know how some players, just rub you the wrong way. Molina is one of those for me...I even hate his stupid batting stance where he almost faces the pitcher with his front foot on the outside line of the box. He runs like a water buffalo... The only good thing I can say about him is at least he doesn't have neck tattoos.

and another thing, why is he always writing in the dirt when he's behind the plate? Is he keeping his own score back there? It looks dumb.

Reds' LF wOBA by month
March/April: .342
May: .292
June: .335

Not bad at all in April and June, but May was horrid; overall is .319, which is tied for 12th in MLB.

SS is a different story. .249 wOBA on the year, good for 28th in baseball. Awful. Something has to be done about SS.

Who is making the straw man statement now?I'm not sure you understand what a "straw man" argument is. The post stated that "we would lose absolutely nothing on offense or defense." Well, unless you are talking about an injury situation or some other circumstance beyond your control, that is nothing more than personnel shuffling, aka shifting deck chairs. Here, we are talking about the need for improvement, not just someone who can provide the same production. I'd be interested to read your reasoning for how my statement was a straw man argument.

BTW, a "straw man" is self-constructing a weak argument that does not fairly represent a stated position, then providing counterpoints that show how that argument is not true. And it is different than a "red herring," which is to make a statement that diverts attention from the real issue, like "I don't understand why people are against moves that result in wins" in a discussion on the adequacy of the offense as is.
